You know, to respnd to this, (and you knew I would), first I want to say
that before anybody bitches about off topicness,we had to read through
guitar pickups, equipment, and picking techniques, and now it is the
keyboardists turn. First, to Chris, definitely look at the ex5 or ex5r.
The ex7 is cut in half, some features were lost to lower the price. half
the polyphony, no scsi, and some other shit I don't remember. Now, with
this in mind, here we go. My keyboard situation, the Yamaha ex5, which I
will have soon. The ex5 would serve as my controller, and master keyboard.
Racked to the ex5, through midi, would be the TR rack, and the jv2080 with
all the boards I already have. Above the ex5, I think I would go with the
Hammond xb3 or Roland VK7, but definitely hooked up to leslies. Placed
strategically to the right, would be an Oberheim obxa, above which would
be a minimoog. I don't need no jp8000, I will just get the real thing. I
would also love a set of Taurus pedals, just like Geddy Lee's. There, now
I got everything I could possibly want.

Scalloped frets just have a weird feel to em. I played on Christian's (AKA KillMary) Les-Clone (Sweet axe!) with a scalloped fretboard, and while I hated it at first, later that day I was really digging it. It's not as easy as you think to accidentally bend out of tune, if you have good technique to start with. What it does, is teach you to use the right amount of pressure, and allows you to bend much more easily than you normally would. You don't feel the wood under your fingertips... it's really like you're trying to push a wire through 2 poles. Very interesting. I think that it would be ideal for 8 finger stuff, because it's a really "easy" feeling on the fingers... like you barely need to touch the strings to get the sound you want.

Prognosis will be updated someday. I ditched the prog site part because I couldn't get around to updating it, and because I like too much non-prog. The guitar site is actually much more tedious because of all the screen shots. I have a million ideas to put up there, but I am so bored with punching in all the html.... I will get back on it really soon... but it's gonna take a day or two of real freetime, which I do not have an abundance of right now. I'll announce something when I've added some significant content.

    Go Home and Practice!

Here's my take on the k2500. If you are into learning curves and programming, go for the k2500. I tried one out and the sounds left me cold. I guess if you like programming. Rudess makes that thing sound great, but I can't do much with programming due to vission problems and reading those screens, which is why I will not buy a trinity, (stupid touch screen). However, if you are into sampling, go with the akai sampler. Most definitely. Or emu. Kurzweil is good, too, but don't dump the $4500 on the k2500, try to get the k2500r rack. Only mgyh opinion. As for hammond b3 and melotron sounds, you cold do just as well with a xp80 and the keybords of the 60s and 70s expansion boards which does hammonds, combo organs like farfizas, fender rhodes, wurlies, clavs, melotrons and more. The vintage synth boards takes care of most analog needs. The two must-have boards for prog. And it is much elss expensive. And they sound authentic enough. Or go for the yamaha ex5 and get the akai CDs, (the ex5 can read akai, but only the raw samples), and program the melotron based on what you think it should sound like.

Yeah, but does your Roland controller have a ribbon controller? Yeah, maybe the ex5 doesn't cut it very nicely with organs, but it works for me. And I think Derek has always used Leslies. When I spoke to him during an interview for my college radio show, he said that all keyboards should have an organ sound with leslies. He says he doesn't know how a keyboard player can work withoutit. I am paraphrasing, of course. But, I totaly agree with him. I did play the vk7 through a mono keyboard amp. I bet if I ran it in stereo through my rig, I would be much more impressed.

There are musicians and there are keyboardists. Musicians just play and don't tgive a shit what they are playing. They are concerned with the notes only and if it is a grand piano, a Korg trinity pro/x or a detuned upright in the garage, they don't care. Keyboardists, like myself and others on this list, lust after the latest shit. We dream about it. We fantasize about it. We go to the store and play everything, studying its variations, critically listen to each timbre and reject or obsess over each model. For months, I dreamt about a Trinity, then the yamaha ex5 came out and I traded in my past lust object, my xp50, for it. We will painstakingly craft our sounds. Yes, some of us care about the notes. I am a keyboardist, but I love prog, which means that I care about what I play and can play quite well, but I love the sound of keyboards. Van Halen's Jump, which still has the greatest keyboard sound of all time, made me fall in love with the synth. Tom Sawyer cemented that love for me. I just love keyboards. The sound they make is so diverse. And lately, they are just getting so good again. I still want my oberheim obxa, though. I am not knocking the musician of the crowd. As long as the person has talent, and can play his ass of I respect them. Us keyboardists just think of more things than notes. Guitarists and bassists can be this way too. Look at how manyof you lust after mesas and fenders and such. Case closed. No bashing no flaming, just making an observation. The only flaming I would do here is if you own pro gear and play Green Day covers. Then you nee to be shot.

This discount is ONLY available if you go to CDnow through a so called "Cosmic URL". You can find "Cosmic URLs" on "Under A Cyber Moon" in the left frame of the frames version or the CDnow links on UACM's links page... So if you haven't bought "LTE" yet... ;-)

Not only will YOU get a $10 discount, they'll give ME 5 % in CDnow credit over the amount of money you spend (*including* that $10). Cool deal all around. :-)

If you have your own site you might want to consider joining CDnow's Cosmic Credit program too... It's pretty cool. There are lots of other online record stores with credit programs, like Music Boulevard and CD Universe, btw.

    Later!

I think this is in the FAQ. I just don't know the address. heheh. It's not really coincidence since it was painted that way. heheh. Look at the Images and Words cover and you'll see

A sparrow falling - "Watch a sparrow falling..." -Pull Me Under

    A bed -Wait for Sleep

A Moon -Under a Glass Moon

A Cold Metal Frame (Held by the girl) -Wait for Sleep

A sexy little girl in a skimpy nightgown -Kiddie Porn (a song that didn't make the album)

An invisible man Lurking in the shadows with a butterknife and fistful or iodized salt. -Some random image, not part of the album.

Then there's that red "thing" on the back of the FII cover. :P --KorgX3

That is mostly true. What happened was the clergy wanted him to continue writing the same kind of music that had always been played in church. This did not sit well with Bach and he continued writing and playing his own thing. The clergy were enraged that their traditional/popular music was not being played or written so they put Bach under a psuedo house arrest thing. The King who liked Bach heard about this and ordered that Bach be set free.

Just think, Bach might not be as well loved today or remembered had he not given in to what was popular at the time. Look at all these pathetic bands that do everything "Big Daddy" ,aka eMpTyV, tells them to do. Will anyone remember any of these bands in 20 years? I truly doubt it.

Part of the reason I respect DT so much is that the music industry does not support progressive music yet DT continues with what they love.

I guess the whole moral of this is, do what is in your heart and you can't go wrong err........unless of course your Charles Manson or something :)

Okay, here's a dumb newbie question from somebody who's looking to get himself a pretty decent all-around keyboard soon. Well, a series of questions. I've already gotten some answers from KorgX3 and subtlerage (thanks, guys) but I need to know a few more:

    Where do I start?

What's a controller? a rack mount? what's the difference between a Trinity rackmount and a plain old Trinity? (not that anything about the Trinity could be called "plain old", that is).

I want a single keyboard with versatility, a decent sequencer, good sounds, and some decent analog sounds (read: mid-80's synth sounds). What am I looking for? I'm confused. You high-tech keyboard people have lost me. :)

Jerry Cantrell is going to play a show in Tucson next tuesday. Chris DeGarmo will be part of the backup band, as will the drummer from AiC and someone else whom I forget.

I see Fish and H era Marillion as almost different bands, but I love them both. They just need/evoke different moods. _brave_ is a masterpiece, as is _Afraid of Sunlight_. But then again, I'd say the same about _Misplaced Childhood_ and _Clutching at Straws_. And the lyrics on _Fugazi_... I need to stop now.

Tori Amos is another amazing artist. My fav probably would be _Under The Pink_, although there isn't a dud in the set. She has lots of b-sides and album tracks, which I haven't heard most of, but the albums are all great. I think I'd wait a bit on _Boys for Pele_ though, it's great, and has some great songs, but I think it takes a bit more to get into.

DTC - When I get home, I'm going to listen to LitS to see if I see the Ming the Mercilous bit.

OK, firstly. A controller traditionally is a keyboard with no sounds in it. However, some controllers come with basic sounds like a piano. A controller is used to drive rack mounted synths. More on that in a minute. Let me just say that any keyboard with a midi connection can be used as a controller, but some are better suited for that purpose than others. A rack mounted synth has the guts of a keyboard, but doesn't have the keys or sometimes sequencer. It is meant to be driven by a controller. You can control several racks with one controller. For what your are looking for, a controller is not what you want. First question, how much do you have to spend? This is a heavy factor in your purchase. The Korg Trinity fits what you want. The differences between the rack trinity and the korg trinity keyboard is that the trinity keyboard is the keyboard with the sequencer keys, all the sliders joysticks and such. It is a self contained unit. The rack is just a box with some front panel controls and the sounds of the trinity. You would need a keyboard controller to access those sounds. If you want a good all around keyboard, look into the Korg Trinity or the Yamah ex5. If your budget is not as great as these keyboards demand for purchase, try something like th eAlesis qs7, or the Korg N series. Ensoniq puts out some nice stuff too. You can also go for the Roland xp560. Basically, you need to go to your local music store and try shit for yourself and see what sounds good for you.

Continuing the spirit of the keyboard thread...

I play piano/keyboards but I'm interested in buying a used bass guitar (and amp) over the next month or so. I'm looking to spend a very modest amount... maybe $300 or so. It looks like I'm able to get a decent used bass for about $200, and an amp for $100. But I don't really know much about what I'm looking for. What should I be looking for there? If I'm just a beginner, should I be very concerned with the manufacturer's rep? What else should I look for? If the strings or pick-ups are poor, it's fairly easy to replace them, right?

Also, will I be able to learn how to play on my own? I play piano, I can read music, and I know a bit about theory. But fingering on a guitar is a LOT different than on a piano, and I'm not sure I could ever figure out where to put my fingers (being in the right spot to play the NEXT note)! Do you think I could get by with an instructional book or two, until I develop a feel for it; or will I need more than that? Will tab help learning the basics of fingering?

I'm sure you all know far more about this than I do. Thanks for your help.
