I was just wondering what DT songs the musicians on the Jam learnt
first. I started with YTSEJam, probably as it is one of my favourites,
and have just started to jam with PMU (which I think I should have
started with).
I haven't studied the songs note for note or used a tab but rather
jammed along with them, stopping to learn the bits that cause a
problem and just having fun.

Hi all
as promised, here are the reviews of the new albums by Alastis and
Sentenced, together with some of the random thoughts that occasionally
surface in the cesspit called my mind.
ALASTIS - Revenge
I was looking forward to this, and I was not disappointed. These guys have
once again proven that the black metal scene in Switzerland is not limited
to Samael. I can best describe this as atmospheric gothic black metal - none
of the ultrafast stuff that you would get from bands like Ulver or Dissection.
Wicked dark and heavy riffs form the canvas over which War D spreads his
seemingly monotonous, almost hypnotic vocals. Strong pulsating drums
drive the tracks along, and the melodic keyboards prevent everything from
dropping into complete darkness. Parallels to Samael are obvious, yet
Alastis are a little softer. Like their last album, this was also recorded at
the Woodhouse studios by Waldemar Sorychta (see also Sentenced,
Samael, The Gathering, Moonspell, Tiamat). My favourite track is possibly
the instrumental title track, which is a great finish for the album. 9/10
SENTENCED - Frozen
Another masterpiece from the Woodhouse studios with Mr. Sorychta once
again tweaking the knobs and Birgit Zacher helping out with the female
vocals. These guys from Finland have long left their death metal roots
behind them, and are now a very solid dark metal band. This is the second
album with Ville Laihaila singing, and it's in this department that the most
changes are apparent. His singing style has become more mature and
varied with a wider range. On the track "The Rain Comes Falling Down" he
even sounds a bit like Geoff Tate before effortlessly slipping back into his
normally gravely more aggressive style. Very listenable songs, nice solos
that fit, very dark lyrics (just like on "Down"), good riffs and hook lines - there
is nothing on this album that I would change. Nice touches of Amorphis,
Paradise Lost and Nefilim, together with occasional oriental-sounding
passages all help to make this album very enjoyable, definitely Sentenced
and almost danceable (and a great burp on track 4). 9/10
Lemur Voice - I would like to see the band sign with Century Media. They are
very good at picking up talented European bands and pushing them, also
putting them out on the road in packages. Anybody else think this?
Bass solos - why has nobody mentioned Chris Squire "The Fish" on
Yessongs? I've been listening to this track on and off for 25 years now and
it never ceases to amaze me.
The live CD - I hope there is no blue on the cover. I've just decorated my
bedroom, and any blue would simply clash with my new curtains. In fact,
I won't even buy it if there is any blue on it. But really, some people on this
list are just ungrateful - what, only a double CD? Why isn't my favourite
song on it? Why aren't there signed tee shirts to go with it? Are you
listening Portnoy? And why don't you give away cymbals at your drum
clinics? Jeez, I paid 5 fucking dollars to come and see you, after all.
How about refunding my petrol money?

Watch out for their first "Colour Temple" as well, which in some songs is
more straight forward, but there are killer tracks on that, too (Soul
Survives, great soloing, crazy!!)

There was a post made yesterday about a Radio show full of Prog. I LIKE this idea. As to how to go about it? I think we should get the Westwood One Radio network to do it. Does anyone know if they have an E-mail address or website? Innundate them with E-mail, phone calls, and letters (yes, i am suggesting using snail mail), and see if we can get them to produce a show. I think it could work.

Well, I think that this thread hasn't been discused latley or ever...
What is your criteria for good bass work? for drum work? what drummers and bassists you think are the most talented?
IMO, the best bass & drum work can be found @ Marillion CDs (esp. Fish-era ones).
(Bassist) Trewavas doesn't exaggerates like many players (like Sheehan and Hamm) - he plays really good parts. Don't get stuck on the base note and don't play too fast. Even in the most commercial song - Kayliegh - he has some real good parts.
(Drummer) Mosely has does some really cool things (like following the bass line on the hi-hat) and, too, don't overplay at all...
What is your idea for good drum & bass playing?

He does have a point. I love LTE for it's musical value, but if you pull your head out of your ass, you can tell the songs were written and recorded within a week. LTE is pretty much what I would call test tube songs. They just don't age well and lack that final polish that a nurtured and matured song possesses. The songs are great but given more time I think they could have been better. If the guys make a new one and spent say, a month, on it, I bet the songs themselves would be 10 times better.
Just my 200 Yen. --KorgX3 thinks Mike Portnoy might agree.

I have the $5 demo tape they had available...over a year ago, now. That was the first thing I noticed was the drummer stood out as being quite talented.
Is the band still together? I thought I remember seeing a post months back about them splitting.

I may be confused here. What do you mean by "musicianship"? Do you mean that their "compositional" skills are not displayed? Or their actual "performance" is lacking?
I thought that LTE was all about chops. They obviously didn't spend enough time to polish up any epic compositions, but the playing (performance) is all there. I'm not sure if I'm disagreeing with you or not...
