Try to get any album by a band called Opeth, if you can handle
some death metal growls and if you like *LOTS* of (long) acoustic passages
in your music. They also got some of the best production in the genre. The
albums have a crystal clear production that you won't find anywhere.
    Incredible.

I guess that they are what we could call "progressive death metal"
or any other label involving the word "progressive" and some kind of
extreme metal. Oh, almost all their songs are very long.

My favorite band, tied with Dream Theater, I think.

            []s, Roger...

P.S.: Any recommendations on thrash metal, anyone? It's been quite a while
since I last heard any thrash metal...

you probably already have dozens if not hundreds of them. Jewel cases are those normal cases that most CDs come in, hinges on the left. if you drop it it breaks and the cover just neatly comes completely off from then on, you know the thing. the inside used to be dark gray but lately they're all clear. That's a jewel case. Moo.

Yup! Jon Finn is one of the best "unknown" guitar players out there. He's a teacher @ Berklee College of Music, and he actually tought JP. He' just AMAZING!!! His music is very prog/metal like... You'll love it, believe me.

Speaking of which. Does anybody out there has anything by him? I haven't been able to find his material :( If so, mail me privately.

I won't directly know about the Hampton Beach show (hopefully Nick will "inform" me :), but Jon Finn's chops should impress you sufficiently. He's a great guy up on stage, funny, and talks to the audience like he is just hanging out in your living room. For me, it's difficult to decide whether to watch Jon shred or Dave make a little drum kit completely submit.

Just in case you all missed me, I was on vacation, computer crashed, and here I am. I got the copy of the fan club 2 cd and laughed my ass off at quite a few things and remembered my own recording studio experiences as well. The part with Derek trying to record the ending of Anna Lee is so funny, I can't stand it. On the previous track, where Derek is playing on the piano, did you know that Derek is playing something from Rick Wakeman's henry the Eighth album. I don't have the album, but the part he is playing is part of Wakeman's solo on the YesSongs album. He also does Goodbye Yellow Brick road and a piece of Benny and the jets. Geez, does Anna Lee sound like an old EJ tuneor what? :) Anyway, I hope to be atht eh dp/elp/dt concert, but I have no money, so i doubt it unless friends of mine come through. and there is a jammer who I forgot the name of that is sending me a ton of CD-r and tapes of DT rarities and I want to publicly thank him, he knows who he is, for being the man. And if I owe anybody anything myself, I am sorry that I have been a slackass, but let's see youtry rebuilding your win95 system without sight. At least the thing runs faster now. I think I needed the cleanup anyway.

We seem to be divided on whether Shirley is good or an agent of evil. Personally, I walk the line. His mixing is okay ... though I think the guitar was mixed too high and the bass far too low on LTE, it sounds ok, and FII sounds okay. His producing, however, in my opinion is still evil, and I'll never want him doing anything more than mixing. Stick to his strength.

Now Awake, save for a little more bass guitar in the mix, I think was the best produced and mixed of DT's albums.

I kinda believe with what Mr. Mike Portnoy said about DT and King's X.

Here in my country, Indonesia, it is a lot easier to find DT stuffs than = KX stuff. I can find I&W, Awake, ACOS, FII, LiTM & boots (Mind Control, imported sure=85.), not so hard, just have to wait a 'way bit' longer. Bu= t the only KX stuff I can find here is their best album. So I believe DT is mor= e popular than KX.

Actually, DT stuff is even easier to find here than Rush stuff. Rush stuf= f that I can find here right now is just Counterpart, T4E, and=85=85=85.Wor= king Man Tribute ;-) Don't ask me bout spice girls/hanson stuff=85.

Can you believe that? DT here in Indonesia? A country that most of the people are still thinkin' what to eat tomorrow=85=85..

I hope the band will release the live album and the video also here. I desperately need to see DT performance, I never see them live, not even a video clip=85..I also hope the live album released on cassette, 'cause CD= is way too expensive right now (though it is still the cheapest CD in the world, I think=85.). Not even dare thinkin' bout imported things. Economy sucks, US$ is 5 times stronger than last year compared to our currency=85=85=85But, hey, this is a country with 200 millions people, if= 1% of this people buy DT stuff, I think it=92s a pretty good business, still, I= MHO=85.

Hello, Well, it's been a while since DT released their latest, and I find myself listening to now it more now than ever. It has taken over first place on my list of DT albums, not so much because it is a better album, but because I think the songs are better. If that makes no sense, let me elaborate: though there are bad songs on FiI, the other songs are of such high quality that they overshadow the bad ones. So here's my thoughts on the album now that I've had it for some time. Hey, keep away from that page down key!!! NM: I didn't like this as an opener initially, but now its my favorite song on the album, no joke. It has a feel and complexity that are unparalleled in DTs recent catalog, but doesn't just wank away on solos. Its all about songwriting. YNM: Hated it from the first listen and after hearing You or Me, I hate the LP version even more. This is a substandard song by any band, and downright bad by DT standards. The lyrics BLOW, and the music sounds derivative at best. PS: Instant ball-grabber and its still holding on to them. Featuring some incredible vocals by James and one of Petrucci's most tasteful and understated solos. Plus, when the balls and chunk kick in, I can help from headbanging. I feel like I'm sixteen again. HY: Didn't like it initially, but its grown on me a great deal. Most noticeable is the contrast between the lyrics and the uplifting harmonies of the chorus. An incredibly depressing song is subverted to get you to sing along before noticing what you're even doing. Plus I love Derek's keys over the outro. BMS: At the beginning, this was my favorite track, but its worn out its welcome, especially since live performances of it seem so lackluster, IMHO. But the keyboard solo still throws me: it sounds so much like a guitar on the "pull-offs" and "trills" that I was amazed to learn it was Derek, not John. HK: The best DT instrumental so far, IMHO. I was never a fan of Ytsejam (the song) and Erotomania grew tedious after a while, but I still really love this song, especially the synchronized runs at the end. LitS: I still am completely indifferent on this song. Much like Scarred, it sounds like a band trying to be DT, not DT being DT. Plus the keys in the opening seem to muddy to me. TAMP: Fuck you all, I love this song. It reminds me of Talking Heads in a way. And since I've never heard the demo, I haven't been poisoned on this yet. JLMB: Just a good fun DT song where they demonstrate why they're the most talented ensemble in existence. Derek and John's trade-off in the solo still makes me laugh. I could never have that kind of timing. AL: This grew on me with every listen. It seems like something QR might have written for Promised Land. The lyrics are a little phreaquey, but the slide solo is so cool... ToT: This is a great album song, but a terrible live tune. It's a song that you just want to close your eyes and concentrate on every nuance. I am interested to hear it on OiaL, but when I saw them in NYC, it was a poor choice with which to close the set. Overall, this album has a more lasting sound and impact than Awake or WDADU, but is about equal with I&W, maybe slightly above. ACOS is hard for me to gauge as it is almost two separate entities: ACOS and the live stuff. Now that I've bored you into submission, I'll go watch Frasier.

    >Well, Shirley may be able to make it sound cleaner, but it wouldn't have been >as prog... cause Shirley is the man they have come in and make it sound more >"commercial"... bah > >I'm kinda GLAD Shirley had NOTHING to do with Impact.

They use Shirley to make it sound more "commercial?" When's the last time you heard something like "Universal Mind" on the radio? LTE wasn't close to commercial. Shirley did a hell of a job on LTE, and on FII for that matter. He rocked the house on FII; FINALLY we get to hear Myung. DT seemed like they really liked his work, and I hope they keep using him.

    >But on a positive note... Petrucci really kicks some serious ass on Impact, >he dishes out some good note selections. I think the main problem with the >mix was that too many effx were used, saturating the recording too much.

Petrucci just continues to amaze me. He gets better and better and better. I'm glad he decided to start using a wah lately, although he does go a little overboard with it.. blah.
