Absolutely nothing.
On another, earlier thread about great live recordings, "Frampton
Comes Alive" should qualify as one of the best live albums of all
time. Especially since it was so much better than the studio versions
of his songs.

It's really dependent on many things. There're several different cases that could arise:
The music was written, and sections just happened to seem similar to something else. That's fine.
The music was written with the similar piece purposefully in mind, causing the similarity, almost like a tip of the hat to the original composer. That's fine too.
The music was just copied for the copier to take credit for somebody else's work. This is obviously wrong.
But in the end, music is an art form, and to limit it with rules would be wrong. A real musician would not do the third of these things, simple as that.

Speaking of ripoff's, has anyone noticed the similarities, albeit a small one (ben stein anyone? (: ) between Symphony X's "Through the Looking Glass, to other prog songs. Here goes:
9:51-10:13= this section, specially the bass line sounds all too familiar to LITS ( the beggining too )
10:24-10:34= This sounds similar to Rush's Natural Science although not that closely.
11:41-11:51= Again here.. the stop/start instrument thing is basically taken out of Rush's Jacob ladder.
I mean its not exactly ripping off...im just pointing out stuff that when i listen to it instantly make me think of those other songs.

Howdy!
Someone asked what the songs were in the preview for Ever After. Well, they glued themselves into my head too, so I found out and got one of em (getting the other soon). The first song in the preview (the one in the theater) is a remix of a Loreena McKennitt tune. I forget which album and which song, but you should be warned... the original version doesn't have the thumpy techno electronix and stuff.. it's just original Celtic music with some accompaniment. Several Loreena fans think this is sacrilige the way it was modified. The other song in the preview is "Fable" by Robert Miles. I bought the album, and am somewhat disappointed in that it's a bit more simple than I'd hoped. That track is excellent, as are one or two others, but he often just ignores the option of filtering and modifying his loops... a great example of someone making electronic music "work" like that, thus staying dynamic and interesting (and it's not as easy as you think) is Orbital, the album In Sides, in particular. I could make an MP3 of Fable if anyone wants it. It's a sort of Bjork-y thing in a way... I really dig it. I still have to buy some (all) of Loreena's stuff... I heard a lot of it about 4 years ago and hated it. Now I think it's sick and awesome. Speaking of movies... this is a great time for movies right now... at LEAST 2 great movies in the theater right now. Saving Private Ryan is amazing. I really did expect more of a "movie plot" instead of a "war plot" but this movie is really serious and hard core. There is no Titanic-esque wankery here. Mike Bahr in saying that it was realistic mirrored the statements of several war analysts and historians. Apparently psychologists are concerned that this movie will traumatize WWII Veterans. It was a real shocker... there were times where my mouth was wide open in shock, and I was seriously afraid that if I blinked I'd miss something. Great film. It's going to win some heavy awards. Great movie number 2: Something About Mary. It looks dumb, and at times it looks corny... but it ain't. I'm considering seeing it a third time... it's definitely the most I've ever laughed in a theater... you can't imagine how funny this movie is... this one will also shock you--several times. Check it out!
Oh, and to those of you who have met Bafu in person, see Saving Private Ryan and tell me if the guy who is hard of hearing because of the German grenade reminds you of him. He totally made me think of Bafu for some reason.

I'm cool with it as long as they're not blatantly plagiarising(hope I spelled that right) somebody else's stuff. There's enough being ripped-off in the commercial circuit already. It seems to me like being really original these days is damn near impossible. But then again, I thought the same thing just before I got I&W, so hey, you never know.
