Hmm. I semi-agree with you. Tape trading used to be a great hobby that I
think has really gotten distorted by the availability of CD boots for sale.
Now, it's not the fact that it's on CD that's the problem. You can trade
boots on any media and still keep the original integrity of trading. It's
when money starts changing hands that the problems usually come in (not
only the lack of integrity but also legal probs). At one point or another
I've traded with people for cassette, DAT, minidisc, reel to reel (Grateful
Dead trade), and CD/CD-R. I have stuff in my collection I can't even play
when I'm at school because my only access to a player (ie, minidisc and
reel/reel) is when I'm at home in Atlanta. I can't even put that stuff
(probably two dozen shows, half of them DT) on my list. I do it for the
sake of collection and I have a great time with it. Never at any time,
however, will I sell a bootleg. That's what I have a problem with.
So, IMO, it doesn't make you any less of a fan to trade boots on CD-R, but
when monetary profit is involved I've got issues. I hope that clears up my
stance (and I think several other people agree with me).
As for the Bahr apology in the last Jam, I'll believe it when I see it. I
didn't used to be this jaded, but I've learned from bad experience after
bad experience. I don't want to start another Bahr thread, tho', so I
won't speak of that anymore. Take care all!

Lobsterback requested I include something by these guys. So here we
go.
These two disks released by Sony Classical stretch the boundaries of
classical music into other acoustic territories. And I wouldn't know
about them if my roommate wasn't a channel surfer. The first song,
"The Green Groves of Erin," I heard first on "Loosely Mozart" by
Great Performances. Here we have Yo-Yo Ma, world famous cello player,
Edgar Meyer, well known double-bassist in classical and bluegrass
circles, and Mark O'Connor, a fantastic bluegrass fiddle player, playing
a beautiful Irish folk tune. This album, APPALACHIA WALTZ, takes
advantage of the place of the stringed instrument in classical music,
as well as the fiddle's place in bluegrass and bluegrass's celtic roots.
The second song, "The Big Cheese," is by Edgar Meyer again, as well as
skilled mandolin player Mike Marshall and absolutely stunning and original
banjo player Bela Fleck. This album is more bluegrass than the previous,
at times reminding me of Bela Fleck's DRIVE. It's a lot less sedate, as
this song, played for laughs, demonstrates. They imagine themselves
moving from one car in the musical train to another, leaping from style
to style. We move from a relaxed bluegrass funk to increasingly boroque
instrumental styles and back again, until all hell breaks loose and the
train goes screaming into yee-haw factor (so to speak). The musicians
regain sudden control, however, though personally I laughed out loud when
I first heard it.
The songs are in mp3 format but are zipped to keep lame browers from
fucking them up. Together they make 3 mb. They'll exist for a week.
Enjoy.

them. I'm trapped using Winblows and about a third of the time it
crashes in the middle of uploading (and about everything else). Don't
have time right now to try again.

I picked up my Suday paper and who should I see on the front page ROB
Barker, better known as Ibenez, or something. He was wearing his DT
t-shirt too. The paper ciruclates throughout Delaware, Southeastern PA,
and Maryland. Check it out kind of cool. Rob made the front page because
he was in the front row at the local jazz festival, which featured Pat
Martino, Russ Freedman, Lee Ritnour, Gato Baberi, Joyce Cooling, among
others...anyway

I've been reading a lot of posts trying to bombard MTV and radio stations
with requests for DT. Well that's good and dandy and all, but we all know
that won't work. We need more action and less talk. We need to form the
ytse-militia. Fuck that peaceful shit.
All guitarists and bassists owning deadly-weapon shaped BC Rich, Dean,
Washburn and Jackson instruments preprare to impale your alternative foes.
I personally say we organize into regions and take over radio stations ala
the movie Airheads. Our slogan will be, "No Music Television without
representation."
Think about we've got some good soldiers like Mike "the wrestler" Bahr and
his cousin Joey. Then there's Mark Metzger, who has threatened me on
numerous occasions. We could then back up the warriors with shred music and
hurt our non-progressive enemies' ears with virtuosic music. Chris Ptacek,
Bafu, and Wacky (sorry Wacky I knew you wanted to drive the infantry
vehicles, but this is better for the team ;) ) could do that. We could then
have snipers throwing poisoned tipped drum sticks and guitar picks. A team
effort could defeat the evil fiends at the record companies and radio stations.
Of course a jammer or two might be lost fighting for the cause, but think of
the benefits- millions of peole listening to progessive music, new fans for
prog bands, and the death of commercial crap. I urge you all to enlist in
the ytse-militia now. The few, the proud, the progressive.

mp3 format. One was from the April '97 European tour (at Kassel I think)
and the other was from June '95 featuring the 'new' ACOS in its entirety.
Can someone repost that URL? I had downloaded both shows onto my
harddrive, but then my system got stolen and at this point I don't expect
I'll get it back.

Hello, those of you who are still on the 'jam during the summer :) I'd
like to relate a little story about a trade I couldn't complete.
I agreed to trade with a person from Holland. If he's on the 'jam, he's
a lurker, because I've never read a post from him that I recall. Anyway,
He sent me 5 CD-Rs of DT boots, and I sent him 5 CD-Rs of Rush boots.
His stuff got to me in eight days, but two months passed and mine never
got to him. I was preparing to eat the expenses and send him another
package, but I got an email from him.
He said that an organization called Buma/Stemra had raided his mail,
found the package I sent him, opened it, and destroyed the contents.
They wrote him a letter (much later, I would suspect) threatening him
with prosecution if he was sent anything else through the mail like
this. I haven't heard from them yet, but I think I might soon.
I searched on the web for hours, but I couldn't find much at all about
Buma/Stemra. Has anyone else here been hassled by these pricks? I
realize that it's illegal in the US for anyone (besides the government,
of course) to raid your mail, but I have no idea about the laws in other
countries.
For the record, I've never sold a bootleg in my life. I've traded for
several, I've traded for blanks even more often (that's how I got
started, and I follow the Golden Rule), and I've given away quite a few.
I am asking anyone who has information on the pigs that call themselves
Buma/Stemra to let me know how to find it. I did find a quote on a news
page that said "Sony and Virgin have threatened to boycott Buma/Stemra
because of their actions in Holland" in as many words, but that's about
it.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned or not, but as far as I
know, 420 is also the police code for possession of a class D substance
(pot). It sounds to me like MP might take pride in the coincidence that
420 is also his birthday, and that is why it appears often with his
name.
