My first bass was pretty much disposable -- I knew it, the store knew it,
everybody knew it. My choice was to get a cheap Series 10 (I think, but
am not sure) bass and a decent 25 watt amp. I think it was a good choice.
If you haven't played bass before, I don't think it much matters what you
get as far as a bass goes as long as it has 4 strings and stays in tune
for a decent amout of time ^_^
A good amp can make up for a lot of shitt basses. I still like my Crate
BX-25. It's small, and just loud enough to rumble a little. It works
okay for simple studio work, and kick for practice. Since you're just
beginning, you prolly won't have to worry about playing live anytime
soon...
I'm not a tech head, and don't really care to be. Play the basses for
$200 or below, and if it sounds good, it's probably the amp. MAKE SURE to
play on the amp you plan to buy, and not the awesome 160-watt amp they
will try to hook you up to. But you prolly knew that already.

Yes, yes, yes, yes and yes. I was self-taught from tab books and
listening to songs I liked. The first song I learned all the way thru was
For Whom The Bell Tolls. Easy for the most part, with some cool melody.
If you can play by ear, you should be fine.

The Spock's Beard mailing list is on a little crusade to get "June" in
the top 100 (or as high as we can get it), on a German radio poll...
and we're doing pretty good, last time I checked June was at #88!
Here's where you guys come in... let's get Dream Theater in the top
100 as well! It will work out the best if we all vote for the same
song... right now Hollow Years is at #356.
Chris Sigrist, from the Thoughts mailing list, has set up a page
(in English) explaining the poll:
http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Trails/8884/spocksbeard/SBe.html
If you understand German, or just hate reading instructions, you can
go directly to the poll here:
http://www.swr3.de/cgi-bin/abstimmung/abstimm.cgi
Basically, there are two lines fill out... "Titel" = "Song", and
"Interpret" = "Band"... then scroll to the bottom and click on
"Abschicken" (no need to enter your email address or other info).
SWR3 has embedded an IP-Address-Check, so you cannot vote again until
25 other people did... so it's pretty safe to vote once a day, and if
you have access to more than one computer you can vote from each one.
(Or if you have a dial-up connection to the internet: disconnect and
reconnect, so you can vote again immediately)
Now here's where the Spock's Beard fans are asking you for a favor...
You are allowed to vote for three different songs, and since the
information about this poll came from someone on the SB mailing list,
would you all please vote for "June" by Spock's Beard as your second
choice? We'd all appreciate it very much.
The poll is running through August.
You can listen to SWF3 on the internet:
http://www.swf3.de/webradio/
On the very top of the page you will see:
"Webradio einschalten: >>SWF3"
Click on SWF3 (RealPlayer/RealAudio required).

Nobody bitched yet. :) Of course guitarists are cooler people,
and just like to learn about all the neat keyboard gear for the hell of
it. :) Actually, I had a key question: At about what price range do
boards start coming with sequencers? And what are the best deals (quality
of sound versus price) on new rack modules? I have a Roland PC 200
controller (don't laugh... it's the perfect controller for my purposes)
because I want to do a bunch of key layers and stuff on my PC when I get
into some serious hard disc recording (all I need now is a big scsi hard
drive and a decent cab emulator) but I have found that I can not be
satisfied with Creative Labs sounds (okay, NOW you can laugh). I almost
got an Alesis Quadrasynth, and then almost got a Korg N something, but you
guys know much more than I do about this stuff.

The best advice on buying ANY musical instrument that you're
unfamiliar with is still to take a friend or aquaintance who knows how to
play along with you when you hit the stores. It's just not likely that
you're going to be able to spot defects or problems even if we tell you
where to look. What advice can I give.... make sure the neck is playable
at all frets (meaning that the strings are not like a mile off the neck at
the 12th fret, and a milimeter off the neck at the 1st fret)... hit a note
on each fret and listen for string buzz. Test the bass through a decent
amp, and compare it to an expensive bass (a SIMILAR expensive bass...
don't test a P Bass against a Zon Hyperbass or a Modulus 6 string
fretless). At $100 just take whatever amp you can get. :) Look for used
gear and you'll get a better bass and amp.

Therein lies one of the ways in which a keyboard is much easier
than a guitar. You can hit the exact same note, in the exact same octave
in several different places on a guitar. Then again, there are a few ways
in which a guitar is easier than a keyboard (here comes Damon... let me
have it!)
> Do you think I could get by with an instructional book or two, until I

Of course. Just try and apply your music knowledge to the bass...
don't relearn things for a fretboard. Approach it like a bass, but dig
into the same pool of theory... a mode is the same thing on a keyboard, a
banjo, and a bass. Learn and memorize the names of the open strings, and
the dotted frets, and then just work on technique. I'd say pick up a
couple instructional videos as well as the books... you'd probably be at
an ideal stage to get Myung's video. Just approach the technique and the
style as a bass, and not a keyboard, and approach the application of ideas
as music, seperate from whatever instrument you're on.
Do yourself a favor: Don't Pick! Use 2 or 3 fingers, and
alternate (don't rake the strings, or rely on one finger for the slow
stuff).

heheh. I started playing bass on a black Harmony bass guitar with dangly
bobber strings flopping around unclipped from the headstock, a missing tone
knob, and two pickups that looked something like plates drilled into the
head of a guy that got maimed by shrapnel back in Vietnam, What's more, I
really loved that bass. Played it through my reliable old Rock Town amp
that probably only pulled 15 Watts. Never take gear so hokey to a gig. I
warn you. :P
So, in answer to you're question, start cheap. Maybe get something that'll
be a little more presentable and have better tone likst a used soundgear or
something. I bought a used Washburn XS-6 a few years back and it's still
the sweetest, fullest 4-string bass I've ever played. Then get a nice Crate
BX-160 amp and you got da thumps, bro'. Strings are easy to replace. I
took electronics for 3 years in high school, but I'd still take it to a
dealer to get the pickups and pots replaced. I dunno about where you go,
but the dealer I go to replaces the pickups free when you buy them from him.
Then after you get famous playing for a new grunge band likst Jeff Ament
did, go treat yourself to a new Tobias or Yamaha bass and a nice shiny
Hartke bass cabinet. :)

OK, I think you can get a ekeyboard with sequencer for $1300 nowadays. For
lower prices, look for used gear. Try rec.music.makers.synth or
rec.music.makers.marketplace. So, maybe others have better answers. I have
only dealt with workstations which are very expensive. Look into the qs6
or the Korg n5 or something like that.

Virtuoso, is that someone who can play many different styles of music? One who can play many many different techniques on a single instrument so that their style fits no style? One who can play many different instruments and play them all well? I would replace the term "virtuoso" in reference to the Romantic era with "the age of the single-instrument specialist."

The Yamaha DTX is really quite cool, I've had one for about a year, I don't record with it, I manly just practise on it, and it still feels good to get back to an acoustic kit. After playing the DTX an acoustic kit appears really big, which can be a bit of a shock. I find the Hi-Hat pedal to be a bit noisy, it seems to rattle a lot, and if you want to play double bass you need to buy another bass drum trigger post which uses up a trigger input, not a bad thing in the whole as you don't have to assign a bass drum sound to your other foot its quite fancy to play a ride or cow bell line with your left foot. What does get at me is that the LCD panel is not back lit. Has anyone here tried this Internet jam thingy ?? As for a dream set-up I love the look of Andy Ganagdeen's set-up, but it all depends on who has to set it up !! I wonder how long it takes MP's drum tech to set-up his kit? David C
