Mike "Go West, Young Man" Bahr originally said:
    >>Go see it. See it NOW. It's hands down the best movie of the year, and
    >>is fighting Braveheart in my mind for the title of most realistic war

    Then he said:

    >Similarly, though I have not been involved in a war, it is not too
    >difficult to tell the realism level based on what's being seen during
    >those respective films.

I disagree. You make the claim that SPR is fighting (har, har) Braveheart
for most realistic war film, and then you say it's not hard to tell
the realism level. I say there is no connection. I think it's damn
hard to tell the realism level if a.) you haven't been there or b.)
    you aren't a student/expert of/on the era's military history/tactics/etc.
I am not doubting that SPR's scenes are realistic, I am just saying
that we, the lay people, have to take the experts' word for it, and
in the case of Braveheart, NO ONE knows for sure. Yeah, I am picking
    nits, Nyah, nyah, nyah.

No one is saying that Mike Bahr must be a combat vet in order to enjoy
the films, only that to make a claim about the films' authenticity is a stretch.

Then again, as Dennis Miller says, I could be wrong...

    Hello,
Well, no one has mentioned Type O for this thread, so I will. "Love You To
Death" brings tears to my eyes. Also G N' R's Estranged tears my heart out.
There are also a ton of songs that to some people are happy, but because of
memories I've attached to them, they depress the hell out of me. Chris
Isaak's and Peter Gabriel's entire catalogs would be two examples. Sting,
    too.
Sometimes its nice to sit back with a stack of CDs and just play the
depressing songs to vent all that emotion. Space Dye Vest and Eve tend to
get played when I do that. Some other songs I'll throw in:

    On And On - Longpigs
Divine - Jason Bieler (Saigon Kick's frontman)
In My Darkest Hour - Megadeth
    Road To Nowhere - Ozzy
    Changes - Sabbath
Don't Tell Me - Van Halen
Eyes Of Mercy - October Project
Rock A Bye Bye - Extreme
    Baroque - Joe Satriani
    I Can't Take It - Cheap Trick
Beautiful Girl, By My Side - INXS
    Valentine's Day - Bruce Springsteen
Every Breath You Take - The Police
No Holly for Ms. Quinn, Exile - Enya

I think I'll quit before someone gets really pissed. Now I'm in the mood to
hear half of those songs, so I'll head up to my little listening chamber
now. Oh, and I agree whole-heartedly with Brick and Black as selections,
but I don't own those discs. Sorry for the clutter!

    Hey Jammers-
Anyone know of an audio program that allows you to slow down a sample
while retaining the original pitch? I know there are a few gizmos on the
market that allow you to do this, but I was just wondering if anyone came up
with a program that does this as well.

I'm sitting here listening to Stream of Consciousness and I realized that
every time I hear Petrucci screw-up, it's usually on an easy part. He
screws up pretty bad during the keyboard solo in BMS, and again during the
first heavy part in PMU. Don't get me wrong, the guy is still my fave
guitarist, but I find it a little odd. I don't think I've heard him
screw up on the parts requiring great technical proficiency, just simple
    rhythms. Comments and opinions?

Do not use RealPlayer G2 (new beta release), not for anything and
especially not to try and hear Age of Impact. Not only is it slow and
a cpu-hog, but no matter what you set in your preferences it tries to
run Age of Impact at 81kbps. This is fine if you are on a T3, but
if you're on a modem it means you wait for several minutes and listen to
20 seconds, then repeat. Quality's pretty good, though.

Make sure you get RealPlayer 5.0 and go to http://www.liveconcerts.com and
listen to this thing. I've only heard the first 2 minutes so far, but the
    thing fucking rocks.

Pertaining to the 'Drum Solo Thread':

Live, Carter Beaufort of Dave Matthews band has done some PHAT solos.
Dave Weckl, also, has some pretty hairy stuff, but most of stuff is.

    Also, if anyone remembers
UNDER A RAGING MOON by Roger Daltrey,
there is a whole drum solo section in the song
instead of a guitar solo by some pretty cool people
    (Copeland, Powell, Palmer, and more)

But the one by Zakk Starkey (the last solo)
was BY FAR the best. Great off-time solo
even though it's only 8 bars long, it fit
perfectly and was pretty fuckin' impressive.

    Thats it.

showed that Terry Bozzio was part of the band. Is this true? Please tell

I heard this too on the extreme newsgroup, someone said it was a drum
machine with live snare drums played by Nuno but mainly a drum machine, I
dont think so....also someone pointed that there's a part where the drums
go out of time for a while but I dont hear it at all...I read an interview
with paul where he said he used to play very technical stuff and he played
like Neil P. I never hear him play like that, I heard just simple beats....

I dont think this was the reason neither, paul still talk with the other
guys, last month gary cherone and paul badger played a couple of songs in
boston, Im not sure if paul was there but they have been seen haging
    togheter after the break up...

yeah, mangini solos are the best, he can play with one hand what most
people play with both hands...he also can play as left or right handed
    without thinking about it....
I heard there's a bootleg of Nuno and Mike live from one of the 2
presentations they had last month in UK, at the mad about music
festival...they played a funked up version of cupid's dead too....I gotta
listen to that, they played some new songs too....
there's a new Extreme mailing list running now so email me if you are
interested in joinin, I lost the info for the subscribing thing but i can
ask for it again....personally I would like to listen to some kind of
Liquid tension experiment with petrucci and mangini...

howdy, i just resubbed to the jam. I see I've walked right into the middle of a "sad song" thread. Has anyone mentioned the Cure? Lessee: From The Edge Of The Deep Green Sea is my favorite sad song, with The Same Deep Water As You at a close second. I don't think it's a coinkydink that these, and a few of the Cure's other great songs, are so saturated(no pun intended) with water imagry. Sinking, drowning, dark skies raining, fucking sad, man. Water imagary is pretty damn powerful. In fact, now that i think about it, DT also has water songs aplenty.

Does anyone else get really choppy sound when they try to listen to this? Or am I just on a sucky ISP?? I'm connected at 33.6, and the stream is 32. ADVICE: don't sign up with Bellsouth.net!! also, does John Petrucci play on every track, or just certain ones? I guess I'll find out when it arrives in a few days. Oh yeah, and one more thing..... I'm a drummer, and I just ordered a guitar because I want to learn how to play. It's an Ibanez GRX20 . I know it sucks, but hey, it's cheap!!! Does anyone have some advice on good books, video's or CD roms that would help a beginner? I'm a fast learner, and I already know music theory and stuff, I think I just need something to show me all the chord and scale positions, then I can take it from there.
