Hey everyone....I was at the Portnoy Clinic in Dallas on 07/22.....It
    was pretty DAMN AWESOME!!!!!
MP played through 4 tunes from LTS and Erotomania. In between the
tunes he talked about the music and fielded questions from the crowd
which must have been at leaste two hundred or more. All in all it was
awesome. There were three people using camcorders.....if any of you
are on this list please contact me. I will PAY for a copy. If you
want to know more send me an e-mail.

    Glen

P.S. To Mr. Portnoy: I was the guy just to the left of your hi hat and
splashes in the RED shirt. I was giving you some hell....but you took
it well by pretty much ignoring me! Just Kidding. You're the best.

Hey hey, I was just watching the Megadeth Evolver (making of youthanasia)
video and i realized that would be a really cool thing for DT to release. a
'making of' video to go with their next studio CD. I realize that it'd be
difficult with them already releasing a video in october, but it'd be cool
nonetheless. A chance to see DT in the studio setting, which would satisfy
all the musicians, but it can be done to interest non-musicians as well,
like the megadeth video. I think that'd be cool. Maybe it'd be a
possibility 2 CDs down the line... Just a thought. Of course it'd be cool
to get Mike's ideas on this, but everyone says that and he never replies,
so i aint holding my breath :) But yeah. Moo.

TOTALLY!!! Nope, you're not losing your mind... and by you posting this, it
confirms that I, in fact, have not lost my mind either. :-) I have heard
Spice in that song ever since the first time I listened to the album.

I don't have the lyrics in front of me, but it's that part when Jon sez "You
know you shouldn't do it, but you do it anyway". That whole part reminds me
of some sucky ass Spice song whose title escapes me at the moment. :-)

    Hello,
Since people are posting about what DT songs they have tried to learn on
their respective instruments, I thought I'd throw in some flame bait. I
have only ever bothered with two DT songs: PMU and TWIUTB. Why? Because DT
is completely NOT my playing style. I recently had a conversation with a
friend who put it to me simply: "You're never going to pass that metal
phase, are you?" I respond that no matter what, I'll always listen to
metal, 'cause its what I play. He says I should try playing jazz, and I
discovered something quite astonishing (to me at least): I don't think in
other musical terms when I pick up my guitar. 80% of what I've written is
    straight metal.
There are some songs in there that are Collective Soul and Cheap Trick
sounding, and a few Satch-esque instrumental pieces, but most of the time,
the riffs and phrasing that come to mind are metal. My point? I have none
of course. But this is why I never got into learning to play DT. I never
considered them straight metal, so I stuck to figuring out Megadeth songs
and left the DT playing to OFB.
And thanks to Marcelo for metioning Viper. Rogerio taped this for me a
while back and your mentioning it has given me the hankering to give them a
listen again. For those who've never heard them, they remind me of a less
    proggy Angra. Good stuff.

I'm not at all questioning musicianship of the players... I've heard them
all play a million times, live and recorded... I'm just saying that LTE was
OBVIOUSLY put together in a very short time. From a technical standpoint -
Amazing. From an emotional standpoint - Ehh... not bad... (i'm not
talking abuot balads. Emotion in music comes in many forms in MANY
different ways. i.e. Emotion from the Mirror being some sort of anger comes
    from the presision of it.)

I guess that makes it 4 cents...

Well, I must say that I started playing with 2 teachers (via their CD's) Kenny Arnoff (renowned drummer for John (Couger) Melloncamp) He's a no- frills but all around good drummer who managed to teach me everything that was possible to do in 4/4 time. One thing that Arnoff is good at is melodic drumming. His ghost notes on the snare are great, and that has helped me now. The second is Paul Geary from Extreme, pre-Mangini drummer. His drumming was great, but still basic. I really got better from listening to him play and coming up with my own beats for stuff that he did that was a little too basic for the song; I think this is why he left Extreme. Nuno was kind of disappointed that Paul couldn't do all that Nuno wanted on III sides to every story. Nuno actually sequenced the drum part on Cupids dead so that it was the way he wanted it. This is probably why Extreme never played Cupid's dead live while Paul was the drummer. Now for influences I listen to Portnoy (can't really play a lot of his stuff, but I sure am intrigued) and Peart. Peart is the king of snare drum and melodic drumming. I recommend getting "A work in Progress" DEFINATELY worth every dime! P.S.: Andrew, I'm glad that you liked Viper's "Theatre of Fate" and I do agree with the fact that they sound like Angra -- and the reasons aren't just because Andre' Matos was/is the singer of both bands: the compositions are similar. Of course, Angra has evolved a bit with time and left those melodic heavy metal foundations to pursue a more symphonic sound now... Anyway, I'm glad that you liked that trade... It was a long time ago... :-)

As for the DT songs that I learned first (on bass), i figured out some of I&W and when I bought Awake, I figured out Erotomania, LIE, and Voices. Now, with the help of tab, I mastered Erotomania, and most of I&W. Now my current project (now that i finally have WDADU) is Ytsejam. As for FII, i'm still awaiting its arrival from BMG.

Hey boys and girls! I just saw Alice Cooper thurs. night and it was a pretty cool show. His band is great. As you can tell from my sub heading, our brotha Derek was on keys. Also, Alice had Reb Beach on guitar (whom he's had for awhile) and Eric Singer from KISS. What a great line up! I was surprised to see Derek there though, because I hadn't heard anything about him joining Alice's summer tour. Now I'm assuming that he's just doing this as a side thing until DT hits the road w/ Deep Purple, I mean, he's still w/ DT hopefully, right? Anyways, the show was great and I got some cool pics of Derek, Alice, and Reb on stage, and I got 2 picks from Reb- who was totally cool. I also got to meet Reb outside after the show right before the tour bus was about to take off. Now don't flame me too much, because I know he was w/ Winger and shit, but the guy CAN play, you can't deny that. I didn't get to meet up w/ Derek because he took off immediately after the show with some gorgeous blonde-(she must be his keyboard instructor!....yeah, right!) But did anyone else know Derek was gonna tour w/ Alice? It was a cool surprise, but it just made me wonder. Later jammers! Justin PS- Alice never did come out of the bus.

    Hi all,

Sorry for the NDTC, but I wouldn't know where else to ask this stuff.

I've been playing with the idea of going to M.I. in California (if I ever get the money together !), and I was just wondering if it's really all it's cracked up to be. I got their catalog a couple of weeks ago, and it just seems like THE thing to do. Facilities sound great, got a chance to live, eat and breathe music for a couple of months (or longer ...). Anyway, all views on this are most welcome. Private email is fine.

Staying on the topic of M.I., I remember someone telling me that M.I. opened a school in the UK as well. I'd really prefer to go to Ca, but if travel costs and the cost of living are too high I would settle for England. So if anyone has an address, phone/fax number or email, please send it to me, so I can contact them to compare the two. By the way, if the UK doesn't have a keyboard course, don't bother. I don't see myself strapping my synth around my neck and picking it :-)

Now to jump on this thread about learning DT, what songs do the keyboardists among you recommend as a starting point? I've started on TTT, but the solos are really a bitch to learn. Anything simpler I can start with?

    Thanks

I received my promo tape last week, so I'm sure yours will arrive soon too... Took a couple of months, but they probably got a lot more requests than they bargained for. Also, keep in mind that the tapes are being dubbed one by one and that actually SELLING their music probably has a slightly higher priority than sending out free tapes. :)
