I was a dumbass and started learning Dream Theater songs first, before I
even looked at the basics of guitar. I baught a guitar, solid state
amp, and the tablature to Images and Words and was confident that I'd
master all songs within eight (no joke...8) days. I thought this was
    possible because:
    1) Sherlock Holmes (I know he's fiction) could master any instrument
(except violin) within 3 days, and I'm pretty friggin' bright.
    2) Look at most of the morons who were decent at guitar at my
highschool. LOOK AT THEM! How hard could it be?
3)Not having played, I honestly couldn't tell the challenging stuff
    (D.T.) from the easy (Offspring).

Needless to say I floundered miserably. However, three years later, I'm
happy to say that I can play everything off of I&W well (not PERFECTLY,
but what fun would it be if there was nothing to shoot for), as well as
everything (almost) on Awake written for 6 string. I'd recomend (if you
go the tablature route) to start with pieces of PMU, erotomania, and LTL
for starters. You wont be able to play everything in them, but enough to
make you want to try more. Try AD and SM for learning chords. TTT,
UAGM, 6:00, and Mpt1 all gave me problems at first, so if you can master
these you know you're doing great (or at least better than me...)

Hope this helps - one more point: DON'T start out on this type of
music. I find myself making stupid mistakes on relatively easy parts
because i started making those mistakes three years ago, while stuff
that can be considered as hard (some Randy Rhoads or Yngwie) comes more
naturally now that I've got a few years under my belt. Get all your
mistakes out of your system on songs you don't care if you play again.

I know that some of you who have been professionally instructed or have
been playing a lot longer will probably disagree, but if you're teaching
    yourself, this should help.

    Take care!

    Hello,
With all this talk about LTE not having a lasting feel, keep in mind the
disc was all about off-the-cuff musical ideas. In the liner notes, it
describes the process of how the songs were written, but one can tell that
much of the playing is spontaneous. With the amount of carefully proscribed
DT, Dregs, and Crimson material these guys have done, they deserve a chance
to just cut loose and see what happens.
I, for one, do hear emotion in some of the performances. And while there
is the requisite element of "wankery" (not meant in a derogatory manner), I
think the energy shows through in this playing. A lot of this music is just
the result of these four guys being excited to play with one another. My
only complaint about the CD is its somewhat difficult to discern Tony Levin
    in the mix at times.
I'm also happy to see that Kevin Shirley has turned into "more than a
producer" for the band. Let's face it, he didn't do LTE for the money. I
always like albums better when it seems that the band had more of a say in
the production. For instance, the best Extreme albums are the where ones
Nuno had a big hand in producing.
As for all this talk about alternatives to Ibanez 7-strings, has anyone
ever played a Schecter? http://www.schecterguitars.com/ has their guitars,
and I must say, I like their appearance, and they have more options than
Ibanez offers (drop-tuner for the low B, trem or fixed-bridge, and more).
I'm not pleased with the RG 7-strings, and Universes are too expensive.
Anyone have opinions on Schecter? They also have a cool 10-string guitar (a
12-string with no octaves for the low E and A).
Lastly, can anyone point me to a website that features either The Stick or
an 8-string guitar a la Charlie Hunter? Thanks.

    Andrew

I thought I was the only person in the world who liked both DT and ICP.
The guy who introduced me to them ( also a Marine) listened to Awake
(which I thought was the easiest to get into for macho guys who like
heavy Maiden-esque type stuff), and said he couldn't get into it. Even
listened to it a few times because i told him how much ass DT kicks. Oh
well, he's a great guy, but kinda limited in musical taste.

And I live in Northern Va. This guy lived in Cleveland, and saw them
live and at promo events many times. They even hit on his girlfriend
once "Hey, who came in with this HOT LOOKIN' BITCH?!?!". My friend STILL
    brags about that.

ICP strikes me as something Mike Portnoy would get a kick out of, seing
as how he does listen to some rap. How about it? Any closet ICP fans
    out there?

Yes. They are still together. I had hooked them up with DCA Records
and they were going to release their album on DCA, but I think DCA
folded. Maybe that's where you heard they had split up. The band ended
up signing with Elevate Records and have now released their new CD
'Eyes Of The Oracle'. We sold out in a week and are waiting for more
copies. The CD is amazing....especially the 20 minute long "Test Of
    Wills".

This is my first post to ytsejam so I hope I don't screw it up and get flamed
for a week. There's been some traffic recently that inspired me make a few
comments. Please remember, they are just my opinions, I could be wrong.

In response to David about learning DT songs (guitar for me, maybe drums for
you?). Man that's a lot of fun huh? Well I did start with PMU and mostly
learned by ear like you. I picked up the I&W book when it came out and that
helped clear up a couple of the stickier licks (like that ascending part only
a couple minutes in). I think Metropolis came after that. I've got it down
fairly well, but I still get hooked up on that excruciatingly fast part about
a minute into the first big instrumental break. The end of that section took
me a LONG time to pick up as well. Ytsejammers will know which one I speak
of. Not even so much because of the fingering but because of the timing.
Damn those guys are good huh? UAGM was probably 3rd, mostly because of the
solo. You cover all kinds of chops in that one. Come to think of it, I'd
learned about as much as I could off of I&W before Awake came out. I didn't
even have WDADU yet and only knew of Ytsejam from the Japan video. I actually
just learned that a couple of weeks ago with a little help from some tab off
of the Under a Cyber Moon page. That's a TON of fun to play.

What really pissed me off about Awake was that I had owned a Universe but sold
it before Awake was released. I was so pissed to hear tunes like Caught in a
Web where I was DYING for my 7-string again! Live and learn. Erotomania was
probably the first song I learned off of Awake. The transcription came out in
Guitar World one month and I loved the tune already.

ACOS...where is my damn 7-string!?!?! I'm so close to buying another one just
so I can jam along with it.

FII has some great stuff to learn as well. I really want to get a
transcription to Millenium. There's a couple parts in the keyboard/guitar
break which I can't pin down. Every now and then I think I've landed it but
not quite. You not me was the first one off of FII that I learned all the way
through. I've noodled with some of the others, but mostly the first 2 songs
    on the album.

I think the "classics" a good ytsejammer (I'm a guitarist so please don't
scream at me keyboardists, bassists, and drummers if your list is different!)
should be able to play through (at least the basics and fake the tough parts) are:
            Ytsejam
            Pull Me Under
            Take the Time
            Metropolis
            Under a Glass Moon
            Learning to Live
            Caught in Web
            Erotomania
            You not Me

I know I've left out the "softer" tunes, but I'm partial to the heavier ones.
I do like the softer side of DT, but not so much to play, more to listen. I'm
also pretty partial to I&W, as I think it's my favorite DT album.

Ok, I know this thread is getting WAY long, but I wanted to say something
quick about the LTE comments floating around. I first have to say that I LOVE
this album. It's the best new CD to hit my player since....FII. :-)
However, I do think some of these people have a point in terms of it not being
not quite as...."polished"....as say any of the DT albums. I don't think it's
fair to say they totally lack any emotion or feel, but they might not have as
much as they could have given more time. I think KorgX3 nailed it when he
said that given more time, the songs would have just kicked even more ass.
And I too hope that if there is an LTE2, they don't hold themselves to a week
deadline, and are allowed to spend more time. Hell, if it was up to me, I'd
wait 6 months for a new LTE double CD! Any hopes MP!?!?!

Just quick question to anyone who loves LTE like I do. Did you just tingle
all over when you first popped that sucker in and got spanked with Paradigm
Shift???? I think that is the coolest song and they couldn't have started the
album off any better. It totally made a statement and I was so psyched to
listen to the rest after that.

    That's Explorer's Club
I had an idea to help this out in sales. I called Media Play and
asked if they were actually getting copieS of this Tuesday. They're
getting in ONE whopping copy. Woo hoo. Next door is Circuit City. I
called them with the same question-same answer, one copy.
How are they supposed to sell this thing if all they order is one
copy? This is the most frustrating thing about this music, they're
afraid to sell it. This does not bode well since I've turned on 5
people to LTE. These same folks want EC, since I've told them about
it based on their acceptance of LTE. This means I HAVE to be first so
I get MY copy :> Seriously though, who decides how many copies a
store gets, the store or the label. My guess is the store since MC
would want every store to get as many copies as they can hold. I hope
they get flooded with requests for this so they can see the errors of
their ways.. Any bets on how many Hansons they'll sell :<

Ryan it was a pleasure to see you again and swap stories!

Yeah!! I totally blanked out when it was my turn to get
my Fan Club '97 CD, Awake, and Falling Into Infinity
CD covers signed!!! But I was able to kiss his ass with
this statement... "Mike, I told you two years ago when
you were in Dallas last time for your drum clinic that
DT was my fave band, and you guys still are definitely
my fave band." Of course Mike being the class guy looked
directly at me and thanked me with much meaning. It was
a great clinic and a great night!!

LOL!!!! Ive always said that, in the part where JO sings something like "bla
bla do what you wanna do you know you shouldnt do it but you do it anyway" ( i
dont have the lyrics near me) it sounded like that spice girl tune. ( all of
    them? :)
Kind of like the bobby brown song on the chorus! :)

No, read my original post. I said I'd gladly fork over the money.

My problem with the money is if some of the clinics are free, that by
implication means that those that are charging are profiting from it.

And I'm sorry, but $10 is total bullshit if Portnoy is not getting a cut of
    that. Period.
