I recently received three different Dream Theater bootlegs, all from
the Falling Into Infinity tour. Since I received all three around the
same time, it's only natural for me to make some comparisons. So here
is my combined review of "Stream of Consciousness," "Fasten Your
Seatbelts," and "Static Progress." I figure that this review will
be useful to any of y'all who are considering buying one of these
bootlegs, but can't decide which one to buy.

DISCLAIMER: Anyone who buys any of these discs, or any DT boots for
that matter, darn well better also buy Dream Theater's official live
2-CD set (and video!) when it is released later this year! No matter
how good these bootlegs are, it is VERY unlikely that they will be
better than the official release. Also, there's the question of who
your money goes to. I personally would rather mine go to Dream
Theater. They're the ones who put in all the hard work to bring us
these live performances. OK, enough said.

First some general information on each bootleg:

    STREAM OF CONSCIOUSNESS
    Label: Prism Records (Mike Bahr)
    Web Site: http://www.goodnet.com/~durnik/
    Price: $30 + $1 for U.S. shipping (previously $40, before that $34)
    Format: 2 CD-R
Source: House of Blues, Los Angeles, CA; November 11, 1997
              (internet broadcast)

    FASTEN YOUR SEATBELTS
    Label: ? (Nick Bogovich)
    Web Site: http://web.mit.edu/bogie/dt/fys.html
Price: $25 (includes shipping to a U.S. address)
    Format: 2 CD-R
Source: The Roxy, Boston, MA; December 13, 1997 (audience recording)

    STATIC PROGRESS
Label: Open All Night Records (Felix and Volodya)
    Web Site: http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Mezzanine/9326/oan.htm
Price: $29 (includes shipping to a U.S. address)
    Format: 2 CD-R
Source: Palais d'Aurone, Bourges, France; April 17, 1998 (audience
              recording)

Now for comparisons in the following categories: sound quality,
performance, set list, packaging, bonus material, and delivery time:

    SOUND QUALITY:

All three have good sound, but Static Progress wins easily. I can
safely say that this is one of the best sounding audience recordings
I have ever heard. The sound is excellent from beginning to end, and
the audience noise is prominent only between songs.

Fasten Your Seatbelts also has good sound for an audience recording,
but definitely not as good as Static Progress.

Stream of Consciousness is a bit of a disappointment in terms of sound
quality. It is advertised as a "soundboard" recording (which is
*technically* true), but it was actually recorded from an internet
broadcast of a soundboard recording, so it exhibits symptoms of audio
compression. It has a somewhat "compressed" sound, and just doesn't
have much "punch" to it. It also has a few skips (places where as
much as several seconds of audio have been omitted). From the
information on the Prism Records home page, it sounds like this is
    the best boot that could have been made from this internet broadcast;
unfortunately the internet broadcast was far from perfect. (As an
aside, I find it interesting that the Prism Records home page made
little or no mention of these sonic flaws until *after* many units of
Stream of Consciousness had been shipped....)

All in all, I'd place Fasten Your Seatbelts just slightly ahead of
Stream of Consciousness on sound quality. They both have roughly
equal sound quality, except that FYS doesn't have the occasional skips
that SoC has. (And, as previously stated, Static Progress beats them
    both!)

    PERFORMANCE:

DT's performance is very good on all three bootlegs. Static Progress
is very high-energy (listen to Portnoy singing the first line of Take
the Time!). Fasten Your Seatbelts has a more intimate feel; probably
it was recorded in a smaller club. Stream of Consciousness is a good
solid performance with lots of energy in the encore.

    SET LIST:

If you were to buy one of these bootlegs based simply on set list,
you would probably choose either Stream of Consciousness or Static
Progress. Both have great, but very different, set lists. Stream of
Consciousness has the typical set list from the first leg of the U.S.
tour, including Lines in the Sand, Voices, Scarred, and Metropolis.
It also includes one of the very few performances of NightMare
Cinema! Static Progress includes Take The Time/Freebird, Scarred,
Trial of Tears, and Speak to Me. The Fasten Your Seatbelts setlist
is merely a subset of the Stream of Consciousness setlist. The only
thing that FYS has that SoC doesn't is the "Fasten Your Seatbelts"
version of Ytse Jam. However, that version of Ytse Jam is also
    present on Static Progress.

It is worth mentioning that the shows at which Fasten Your Seatbelts
and Static Progress were recorded were both slightly shortened sets
(in FYS, the club owners made DT shorten their set; in Static
Progress, DT played very late at night after two other bands).

    PACKAGING:

All three have good packaging. Static Progress has the most
professional-looking CD liners, with Fasten Your Seatbelts a close
second. The liners for Stream of Consciousness were a bit annoying.
Not only did I have to cut them myself, but they were quite crumpled
as a result of poor packing. As for the discs themselves, Stream of
Consciousness and Static Progress both have nice disc labels (Soc's
are painted on, while Static Progress has the sticky kind). Fasten
Your Seatbelts simply has "DT FYS1" and "DT FYS2" written in black
marker on the middle of the discs.

    BONUS MATERIAL:

Fasten Your Seatbelts has perhaps the most appropriate bonus
material, namely demos of songs from FII and of one non-FII song
(Cover My Eyes). Static Progress has the best bonus tracks in terms
of sound quality, however they are taken from Mind Control, a fairly
common bootleg. The first bonus track on Stream of Consciousness is
very cool -- Portnoy singing the end of "Surrounded." The other two
bonus tracks ("Lie," and "Metropolis 1" with Dominici on vocals) are
    cool, but not particularly memorable.

    DELIVERY TIME:

(I measure the delivery time as the number of days elapsed from the
day I place my payment in the mail to the day I receive the discs.)
The competition wasn't even close in this category. Static Progress
won hands down with a delivery time of 20 days. Not only that, but
Open All Night e-mailed me when they received my payment, and again
when they shipped my order. Fasten Your Seatbelts came in a distant
second place, at almost 2.5 months. Stream of Consciousness came
in an even more distant third, at almost 6.5 months.

    SUMMARY:

In summary I would say FIRST buy the OFFICIAL DT live album and
video. Then if your thirst for live DT still has not been quenched,
I would recommend getting Static Progress (for its superior sound
quality, energetic performance, and short delivery time), or possibly
Stream of Consciousness (for its set list, particularly Nightmare
    Cinema).

Sorry this was so long, but hopefully it will be informative to some
of the potential bootleg buyers out there.

On last night's episode of the Ytsejam,
Ville Rassi conjured up a ten minute snare-roll and then said:

    being absolutely
amazing for a guy who only used one bassdrum, one snare, one tom and one

      Incredible!

    - Mike Portnoy's solo on the LiT video

    - Tesla - "Don't de-rock me" (don't know their drummer's name, only have it

    - Alex Van Halen's solo on Live:RHRN

There have to be others, if only I could remember them.

OK. This threat is a little bit old, but I just wanted to make things clear. Paul Geary DID play the drums on Cupid's Dead. I mean, can't you tell? The part isn't too complicated. That's definetly his style, pretty simple. Besides the the fact that they played that song during the entire tour. I don't think that anyone in the world would write such an ass-kicking song and not play it live.

Well, I'm not pretty sure about this, but I think he wasn't quite getting along with the rest of the band...

I can't agree with you more. I consider Mangini the BEST drummer out there (you HAVE to see him doing a solo). Also, I have met him twice, and I have to say that he's the nicest, funniest person ever. (Can't wait to hear Nuno's project with Mike Mangini and Donovan Bettencourt)

    I know plenty about war.

I don't have to wear a 49ers jersey and make $100,000 every Sunday during the fall to know a good tackle when I see one, or a botched assignment when someone fouls up.

Similarly, though I have not been involved in a war, it is not too difficult to tell the realism level based on what's being seen during those respective films. They're entertainment, not history... but they have been carefully constructed with authenticity in mind.

And we DO have educational facilities that we use for a time during our formative years, I've heard. :)

TOTALLY. That song is gorgeous. That line "I know someday you'll have a beautiful life/I know you'll be the sun/In someone else's sky/But why, why, why, can't it be mine?" rips my heart out every time. I dont care if it is about some guy masturbating with clay, it is still gorgeous.

Then there is DT. LTL is, of course, THE perfect song, and sad too, with a bit of an uplifting feel. There is none higher. But that is given :)

Unfortunately, I tend to agree. It reminds me too much of Pachabel's Canon...It is just too sappy and contrived for my taste. I always skip it.

    > But it's not all bad. Girl I love said it was pretty. Maybe she'll > come around from her Matchbox 20-listening loser ways.

Hey now, M20 is a pretty damn good band. Along with 3EB, Creed, Live, Pearl Jam and others, Matchbox20 is on top of the pile that I listen to when I dont want to have to sit and think and stand in awe of the talent streaming through my brain. They write catchy, groovy little tunes.

Speaking of Creed, I find these guys to be surprisingly good. The guitars are all tuned down to give the disc a much darker, moodier feel, but it works, and the actual music is pretty intelligently written and played. There are even hints of prog here and there...It isnt 4/4 throughout. I like to call them a mix between Metallica and Stone Temple Pilots, because Ill be damned if it isnt whats-his-face from STP singing.

A sad song I fell in love with a week or two back is "Motorcycle Drive-By" by Third Eye Blind. Catchy, emotional, and it makes you think there is some deeper meaning. Maybe there is, maybe there isnt, but I still liked it enough to learn the lyrics in 4 days.

    Then there is old school...

GNR's "Dont Cry" Metallica's "Fade To Black" and "Nothing Else Matters" Live's "Lightning Crashes." Boyz II Men "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye" and "End of the Road." (Some seriously talented song writers...) Police "Every Breath You Take"

    And of course...

    Hanson - Mmmmbop... (Is that 3 m's or 4?) I cry everytime I hear this one :.(..

    <smirk>

    Later all.

    Jon
