I saw the mag several weeks back at a shop here in town and read the MP interview. The front said "FREE CD INSIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!", which I found quite hilarious seeing how the cover price was $10. Free CD alright. About the Chris and Kevin thing, those are the names a photographer mistakenly kept calling Mike and Tony during a shoot (if I remember correctly) and therefore that's what they named their duet together.

it's my fav of theirs, and probably one of my top25 of all-time... maybe.

really chunky, really tight. goofy, intellectual, all over the place, odd instruments, barnyard animals...i mean, it's got it all.

i'd say my fav song on it is "still life of peace" (track #32)... wholly cow!!

other Galactic Cowboys CDs worth checking out: all of them... their self-titled is more like SIYF, machine fish and the horse that bud bought are more of a modern rock/metal fusing. not as polished, but still brilliant writing, if you ask me.

Let me expand on what Chris said. First, if you want to talk keyboards, look at the following newsgroup: rec.music.makers.synth. There are hundreds of mailing lists about keyboards. Bear in mind that these mostly deal with techno and never discuss anything but computer sequencers, samplers and the like, but occassionally, amidst the for sale ads, you will get something. Now, onto the real deal. If you deal with how many keys on a keyboard you want, bear in mind that 88 key keyboards are always weighted, and 61 key boards are never weighted. 76 key keyboards may or may not be weighted. The ensoniq ts12 mr76 and zr76 are weighted, but the xp80 and ex5 from roland and yamaha are not. The qs7 is not. There. Now, for a sampler, I would go with akai or emu. Akai seems to be the second warrior in the battle. I would avoid Ensoniq, since they haven't donme much with sampling lately, Yamaha has hardly beaten down the sampler door unless you examine the a3000. Kurzweil k2500 and others are very expensive, and I don't know much of Roland, I would assume they are good. Amps? Roland m,akes good amps. PV kb300 is great. But, I have a Audiocitron 8 channel mixer with jbl tR series speakers and that is the shit. Bear in mind, I got lucky with used gear. Now, onto the Yamaha ex5. i am getting one. Passed up a trinity to get one. Why? Built in sampler. More control possibilities, a ribbon like the trinity, two mod wheels, pitch bend, six assignable control knobs, and two buttons above the mod wheel that alter the sound. 16 track sequencer, 128 note polyphony, 8 track pattern recorder, to record loops, and 4 track arpeggiator. If you don't know what an arpeggiator does, listen to Vital Signs from Rush. Nobody can play that alone. Also, the ex5 has more sounds than the trinity, does physical modeling and analog synth stuff without an extra prophecy board, and I think it sound better than the Trinity, well maybe different but they sound ... I don'tknow, i like the Yamaha sounds better than the trinity. But I like the Trinity for its purposes, too. PLan to own both. I have played with the xp series from Roland, and I am getting rid of my xp50. It is a great keyboard, especially for prog stuff, but I like the x5 for prog better. It is an old synth engine that needs some updating, IMHO. Ensoniq has bored me since the KT series came out. If you want an ensoniq, get the sd1 or the ts10. But bear in mind, these boards are out of date and finding so8unds for them is a bitch. Alesis? never cared for its synthy sounds. Some of them are really great, but most are crap. If you like Keith Emerson, you have the perfect Lucky man synth sound in there, but that's about it. HMMMM. If you want the jp8000 or nord lead, remember these are geared more towards techno. I have played with both of these and they just don't do much for anything but techno. A shame, really. The prophecy and z1 are the same. And the vk7 sounds OK, but don't run it through your keyboard amp and expect a hammond b3. Ge5t a leslie cabinet. Controllers? HMMMMMM. Most keyboards today come in rack form, the xp series has the jv racks, the trinity ahs a tr rack, the ex5 has an ex rack. Samplers come mostly in racks these days. Kurzweil has the k2500r. The mess goes on. Then you have things like groove boxes that are racks and such. For controllers, go with Roland. I think they are the best. And as far as joysticks vs pb and mod wheels, it is a matter of taste. I hate joysticks for organ sounds since you can't keep the leslie simulation going for two handed chords if you have to hold the joystick up. Yeah, you can reassign that, but still. I wish I had both. Ultimately, i am going back to mod wheels. Agai, it is a matter of taste. I still think, with a little experimentation, you can do anything on any keyboard, pb wheel or joystick. Just experiment. Don't be afraid to go out of control. And anybody who gets a ribbon controller will not want to part with it, trust me on this.

Rocky. I thought the qs7 was semiweighted. And as far as the qs7 drums, I think they sound too machinish. I guess I am looking for real drums no matter what, but my ex5, and even the trinity sound more real to me than the qs7. AS for the Korg n364, I have a hard time believing that you get real synth sounds from it. I don't know, I guess I am being picky. The alesis acoustic sounds, minus its piano, don't do anything for me. The piano in the alesis is great. Both keyboards organs are rough for me. I don't know. I fyou like it and it works for you, then great. I guess I am pickier in this area.

Liquid Tension Experiment (Magna Carta)

]From the opening of lead-off track "Paradigm Shift", where Mike Portnoy and guitarist John Petrucci unleash a unison line of 16th notes in groups of threes, played as fast as humanly possible, you get the feeling that these gentlemen have been anxiously waiting to express themselves in a more open forum than Dream Theater has recently allowed. This project is similar to the Black Light Syndrome album, which featured Terry Bozzio, in that the same record label (Magna Carta) approached Portnoy to create a "wish list" of players that he would like to experiment with musically. (King Crimson bassist Tony Levin, a contributor to Black Light Syndrome, appears here as well, as does keyboardist Jordan Rudess, fresh off his collaboration with Rod Morgenstein.)

Although this is not simply a thrash session, Portnoy is relentless throughout. "Freedom Of Speech" allows Mike to stretch a bit, while "Chris And Kevin's Excellent Adventure" gives us an opportunity to hear him play real out and funky, displaying some serious over-bar-line chops. The impressive set ends with "Three Minute Warning," an insane twenty-eight-minute, totally improvised jam that shows just how creative "educated rockers" can get. Portnoy has safely secured his place in progressive rock drumming history with this recording.

I can second that. They called the track simply "Moonlight" and it contains the highest pitched note Andre Matos ever sung (at least last I checked). After hearing the vocal melody he put on top of that song, I can't help sing it every time I hear Moonlight Sonata!!

There's a funny story behind that song... the version on the CD was totally arranged by Andre Matos pretty much without the help of the rest of the band, and featured his then girlfriend on cello if I'm not mistaken. So once Andre Matos left Viper and started Angra, that was the only song he played from his Viper days because he and the Viper guys are not friends at ALL and he wouldn't do a song even partially written by them. Still, when he did that, the guys from Viper said in an interview that "of course Viper is much better of without Matos. We're a better band. Proof is that Matos plays our songs in his shows while we don't have to play any Angra songs cuz they suck". Then Andre stopped playing the song which is a shame cuz it rocks so much...

The bottom line though is, Viper without Matos sucks so bad they're back at playing little bars in Sao Paulo doing covers. Every album they released after Matos (there's been 3 of them) has been consistently worse than the previous one - the first was heavy with bad vocals, the second turned punk (???) and the third sounded like a bad version of The Smiths (??????????)...

So if you're gonna get any Viper, make sure it has Andre Matos on it (only Soldiers of Sunrise and Theatre of Fate do, by the way).

Oh, and DT rocks ;)

Well, I had to check into this whole "Synphony Fantastique" a little after Jon e-mailed me offlist with some quotes from a musical text of his. After checking into the subject a bit further, I have the following to report:

There doesn't seem to be a lot of evidence that the piece was, in fact, the result of the opium dream detailed in the text that Berlioz produced to go with the symphony. It IS often interpreted as such because it is autobiographic in nature (the piece is often used to teach autobiography in art). I did, in looking through my initial message, make one really egregious mistake (that's what you get for turning off your brain when in e-mail, I guess)...the March to the Scaffold, is, of course, a march made by Berlioz himself, for the murder of his beloved. Which is actually a little more gruesome, still. But I didn't have the deaths in the right order in my last post on the subject.

That having been said, Berlioz has been described as a manic depressive...he, after all, wanted to assume the mantle of the Master of Romantic music that Beethoven once held (even though Beethoven is really a bridge from the Classical to the Romantic [in fact, some of his chamber pieces sound downright modern]). And there isn't any evidence that denies his drug use, either. In fact, in the Burkat Program Notes (http://www.culturefinder.com/burkat/bios/berlioz.htm), his addiction to Laudanum towards the end of his life is described as leaving him in "a drug-addicted shell." Which doesn't mean that the opium dream of "Symphony Fantastique" is to be taken literally...but leaves a little ambiguity, at the very least.

I came across an interesting add in the classifieds of a southern california music magazine. BAM (which started in the bay area) with SLAYER on the cover has an add. I was very suprised to see it.

DREAM THEATER KEYBOARDIST Derek Sherinian is accepting guitar and keyboard students for June and July.

It gives a phone number and email address. Say, isn't the band suppossed to be touring then??

Also: -please give me some reviews of SENTENCED's album 'Down' -has anyone seen or heard new SEBASTIAN BACH stuff? he is playing really close so I might check it out -Where can I find MAIDEN tour dates! They have already started to play in the US!!! -Apparently HELLOWEEN will tour the US this summer!
