I also have the demo tape that I got for free from the band. I think

I think I agree with you on that, but I for one still like LTE. Though it may not have the power and depth of DT, it's still (and maybe this is just because I'm a musician) damn cool to hear good musicians just jamming and enjoying it. In my opinion, the thing that makes LTE worthwhile is that it maintains diversity and inventiveness throughout the wankery, which raises it above the level of, say (and I'm just inviting flames here...) your average Shrapnel Records release, or even (dare I say) Yngwie Malmsteen. I know I'm going to get responses citing State of Grace and Osmosis are counterexamples to this, but...hmm...the only way I can put this (and this is just my opinion) is to use Steve Vai as an analogy. What I hear there is more Hand on Heart than For the Love of God in terms of musicianship. That said, LTE still kicks ass and will provide me with years of challenge as I attempt to learn the guitar parts...Paradigm Shift intro anyone...?

I dunno, but it seems that the Universal Mind intro is much harder than paradigm shift... i've only bfiefly tried playing both, but i could get paradigm to sound recognizable... Not a chance with universal mind. it's all arpeggios... Yet everyone seems to obsess with the paradigm shift intro like it's the hardest thing on the cd... i dunno, is there some really easy way to play universal mind that i don't know about? is it actually something that billie joe could play with two fingers (oops, redundancy) and i just suck too much to figure it out? if so, i'd like to hear about it :) Moo.

Exsqueeze me? Baking powder? Are you sure you're not one of those guys off the r.m.p. newsgroup? They seem to think LTE is empty as well. I just don't get it. You didn't feel any emotion? Did you listen to the whole album or just fragments? Did you listen to "State of Grace"? It almost sounds like two people crying over a long lost love, together. The whole album is emotion-laden. Maybe you should listen to it again, and again, and again. No emotion? What the hell do you want? The typical 4 minute ballads? Go listen to Bon Jovi !

Yah, the music store over here is no charge for clinics, too. Too bad i missed it when Craig Chaquico came by. =) Anway, though, it's kind of bogus to miss the clinic just because the music center wants a little profit. If it's worth $10 to you to see Portnoy, by all means pay it. Mike gets payed for these all the same, so I don't know that he minds so much (except the people who won't show because of the surcharge), but if no one shows up to his clinics, then he might not be doing them anymore, ya know? But kick the collector in the jimmy as you enter and brand him with the 'M' symbol. But seeing as how Mike likely won't show his goofy mug around here anytime soon, could someone please tell him that Korg would like one of his used collostomy bags? Thanks.
Anyway, to all the recommendations, I swallowed my pride and bought Dave Weckl's Rhythm of the Soul album. I, for one, never have clicked with jazz. Ever. However, this whole album has blown me away. It's very intense, and the musicianship is great. It's still test tube music, but hell, I don't have a problem with that. :) The musicianship's what i wanted to hear out of this anyway. it groks. Get it.

i've ordered from the laser's edge on a half dozen occasions... each time i paid by check, and each time i received my discs within 3 weeks, sometimes 2. as was mentioned many times previously, do check the availability of the disc first... make sure it's in stock.
as for keyboard solos... I was at Rog=E9rio's yesterday, and while we were copying some stuff we were also listening to some other stuff. He was showing a CD he made from some MP3's he had, and then it started to play a song when Rog=E9rio asked "Don't you recognize that?". At first I had the impression to already have heard that thing, but it didn't come to my mind. When the vocals came in, I remembered, "Ah, that's Empty Tremor..." (It was "Slice of Life"). The Rog=E9rio reached his CD collection and brought Viper's "Theatre of Fate" saying "Listen to this!", and I remembered: the beginning of ET's "Slice of Life" is EXACTLY the SAME as Viper's "Illusion", or, in the least, very very close. Check it for yourselves. :-)=09
ALso, finally I had some money in hand and my copy o LTE has arrived (YEAH!), along with Deep Purple's "Abandon". Really awesome disc up to now! (Freedom of Speech is playing.)

Here's a message from tha Netherlands again concerning a few subjects.
1. DT-SKIN FOR WINAMP
I've downloaded this one, it's very easy to use: just unzip everything into the skins-folder in your winamp-folder, making sure it all end's up in a new folder called DT-skin or some other name. That's it!, Personally I think it's a bit too busy too look at, I like the COOLAMP-skin more, which you can download from www.winamp.com.
2. BASS-TABS FOR DT SONGS
Being a devoted bass player and DT-addictee I've transcribed allmost every basspart in all DT-songs up to AWAKE. I'm still working on the parts in COS and FII, but John Myung's technique is evolving more rapidly than mine is, but hey, he had a head-start of ten years or so to me. But for some very tricky parts as the tap-solo and the complex interlude in Metropolis partI, I've been searching for DT-tablature on the net only to discover that the ones I found untill now are not usable for playing these really tricky parts. I think I can even say I've found them to be really dissapointing! They don't even seem to be written by a bass- player at all. (I'm talking about the transcriptions on the Under a Cyber Moon site.) They are just simplified impressions of what's really being played. And I'm talking SIMPLIFIED, here! For instance, the two-handed tapping parts in Metropolis. I know how to play them by now, but it looks as if the author of these transcriptions has never seen Dream Theater live! He doesn't even transcribe them as two handed tapping. Does anyone of you REAL bassplayers out there share this opinion? Please respond if you do so. Also respond if you don't, ofcourse, or if you know a site whith reliable transcriptions.
3. MY BEST BASS-SOLO'S AND STUFF
Jaco Pastorius-all of his work, esp. live! Micheal Manring-all of his pieces for solo-bass.
As for John M., I really admire his technique and the way he incorporates the things he playes in Dream Theater. (By the way, listen to Cynic's Shawn Malone on there album Focus if you want to hear real technical playing in heavy music). But for real good bass-solos I'd rather listen to modern fusion instead. A lot of the music happening here is really much more technically advanced than any prog or sympho music, even DT. (I can't believe I'm saying this, but believe me, it's not a joke!) Like the new bassplayer in Joe Zawinul's 'Zawinul Syndicate'. On a concert in Holland at the North Sea Jazz-festival he played a superfast solo, doubbling it with his own singing. Really thrilling to see!Maybe this kind of music is a little hard to like (or to complicated) for some of you die-hard prog-lovers, but In my opinion, this is the music in wich there's really happening a lot more! So please, open up your musical minds (and all other minds you've got). There's a lot more going on besides Prog, Sympho or whatever.
4. DT IN HOLLAND
Are there any more Dutch people in the Jam? Please respond, if you don't hate me after the above. Oh yeah, I've asked this before: Does anyone know any new tour data for DT in Europe? And esp. in Holland???
5. OLD DT PAGE
What happened to the old Dream Theater-homepage? Does it still exist? Or has it fused with the UACM-site? Anyone? Or am I sounding stupid?
6. YTSEJAM FOR GRAND_PIANO
Can anyone confirm that this piece (the MP3-file) is played by a real piano-player? And if so, who this pianoplayer is?? Derek, Kevin, anyone??

You could try a helpful French jammer. Ask him (her) to also buy you a copy of the French Metal magazine 'Hard Rock', which has a cover-CD containing an extract 'Speed' from the new album 'Fireworks' and an interview with Andre and Dani from Cradle of Filth.
2) I'll add my voice to those who are praising Vanden Plas, (I'm playing the MP3 of 'Rainmaker' right now!) These guys deserve your support.
3) Mr Gallop has mentioned this already, a week or so ago, but Within temptation have a nifty little EP out, which I've just received from a friend in Holland. Some Great re-mixes of stuff of their 1st Album - Restless, Candles, Pearls of Light and another MP3 (Restless again) to add to the collection. The little multimedia supplement that makes up the first track gives you the low down on the band 3 of whom (out of 6) list DT among their favourite bands!
Since I upgraded my version of Winamp, I have to admit that i'm completely won over by this format. Has anyone on the list invested in one of those MPMan's that are coming out of Korea? Maybe Mr Metzger will investigate for us, when he next makes a visit?

When I first heard DT(about year and a half ago)I knew I had to start spending a lot more time on the drums if I was ever going to learn these songs.What really inspired to learn was the Live in Tokyo video. It was the first time I SAW Portnoy play and I noticed that his style was not very much unlike my own.Since my jaw dropped to the floor in Under a glass moon I figured thatīs the song I should learn to play first.So after a couple of weeks I had learned that song almost note for note(Stick twirls and all).The songs that previously seemed unbelievably hard(Metropolis, TTT...)were easier to learn after that since I got the ball rolling.Now year and a half ago I can play almost every song of every album(Except WDADU).There are few songs that still give me trouble(Scarred, LtL and a few parts of metropolis).
