It would probably have to be classical/orchestral music.
Pop/rock/jazz/blues all basically equate to folk music and will be
forgotten. Think back to the popular music from 200 years ago. Any folk
musicians coming to mind? Just the classical stuff. In that sense prog
might have a chance. As I understand it, and I'm no history buff, most of
that stuff was done for a limited audience. Upper class, musically
knowledgeable type people. Just like us. Ha! As far as orchestral music
goes, one name comes to mind for me. John Williams. That guy is freakin
    amazing.

    Later,
    Joe

    << Dear MTV,

I am writing to inform you a little bit about a band you may or may not
have heard of, called Dream Theater.

Today a large militant activist group is planning on bombarding you with
email in a massive organized attempt to get you to play videos by this
band. This is a very dangerous, inflammatory extremist organization who
will literally stop at nothing to spread their "Prog Rock" dogma across the
     globe.

PLEASE DO NOT LISTEN TO THEM.

Right now you may be thinking, "Well, I don't see what's wrong with playing
a video by this band Dream Theater; I'm sure they have a nice grungy
radio-friendly style and a gritty, raw, brooding image that will appeal to
     our target demographics."

DO NOT ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE FOOLED.

There is a lot you do not know about this Dream Theater. They are not
normal. They refuse to play by the Rules of the Game which MTV has spent
     years carefully constructing.

I am pleading with you, on behalf of all of your loyal, glassy-eyed,
     empty-headed, Airwalk-wearing, flannel-clad, spoonfed MTV-watching sheep:
Do not give in to these prog rock thugs! They are a threat to our basic
ideas about music, culture, and our very way of life!

Think of the far-reaching ramifications if you decide to promote Dream
Theater. They actually have the nerve to play technically demanding music,
with poetic, thought-provoking, literary lyrics. Their songs are long,
sometimes even longer than "November Rain." What message will this send to
the Youth of Today? It will imply that, to become a famous rock band, one
must actually have talent, training, and an attention span! This goes
against our whole ethic! This is nothing less than blasphemy, and must be
     prevented.

YOU MUST NOT BE SWAYED FROM YOUR BUZZ-CLIP PROGRAM ROTATIONS.

Oh, I am now having nightmarish visions of John Senzio gaping brainlessly
into the camera as, in the voice of a frightened child, he stammeringly
attempts to introduce the latest "single" from this Dream Theater... and
once the song ends, twelve minutes later, he is reduced to a gibbering simp
curled up in the fetal position on the studio floor. Just think of the
lovely Jenny McCarthy; how would she react to this Dream Theater? Their
music would make her little pretty face implode under the crushing weight
of her own sheer incomprehension. Think about those wonderful, beautiful,
shapely, buff people on The Grind, as they stand there, blinking, looking
around frantically like hunted animals as their minds wrestle with the
     mathematics of dancing in 7/8 - 4/4 - 9/8 meters. I shudder to think.

The concept that these Dream Theater fans do not seem to grasp is that MTV
is not meant to appeal to us musically; otherwise why would so many popular
bands be so popular? People like me, who truly appreciate MTV for what it
is, *demand* to be manipulated. We must have our simple minds pumped full
of images that you select. We must have our sound bites and tag lines. We
must have our obtuse, casually scribbled lyrics and droning vocals, backed
by grungy guitars and a phat dance beat.

YOU MUST GIVE US WHAT WE WANT, AFTER YOU TELL US WHAT THAT IS.

You slipped up a few years ago, when you allowed this Dream Theater's "Pull
Me Under" to be played. This caused irreparable damage, resulting in vast
underground legions of Dream Theater fans to appear. Now they are amassing
their forces in an effort to overthrow us.

Society is not ready for this Dream Theater. They have the power to
destroy us. Yes, they are the anti-grunge, and we must not allow them into
the fort lest our ultimate plans of zombification of the masses for world
     domination slip from us forever.

YOU MUST BE STRONG AND RESIST THESE INVADERS.

Again, be forewarned of this group of "Ytsejammers". They will resort to
guerrilla tactics if provoked, especially during this time of year... many
of them are rather restless, as the season is approaching when their
leader, who goes by the name Bafu Vai, will return to their ranks. Do not
delay in refusing their efforts! When this leader rejoins them, there is
no telling what they might do.

DO NOT GIVE IN. WE ARE ALL DEPENDING ON YOU.

     Be afraid.

Best regards for a promising future,

     Scott Herman.

ps. Congratulations on your recent remaking of Metallica. We doubted it
could be done, but you have truly outdone yourselves in totally twisting
the integrity and power out of what used to be a sadly uncompromising band.

     pps. Same with Pearl Jam.

     ppps. More Alanis, please.

pppps. I would have written more, but "Singled Out" is on.

    >I have never checked him out. I do Like Mannheim Steamroller,
    >Andreas Vollenweider, and other "New Age" material.
    >I also like brass & string instruments. Oh, and orchestras rule!

hmmm... Well... Yanni has an interesting blend of msuic from around the
world. Much of his music has a middle eastern feel to it (similar to Marty
Friedman's solo efforts) and revolves around a general theme. His older
releases are basically just him recording everything with a keyboard and
Charlie Adams who added the drums, both acousticall and electronically.
While I wouldn't consider him prog, many of his songs are not in standard
4/4 time. His waltzes are almost always found in 7/8 or 9/8 time. His
latest album, "Tribute," is a live album taken from his performances at the
Taj Majal and the Forbidden City. The production is excellent and there is
absolutely no crowd noise (except for the intro to Niki Nana). The
musicianship is phenomenal. It's not just Yanni wanking off with a
keyboard, it's Yanni wanking off with 40 of the world's best musicians. In
fact, he's toned back on the participation with his ensemble and focused
more on composing, letting his band of Joel Taylor, Ming Freeman, Ramon
Stagnaro, Karen Black, Ric Fierabracci, Pedro Eustache, and others take the
    forefront.

I really think Yanni's "Tribute" album has something for every jammer.
Seeing it performed live is like living a dream. I don't even think Dream
Theater live could be as passionate, forceful, and perfect. For anyone who
has an ear for compositional music and a love for musical masterbation
    should pick up "Tribute."

If you like Yanni, pick up Yanni - Live at the Acropolis. Very much the
same as Tribute, only the focus is more on Yanni's playing rather than his
band. Still, it's one hell of a ride. Looking farther back after those,
I'd purchase Dare to Dream, Reflections of Passion, and In Celebration of
life, respectively. Most of the production on his albums is near perfect,
so don't be worried about that. :)

I'll make an MP3 tonight of Waltz in 7/8. I figure that'll be the best way
to introduce you all to his work. It's damn near impossible to find sound
clips of his stuff anywhere on the net. :\ I'll post the link tomorrow...

    Take care!

At first I felt kinda silly about asking prog fans about Russian pop, but
the song's too dang catchy and the video's too dang cute (I don't even
have the heart to cuss when describing this song).

It's Russian, and I do have the name (in Russian, not in the "English"
transliteration). The song's chorus (chuckle) goes something like:

BOOM bop boop bee do bah dap
BOOM BOOM bop bee bee do bah dap
BOOM bop boop bee do bah dap
BOOM... bah dap bap doo bah dap bow!

(lol ... yeah, it *is* ridiculous, but it has the same quality 99 Luft
Ballons has... and the video screams Information Society)

The video has one woman in black, some jugglers, etc, and another, cuter
(IMO) girl in a yellow and black skirt.

Okay, my plea to you. Can you cool Russian jammers swallow your disgust
(you have to be laughing at me hard by now) and tell me what the artist,
song and album is? I think I can take it from there, but I need a place
    to start.

    Thanks in advance,

..I don't think you need to apologize. Everyone on the jam probably knows
that GW is a sad excuse for a magazine these days. I have exactly the same
complaints as you. I just can't see why they make coverstories with bands
like Matchbox 20 and stuff like that. For a European like me this totally
makes the magazine worthless, since I've never heard these bands, and I
never will. Before they used to write about real musicians that were
well-known around the world, but now they focus on American one-hit
wonders. Why? "Well, it is an American magazine...", I hear you say. But
that's not the point. The point is: GUITAR WORLD IS SHIT!
There are still great guitarists around (not only JP). Why don't the
guitarmagazines write about them? Where are the stories about Michael
Romeo, Brendt Allman and Timo Tolkki? I don't give a fuck about these
    pathetic three-chord wonders. Yes, I'm narrow-minded. No, I don't care. If

He plays a very familiar piece that I love - but
I don't know the name of it.
Well, I can't help you out as far as a good recording of it -
except maybe on the Immortal Beloved Soundtrack itself, but I'm not sure
if they have the entire piece. The song is called The Moonlight Sonata,
and DAMN it is an awesome piece!!
There is also a cd called More Immortal Beloved which is more music
from the movie. Both cds are pretty good although they are mostly just
parts of longer pieces and some people don't like that.
Yanni suggestions: Live at the Acropolis-cool disc, even some odd
meter stuff. Great live recording. I would've gone to see him if tix
    weren't $70.
I saw John Tesh for $30 and he kicked buttocks.
Also if you like Bach and Beethoven on synths (ala Wendy/Walter

check out Don Dorsey's Bachbusters and Beethoven or Bust cds. I think
he might have a couple others.

Can any of the Italian jammers tell me how to get tickets for 13th June? I
live in the UK, so it's a bit difficult to find out. Thanks

For those of you who have DT web sites that need DT pictures, check out
the picture at www.scriba.org/stnews/pix/dt.jpg. You can add a link to
it, or take the picture itself, if you want to.

    Hi all

following the good news that Ginger Spice (or whatever her name is) has decided to quit the Spice Girls, you might like to take a look at the web address given below:

In fact, there are quite a few groups I would like to see this happen to.

    >There are kick ass melodies all over LTE. I guess >Mr. Lalaina must have skipped State of Grace!

And Paradigm Shift, The Stretch, Universal Mind, Freedom of Speech... The whole album has great melodies. That reviewer probably doesn´t even know what a melody is.
