The new singer is good but I preffer their first singer.

sorry for the double post. this reminds me of something my music teacher used to say during recording: "If you're gonna mess up, do it in key!" Heheh. And he's got a point. When recording original music (covers are obviously a different matter), you can allow for a few mistakes as long as they sound ok (i.e. in key :) - gotta keep in mind that most people won't know you didn't mean to play that. :) There's a few mistakes in my band's latest recording that we left there, and you can hear them perfectly, but you cna't ell they're mistakes if you weren't there while we were writing or rehearsing the song. And most people won't listen much live... Even if they do, who cares? Bands change stuff. So yeah. That's my dissertation on mistakes. Nothin to do with the original topic. But hey, that's what i'm here for. Moo.

I'm probably near alone on this, but I love that kind of stuff. Being more an arranger than a songwriter, I've created several similar things myself. I'm fine with anyone else quoting their influences as well, as long as it's not a matter of "getting away with it." And trying to hide the similarities. For example, I've done a sort of off the cuff instrumental "Steve jam" with a few bands where everyone trades solos over alternating parts of Steve Vai's The Audience is Listening and Stevie Ray Vaughan's Pride and Joy, suitably altered for smooth transitions. If I were to record this however, I would be sure to note prominently the sources I borrowed from. Remember, there's no shame in borrowing as long as you do it with style.

Sorry about the big combined post. I had lots of short things to say and I thought you'd rather see this than 4 consecutive posts. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------- << can't agree with you more. I consider Mangini the BEST drummer out there (you HAVE to see him doing a solo). >>

I agree totally! I saw him with Steve Vai on the first G3 tour and his performance floored me. Can't say I've ever heard him solo though. I'll have to look into that. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------- Atypical Prog Sighting: I was in a Borders bookstore yesterday and I was browsing through CDs when I noticed that LTE was prominently on display and at a listening station, with a glowing little review posted next to it. Can't wait till it reaches many an unsuspecting mainstream ear. The world is officially a better place. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------- << What are your favorite drum solos? >>

Well, my experience of drum solos is somewhat limited, but off the top of my head: John Bonham: Moby Dick -any live version of this is a testament to his incredible stamina...really cool technique with the hands too. And this is really half assed, but doesn't Terry Bozzio's quick fill in Titties and Beer (Zappa in New York) right after "there was her titties flop floppin'..." just MAKE the song? I think so... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------- << > What I don't get is how everyone likes State of Grace. Is it only me > who finds it sort of boring and uncompelling? >>

THANK YOU!!! Much as I love LTE, State of Grace quite frankly strikes me as filler material. I have no problem with the fact that it's not exactly a wankfest, but it sounds a little contrived for my tastes. If you're burned out on SoG, Vai's For the Love of God is an instrumental with real emotion to burn. I play that to everyone who gives me that "technique vs. feel" bullshit.

Well, I saw it last night. It was a good movie, it was intense, but it wasn't the greatest thing since sliced bread. Tom Hanks and Spielberg have both tended to have their pictures overestimated over the last few years. I think it overdid it on bludgeoning the audience with gore - the "war is hell" thing has been done since Apocalypse Now, this wasn't anything new. The characters were your standard military movie archetypes; the scared kid, the macho guy, the intense one, the wisecracker, the CO just trying to do the right thing in a tough spot...nothing new.

All in all, worth the seven bucks, but not my fave of the year.

Tried setting them to 14.4k, which is my connection speed, and it still buffered only seconds at a time. The old RealPlayer, however, buffers enough to play over eleven minutes without pausing. Plus it boots up as fast as WinAmp, as opposed to G2 which boots slower than Netscape.

Chris commented on John Petrucci's accuracy with:

    > I don't think I've heard him > screw up on the parts requiring great technical proficiency, just simple > rhythms. Comments and opinions?

Speaking as a guitarist (or any musician), there is a simple reason why ALL US MUSICIAN'S screw up the easy parts and nail the difficult runs. I know that after I have played a song "x" amount of times with a band - you start to go into auto pilot mode. The auto pilot mode usually switches to manual for the parts that require a little more concentration (although you can even play amazingly difficult parts on auto pilot after so many repetitions).

So when do musicians screw up? When in the middle of a song you think to yourself "what am I playing? My hands are just doing it. I am not even thinking about it. Maybe I better start to think about it" and then BLAMO you have a shaky transition from auto to manual and your hands lose their robot like movements. You can usually recover very quickly, but the fact is you messed up. And it is usually during the EASY parts when you have so much time to let THOUGHTS fuck you up.

This is why I in particular love to CHANGE songs as I play (usually subtle) so I never go into the dreaded auto pilot mode. It is the fine line between I can nail it and I would have nailed it if I hadn't lost track of time while playing it because I don't have to think to play it. It isn't really the not thinking that messes you up - it is the transition from not thinking to thinking.

OR maybe he just screwed up to make James LaBrie feel better OR maybe he saw a babe OR maybe he just likes to mess with YOUR mind.
