I have this CD which I will sell for $5 to anyone who wants it. I have only listened to it once. I am also willing to sell Fates Warning No Exit and Enchant Blueprint of the World for the same price. I'll even sell all 3 for $10 just to get rid of them!

Then you'll love the A-90 or A-70 master controllers from Roland. They do have both. :)

    >And the vk7 sounds OK, >but don't run it through your keyboard amp and expect a hammond b3.=20

No, but it's closer to a Hammond than anything except a Hammond. I.e. better than any other emulation. You'll pay, too, $2000 for the VK-7. Pricey, but worth it, IMO, if you want that sound. And, since it has buttons for leslie on/off and fast/slow, you won't have to worry about joysticks or wheels. :)

I forgot something: The Trinity (or at least the TR-Rack) usually has as its default for the leslie emulator, to have the joystick up toggle the leslie speed. So, press up once, it's fast. Press up again, it's slow. So you don't have to keep pressing the joystick to get the leslie. THat works really well, and the Trinity Leslie emulator is not bad. It's actually an effect you can apply, rather than being sampled into the sound.

This means: 1) you can add leslie to anything, like piano, gutar, etc. 2) you don't have that really annoying samplict artifact where the leslie speeds up the higher the note you play, and your leslie warbles are all out of sync when you play multiple notes. That's really bad to listen to once you've heard a better emulation.

What about that hammond xb3 or whatever it was that derek used up until recently? I would think hammond does b3 better than anybody else, wouldn't you? No matter what organ simulator you buy, try to get a leslie cabinet. Otherwise, you cheapen the sound. In my new yamaha ex5, the organ sounds has balls and everything. The leslie simulation is OK, and you can overdrive the sound for that distorted organ grime, but without a leslie, it just lacks something. By the way, the midi controller is great and all, but I don't need one. The ex5 would make an outstanding controller, the only exception being the lack of midi ports. It has the standard in out and thru. But it has enough controllers on board to choke Keith Emerson with. :)

Yes, the trinity does do the leslie thing nice with the joystick. The keyboard Ihave played with, especially the high end workstations, all have leslie effects. The xp50 and series has it. The Ensoniq keyboards have it. The yamaha has it. It is usually low end keyboards that blow at leslie effects.

world, who do > you think people will be considering the classics in another 200 years? > Anyone from our time period you could think of?

Well it's hard to say, since in 200 years music will probably seen in a very different way, and people will look back and consider geniuses those who seemed to be ahead of their time...and chances are most of the people who are ahead of their time are also virtually ignored in their time:)

I definitely think Zappa's in there...I also think Glenn Branca is a genius of our time, even though virtually noone knows of his existence.

Then there's the possibility that rock will become 'art music', like jazz did. In that case, I'm sure guys like Hendrix will be considered classics.

AS for the Korg n364, I have a hard time believing that you get real synth sounds from it. I don't know, I guess I am being picky. The alesis acoustic sounds, minus its piano, don't do anything for me. The piano in the alesis is great. Both keyboards organs are rough for me. I don't know. I fyou like it and it works for you, then great. I guess I am pickier in this area. >>

well, the qs7's built in drum sounds are a little machinish, but i made my own kit, tuned the drums how i wanted them, and messed around with them a lot, and they sound awesome. i have played a trinity, and the N364 doesnt come close to the trinity's synth sounds, but it is WAY better than my qs7's. what trinity do you have? and how much did you pay for it? i was thinking about getting one but i settled for the n364 instead. i hear the z1 is awesome too, you know how much it goes for off hand?

Antal Dorati does a pretty good job with everything. My particular favorite featuring him at the helm is Ottorino Respighi's "Ancient Dances & Airs For Lute." If you see his name listed in the credits as a head honcho, it's probably good stuff. Christopher Hogwood is on the same level of excellence (Christopher Hogwood & The Academy of Ancient Music). > > Also, I was always wondering who composed that music that you would typically > > here played during "mad scientist scenes" or "Frankenstein scenes" in movies. > > Does anyone know who i am taling about?? One of the more widely-recognized pieces of > classical music ever (with good reason).

This piece was used for "Phantom of the Opera," and a few others, but eerie organ music was once a very popular music form used in horror movies. I'm sure dozens of different pieces were written during that period of black and white silent films, and stuck around when voices entered the movies. And of course classical pieces (Tocatta) were used as well. For a neat example of how this type of organ sound was used in popular music, check out "Tell Her No" by The Zombies. You might be able to find this song on a jukebox in a 50s diner. At least, that's what the numbers said it was when I looked into the machine to see what exactly I was hearing. It'd be a damn shame if the digits were screwed up...

My favorite is Under The Pink. It has the kick-ass song 'Cornflake Girl' =) A very kick ass CD overall. Little Earthquakes is a really bitchen one which has 'Silent All These Years'. Those are her two big radio songs, plus what's playing off the current release. Check 'em all out. =)

    Hello all,

    > How many of you out there have had a good listen to the Space in your > face album by the Galactic Cowboys.... > > Thought's anyone???

It's funny you should mention that. I just brought that cd to work with me yesterday. It's the first time I've listened to it in a couple years. I didn't know who the Galactic Cowboys were until I saw DT back in '93. All I remember is some guy coming up on stage during one of their songs with a big sombrero, playing the acoustic guitar and singin' and having fun. They were/are a pretty "fun" band . . . always having a good time up on stage. Oh, and who can forget them coming up on stage with DT to sing the background parts of TTT. But Space in your face is the one album of theirs that I like the best. Actually, I like them all . . . I'm not too picky when it comes to music. And I'm sure others have many thoughts. Don't we have the guy who runs their website on this list. I forgot your name . . . sorry.

    -Brian Anderson

p.s. Galactic Cowboys is the reason I met my best friend back at school when I was a freshman. He was in my dorm room hangin' out, and we got talking to music, suddenly GC came up and we couldn't believe each other had heard of them. Needless to say, we became instant friends, and proceeded to room together for the rest of our colleger careers, and go to many shows . . . including DT . . . together. (I'm talking about Ted, for those who know . . . Babs, Brian Wherry . . . although they probably figured that out already.)

    Two MP3-related questions:

    (1) Are there good-quality MP3s of "Where Are You Now?" and/or "Raise The Knife" (w/ vox) floating around out there? All I've been able to find are Real-Audio files, which I'm not a big fan of. If someone would send me either the files (whee!) or the URL of a site where I could find 'em, I'd be much obliged.

    (2) To those among us who burn CDs from MP3s (or not from MP3s even)...what are some good (cheap/free) programs that'd allow one to lay two successive tracks without a 2-second gap between? Private E-mail is probably best.

So I was down at the local music shop, and I took a look at the new Yamaha stuff. They only had the EX-7 there, so it was nothing special. They'll have the EX-5R hooked up soon, and I'll have to take a look at that. Picked up a brochure, and I may be sold on it. :) Sampling, physical modeling, analog style synthesis and some new funky DSP-based synthesis all in one box. Sounds pretty cool.

So I'm thinking of starting a new thread among our keyboard-playin' members. What's your dream setup? I mean if you could get anything, but you actually had to play each piece of gear (i.e. no "one of everything") what would you get?

Part of the reason I'm curious is that I'm getting a new car, and the $10,000 I'm getting for my old one is prolly all going to keyboard gear, so I might as well know what's out there. :)

    Here's my ultimate list:

On keyboard stand #1: Master controllers Roland A-90EX -- 88 key, piano style controller with the works. Roland A-70 -- 76 key, non-weighted version of the above.

On keyboard Stand #2: Specialty boards * Roland JP-8000 -- Great for analog leads and playing with sound. Don't believe them when they tell you it's just for techno. Want those fat 80's Rush synth leads and bases? Here they are. Roland VK-7 -- For when the need for a Hammond can't be met by anything= else.

In the Rack: * Korg TR-Rack -- rackmount Trinity. nuff said. Roland JV-2080 -- rackmount of the JV series sounds. Yamaha EX5R -- just talked about it.

    * means I have it already.

Hey guitarists and other musician folks: join in. What's your dream gear? :) Skads, slap me and I'll shut up.
