    >>Now my problem is because I don't really have a clue as where to begin - I
continually buy Orchestral CDs with ho-hum compositions. I in particular like
the dark, somber music with angry parts, depressing parts, and beautiful
sections. In other words - the "voices" of orchestral music.

Anyone here (because I respect the opinions of those here) want to throw out
some recommendations? Please include the conductor and orchestra recording
you would suggest - as well as the composer and the composition name in
    particular>>

Awright, something big, orchestral, with those angry parts of which you speak
(and pardon me if anyone has recommended something that I am now repeating,
I'm a bit backlogged on 'jams) is the New World Symphony by Dvorak. Excellent
piece of music! Really grabs you. I heard it this year at college (my roomie
is somewhat of a classical music buff) and I love it. I also would recommend
anything Beethoven, just be careful, since he does a bit of piano and other
non-orchestral type stuff out there. Hope this helps you a tad.

    Greetings ye 'jamanoids...

Some more quick notes re: classical stuff:

Holst -- "The Planets". Many people have mentioned this but no specifics.
Dutoit with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra does an outstanding job.

Stravinsky -- "Rite of Spring"/Le sacre du printemps. Same goes. Inbal
with the Philharmonia Orchestra is a good choice.

Orff -- "Carmina Burana" (Stokowski, Houston Symphony Orchestra or
    Stokowski/Berlin Philharmonic)

KorgX3 redeemed himself for those remarks about Andre Matos with this:
    > Bah, pick up Yanni - Tribute. He's got a 40+ piece orchestra on it.
    > There's alot of solo standout stuff on there, too, but all in all, it's the
    > pinnacle of modern day compostitions, IMO.

The key word here's "modern day". This is new age stuff mixed with
powerful orchestral compositions -- and a lot of progressive leanings as
well. If you like "Tribute" you will probably also like "Live at the
    Acropolis", Yanni's first all-orchestral disc.

Yanni rulez. Oh, and Dream Theater's pretty good too.

    Phil

Not that it matters, but I personally think Steve Hogarth is one of the most brilliant singers around, in addition to being a great lyricist. He's the only male singer able to move me emotionally...

Oh yeah, there will be a US release of Steve Hogarth's solo album "Ice Cream Genius" at the end of July, which will have an extra track called "The Last Thing" (previously released on a single in Europe). The album will be re-released under Steve's full name, rather than just "H"... For more info, check out "The H Website" at :

I'm going to have to agree with Mark on this one. When I first heard H a few years back, I was floored. I'd heard some extremely incredible vocalists before. Ray Alder and Geoff Tate had always been influences on my vocals, but no one had done what H had. No one really had the voice, and the emotion behind the voice, that H does. H lives the words and voice he shares with all of us. It's amazing to hear someone pour their entire soul into a breath and make it sound as sweet as H does.

Kudos to Mark for stickin up for mah boy. =D

OK first of all John Petrucci is alot more than just so-called 80's Shred. If the reviewer had ever really listened to some of his playing with Dream Theater he'd know that.

    > Liquid Tension Experiment is another prefab supergroup. Assisting >Petrucci on this all-instrumental shred-fest is King Crimson bassist Tony >Levin, Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy and ex-Dixie Dregs keyboardist >Jordan Rudess, but unfortunately, there are few rousing melodies to speak of >- just self-indulgent, solo-mad forrays for the most part.

Few rousing melodies? I think "Somebody" wouldn't know a melody if it bit them in the #%$. There are kick ass melodies all over LTE. I guess Mr. Lalaina must have skipped State of Grace!

    >It's no surprise that this endeavor was written, rehearsed and recorded >during an intense one-week period; it sounds more like an overblown jam >session, with little inspiration or imagination, than a coherent album.

    >>jam session

Well no freakin" DUH. Obviously the reviewer has no concept of this type of music. So my question is why is he reviewing a type of music he doesn't know or like. It's fine to have a personal opinion, but this review goes way beyond that and yo can tell he doesn't get into this kind of music. You guys should really get reviewers who are more open minded and like stuff besides Green Day and Pearl Jam. There's way more to life than Alterna-grunge.

    >If Liquid Tension Experiment ever makes another album, they should take >more than a week out of their lives to do it. > - Joe Lalaina.

All I can say is I hope they do more, no matter how much time they take. You can also send me Mr. Lalaina's copy and I will give it an open honest review.

    Thanks for listening,

    Ed Voras

    Hello everyone,

For all of you King Crimson/Spice Girls fans out there, this just came over the AP entertainment wire here at work:

    GINGER SPICE LEAVES SPICE GIRLS

LONDON -- Gerry Halliwell, known throughout the world as Ginger Spice from the mega-popular all-girl group, the Spice Girls, has left the platinum-selling group in order to pursue her lifelong dream of performing with her idol, guitarist Robert Fripp, who is most known for being the founder of the art- rock group King Crimson. Ginger will go on a world tour with Fripp and fellow King Crimson members, Tony Levin (bass) and Bill Bruford (drums), in aband called ProjecKt 3. There have already been two ProjecKts featuring members of King Crimson. This will be the first ProjecKt that has featured a non-Crimson musician.

"When I heard that Robby said that Scary Spice was his favorite Spice Girl," said Halliwell, "I was so happy that he even knew who we were. I bumped into Robby on the metro one night and begged him to allow me to play with him in a band."

"What can I say," said Fripp. "I've wanted to work with Ginger since I saw her in that magazine spread years ago. What a set of.... pipes!"

Levin was unavailable for comment, as he was on the set of his new movie, "The G. Gordon Liddy Story." Bruford released this short comment: "At least she's better than that no-talented Tony Kaye (former keyboardist with Yes)!"

    Take care, Adam Perkowsky

P.S.-- THE PRECEDING WAS A JOKE, although the Tony Kaye comments are probably true! : )

Finally someone mentions Berlioz. The Fantastic Symphony is a must for anyone enjoying the darker side of classical, especially movement 5. This piece was written under the influence of opium, and I think it's pretty obvious. My band used to use this as intro music, when not using the overture from Jesus Christ Superstar.

since the music industry has seemed to be spending all its time filling the shoes and ears or our current top 40 'kibbles and bits'-style craving for music with people who we, for the most part, could have birthed, it's come to my attention that the music industry people are thinking that it may be a good time to get 'back to the roots' of music. it's time to bring back the bacon.

What in the hell is wrong with being self-indulgent? If a player has a style he likes and I happen to like also, as is evidently the case with JP and MP and the others in LTE, then I goddamn jolly well WANT them to be self-indulgent. What’s the alternative, “mob-indulgent?” Seems to me a great artist should screw the Great Wad and be true to his or her own vision. I can’t think of anything more self-indulgent--or more admirable.

The preceding was inspired by the Guitar World drone and his countless brethren of review-writing hacks who seem intent on dissing great musicians for the very qualities that make them great.

    Greetings ye 'jamanoids...

Back home now with a few more classical recommendations:

J.S. Bach -- Concerti (2) for Violin; Concerto for 2 Violins (try Hogwood, Academy of Ancient Music)

Handel -- Concerti Grossi (usually available in 3-CD sets -- try Turovsky, I Musici de Montreal)

Mozart -- Violin Concerto 3, 5 (Perlman, Vienna Philharmonic) -- "The Magic Flute"/Die Zauberflote (Solti, Vienna Philharmonic and Chorus) -- Serenade in G "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" (Hogwood, Academy of Ancient Music -- usually you can find this with other Mozart serenades like the 9th "Notturno" serenade) -- Symphonies 25, 28, 29 (Mackerras, Prague Chamber Orchestra) -- Symphonies 35-36, 38-41 (Walter, Columbia Symphony Orchestra)

Mendelssohn -- Symphonies 3, 4 (Abbado, London Symphony Orchestra)

Mussorgsky -- "Night on Bald Mountain" (Maazel, Cleveland Orchestra -- this one also includes the "Pictures at an Exhibition")

Many of these, even if not dark and disturbing per se, are powerful enough to move you in *some* way.

    Hope this has helped some.
