I only have one thing to say, and it's a general comment on those who feel
that "boots hurt the band" (old boot-related topic, but it's come up again)
If it weren't for bootlegs, we would not have A Change of Seasons. Period.
Because of the number of boots out there with the original version of the
song, there were enough people to sign the petition so the band could
record it. I completely fail to see how the band was hurt by this.

Cameron is Matt Cameron from Soundgarden. He's actually a damn good
drummer, and Soundgarden was one of the best alternative/grunge bands of

"Dead Winter Dead" is indeed a great concept album. But musically and
structurally, it is far short of Queensryche's "Operation: Mindcrime."
The emotion that Tate puts into the vocals are nothing short of stunning,
and the guitar work and moods of the songs are chilling. Listen to "Suite
Sister Mary" or "Waiting for 22" for examples of this. The story flows
musically so well, to the point where it almost seems as if it is not
fiction but rather real. I regard Operation Mindcrime as one of hard
rock's finest albums ever, and I don't believe there will ever be a
parallel.

I guess thats right.. but still... now having heard Edge of thorns, Handful
of Rain, Streets, DWD and specially The Wake OF maGEllan... i have to say that
aside from streets ( i just cant get over his vocals, dont get me wrong i love
his work on Dwd and TWOM doing 2 songs on each, but i cant take oliva singing
songs like A little to far and others ) DWD is their weakest effort.... (from
the ones i listed above) and TWOM being their best... but i guess thats just
IMO. But i think everyone would agree that for someone whos never heard the
'tage TWOM is the one to start with!

The best '95 show I've heard, as far as performance goes, is the 10/26/95
Osaka, Japan show on the ACOS mini-tour. I've never heard a better full
ACOS from James and it includes the rare (at least since early in the Awake
tour) Innocence Faded and Surrounded - both excellent versions. It also
has some cool improv stuff from JP and DS. Sound quality on my copy is a
B+.
As far as other excellent boots go, my favorites include these:
6/8/92 New York - One of the first (if not the first) LaBrie shows with the
band. Nothing spectacular, but a good collectors (if there are any true
collectors anymore) boot.
3/4/93 New York - The famous Limelight show. One of the best versions of
the original ACOS (tho' there are better ones on other much rarer boots)
and Eve w/ samples. Alot of people seem to think this was the only time
they played the original ACOS live. There were actually at least 5 times
that I've seen (mostly in Europe).
9/9/94 LA - Just a 45 minute set, but interesting for Jordan Rudess on keys
and pre-Awake versions of alot of Awake tunes. James is superb... Sound
quality is pretty sad.
11/18/94 Houston - Excellent Awake show, and not one of the common/generic
(IMO) Awake CD boots released by bootlegging companies that everyone and
their mother has (ie, 1/24/95 Tokyo or Tap the Rockies which aren't nearly
as good). Good sound and an excellent Voices.
12/29/95 Birch Hell - The classic recorded by fellow (ex?)Ytsejammer Brian
Cox. Excessively bassy when converted to analog (as many DAT masters are),
but an excellent show nonetheless. Scarred!
4/16/97 Tilberg - First ToT and even tho' James' voice was tired that night
he pulled it off flawlessly. Amazing even tho' James got into it with the
crowd some (they got sick of the same setlist 6 nights in a row except for
ToT)... But shitty sound quality - very low levels.
12/16/97 Atlanta - Excellent sound quality (mine's off the DAT master) and
the first time DT visited my home town since the I&W tour. My first DT
show, as well.
1/2/98 Hartford - You Not Me, electric Silent Man, JLMB -> Lie, Metrop w/
Smoke on the Water - Nothing particularly spectacular (except TSM), but one
of my favorites anyway.
1/10/98 Kanagawa (Japan) - Noteworthy for good sound (Mine's 1st gen off
DAT master) and for Nicky Lemmons appearance. Also, the weirdest Ytsejam
I've heard. It's not the Fasten Your Seatbelts version, but they play
several parts of it in totally different time than the original. I'm not
sure if it was intentional (DT fuck up?! Say it ain't so!), but it makes
this tape unique.
1/16/98 Tokyo - Scarred, Speak to Me (first time I bleeve), Japan debut
(and only one AFAIK) of Nightmare Cinema. Excellent sound. Mine's 1st gen
off the Minidisc master.
There it is - The Adam's Notes guide to a few bootlegs. :) The best thing
about most of these is that you can't buy them. You actually have to break
down and do some honest trading. You actually have to assume some musical
(as opposed to financial) responsibility and search them out - like
bootlegging should be. Take care all!

If any of you emailed me since Friday, please mail me again.
My Internet Service Provider "GlobalXS" has been trying to
migrate to a new network... They sent out a letter with new
passwords last week. Except, there was one slight problem...
The morons sent them to the wrong addresses... This means
someone else has been able to get my email.
I'm already missing four Ytsejams and three Freaks digests,
so heaven only knows what else I missed. :-/
I also haven't been able to get online for the last two
days because of this... They simply blocked all accounts
and waited for people to call the helpdesk... I spent five
hours on hold over the last two days. So if you've been
wondering why I haven't updated UACM, that's why.
If you're Dutch and looking for a new Provider, don't say
I didn't warn you about "GlobalXS".

No, poor Graham lives in Thailand and is forced to work in a sweatshop that
manufactures Addidas footwear. He is poor, destitute and blind and his only

My drummer friend's name is Steve Tobin. He's been a loyal DT fan
for the last 6 years. I'd like to mention
that he's in a band called Black Mountain Shadow. Most of their music is

Because they are slackers? The Kindness of Strangers is available from Metal Blade now, so they just have to order it... ask them. Neal Morse announced just this morning that Metal Blade is definitely picking up the option to distribute The Light and Beware Of Darkness, so soon they should all be available in your finer CD stores everywhere!

Modern Drummer's July 98 issue, with Ricky Lawson on the cover, contains a Prog '98 section with their other CD reviews. In this section, they review the Liquid Tension Experiment, Spock's Beard: The Kindness of Strangers, and Mike Keneally and Beer For Dolphins: Sluggo. LTE gets a 4/5, SB gets a 4/5, and MK&BFD gets a 5/5 (wow!) Of course, this is mostly from a drumming standpoint. I could post either of the articles if someone would like me to, either in private email or on the jam. I thought someone already posted the LTE review, but that might just have been a product of me not getting enough sleep lately. :)
As for the CD, I believe you're referring to MD Hot Trax, which I believe can only be ordered, not found at a newsstand (I could be mistaken.) It's a CD which contains many different clips, including Terry Bozzio (I believe this is something from Black Light Syndrome), Mike Portnoy in "an exclusive duet with Tony Levin." Vinny Colaiuta, Dave Lombardo, Virgil Donato, and others. They are $11.95 each. You might be able to order this through moderndrummer.com, but I'm not sure. Hope this helps.
By the way, for anyone who hasn't heard, MP was voted #1 in the progressive rock category in the 1998 MD Reader Poll, beating out players such as Carter Beauford and Terry Bozzio. And his performance on Falling Into Infinity was voted the #1 recorded performance. Big round of applause!

I totally agree! Seems like these days you can almost get more dt info = from alt.music.dream-theater...which is not much to say for this list. = I don't subscribe to this list to read crap that is totally unrelated to = dt. Granted, an occasional post of something interesting is not a = problem but I was thinking the same thing...about one third of the posts = are dt related. This sucks!
