Yes, Adam's backed-up order (which I am converting to a refund ONLY
because of extenuating circumstances, so don't ask) took that long. No,
there's no excuse for it. Yes, I should have had it done by now. It's
the exception and not the rule, however.

I agree with Ernesto that a key to achieve a decent tone and speed on the guitar that you must analyze how hard you fret the notes. It really takes VERY LITTLE pressure to produce a note. However, legato usually requires more pressure than picked notes with the fret hand because your fret hand is also creating the vibration to create the tone (atleast for hammer-ons). I also apply more pressure with my picking hand (while it frets for 8 finger technique) because you typically "fret" higher up on the neck with the "pick" hand (meaning less overall string length and a tighter string). So I can see scalloped frets giving the advantage Chris P (I believe he is the original poster of this idea). But what it really comes down to is guitar players use the scalloped (usually higher) frets for improved bending. There is no denying that scalloped frets do serve their original purpose. I think Chris P. just expanded the possibilities and seems to have a legitimate point.

Hello, I have been posting a message of late that deals with my desire to unload bootlegs at a fixed price. Though I've been steadily selling them, I've come to notice that this is not considered a service to fans any more. They would rather tell you how to find the CDs at other sources. Fine, caveat emptor. But keep this in mind. There were DT fans four and five years ago who spent good chunks of money to buy discs they were assured, with good reason, would be collectible. After all, if a distrubutor says only 150 will be made, and there are thousands of DT fans, then they ought to be collectible, right? WRONG. These "distributors" two years down the road realize that now that their operation is a BUSINESS and not a service to fans begin to reproduce those CDs and allow others to do so as well. At first, it was just the impossible to come by ones like Subconscious. Even then, you could still find an original that would sell for $100 or more by auction. But now that's not the case. Now the bootlegs that I bought for $25 and should be able to sell at least at those costs (plus shipping), are difficult to sell to fans. Why? Because businessmen, claiming to be fans, are knocking the discs off on their burners. Make no mistake: if his reason is to make an income off the production and distribution of CDs, he's a BUSINESSMAN, whether he's in college or selling "environmental products" full time. I am a collector. I had nothing to do with making these discs. I was a DT fan who wanted to hear all of their music and was willing to pay a premium to do so. Now it seems the fans that were there from the beginning are getting screwed for paying that premium. I even paid $25 at the start of the PT and TDoW pressing only to learn that fans who jumped on the reservation list late only had to pay $20. So much for being the early bird... One fan came to me to buy discs, then said "hey KTS is back in business, I'll try them". Go try them. They're great, and I mean that in all sincerity. What they do is make bootlegs, sell them and never pretend to be anything else. I paid good money for two KTS boots and I recommend anyone else do the same. KTS is a business. These other guys, to me they've all just become charlatans. And for those who would reply, "aw, he's just pissed cuz he can't make money off his discs", that's far from the case and you've missed the point. I bought "collectible" discs at fair prices and find the value now is undercut by the same person who sold them with assured collectibility. I'm trying to resell them AT COST and find my posts surrounded with "check out this site" posts. If I don't sell the CDs, fine. I can always listen to them. But I'd rather fail to sell them because people don't want them, not because fans are out there to make a buck off them. And the worst part? It used to be a challenge to find a good boot, and a joyous event to purchase one or just TRADE to get one. Now the "fans" don't trade tapes, they burn CDs... You'll never know what this music meant to the generation of fans before you.

Dream Theater has 4 musicians and a vocalist. Mike's a musician, hence the "4". Two previous members of Dream Theater have left the band. That's the "2". If everyone leaves the band, no one will be left. They will have "0" members.

    or...

Dream Theater has 4 full-length albums. Dream Theater has 2 EPs. Dream Theater has 0 record company support <g>.

The only way we'll know the actual reason is for Portnoy420 to tell us directly. The birthday thing, the Promark thing, and even the pot thing, all sound pretty cool. Interesting coincidences.

So, is there any significance to 620? (My birthday)

I read in Rolling stone that knac, the old metal station, still exists, on the web. Go to http://www.knaclive.com. I think that is the url. If not, I am sure it exists in a radio index somewhere.. Even the old D.J.s are there. I know I am on the east coast and don't know what it is, but I remember people bemoaning the demise of knac and though I would pass this info along. Get your realaudio players fired up now.

I should be back by 6/21/98 and will contact you when I return with the particulars. First come, first served, unless I like someone else better. Hey Mads? I re-sold Subconscious for $100 -- but the price I initially offered it for was $25, which is what I paid for it three years ago. (the *only* manufactured CD I bought, btw). I let the guys figure out what THEY were willing to pay in order to get their hands on it. In retrospect, I probably should have let it go for $25, period, and drawn names out of a hat, because there were *so* many people bidding for it. Eh bien.

If you ask me, the people who PAY that much for the CDs are as much out of their fucking minds as the people that are jacking up the prices. There is no CD in existence from ANY band that is worth that price. I don't really understand the willingness to pay that much money just to *have* a CD... just like I don't understand why anyone would actually pay three hundred bucks for a Black Lotus M:TG card. ::snicker::

Well, got my copy of Open All Night Record's Into The Great Unknown CD last week... I must say, I am impressed. First off, the liner notes and look of the CD are very professional. Better than what I used to expect from a Mike Bahr release back in the Subconscious days... The sound quality is very good, but (obviously) varies from track to track (its a sampler CD, for those who didn't know). The DT and Savatage, bands that I wanted to hear, sound very good. I am about to place my order for their CDs tomorrow... Its also cool to hear some of these bands that I keep hearing people talk about. I had heard Vanden Plas before, and will definatly order that one when they realease it. Anyway, for those who were sorta questioning ordering from OAN, it is well worth the cost.

Well, just figured I'd post a review of the Savatage show from Danbury, CT from last Thursday evening. First, got to the club at about 7:45, and we were not sure whether the show started at 8 or if doors were at 8. We got to discover doors were at 8. As usual, I had a DT shirt on (as did Sarah Fontes), which led to the normal DT and prog discussion w/ several people in the crowd... Ran into a few people who recognized me from the DT Hartford show... So the doors open, we go in, and head up front. The first opening act was very cool, a local prog band call Crucible. I recommend seeing them to anyone who has the chance... they were good enough that both Jeremy and I bought a copy of their CD. Onto the touring opening act. They were (IMO) bad, and a poor choice for an opening act, they were more of a punk/thrash band, and did not fit at all (I got so bored I started to play card games on my Pilot while they were on stage). Finally, their set ends at about 9:30-9:45. We figure we would actually be out of the early... The crew starts setting up the stage, but were having major problems w/ the guitar setup (not sure what). This took quite a while to solve, and Savatage finally came on at about 10:50. Anyway, onto the

]From Jeremy, the set list was as follows:

Welcome > Chance > Jesus Saves > Turns to me > Morning Sun > Handful of Rain > This is the Time > The Hourglass > Blackjack Guillotine > The Wake of Magellan > Dead Winter Dead > Edge of THorns > Chris Caffey solo > When the Crowds are Gone > Gutter Ballet > Encore: > Paragons of Innocence > Sirens > Hall of the Mountain King

I am a relativly new Savagage fan, and not too familiar w/ stuff from before DWD, although I have a few of their older stuff as well... The stuff I was familiar w/ was very cool... Welcome was a perfect choice to open the show with. Paragons was very cool... they said this was the first time ever played live. All of the counterpoint songs they played were very cool... neat to see tht they pull it off live. Overall, as Jeremy had mentioned, they are not very tight live, sorta sloppy., but still was a great show. Well worth the 2-3 hour drive, and getting hjome at 4 in the morning (I still got up for work at 7-7:30 Friday, was sorta dead tired at work all day)
