I still fail to see why people call Queensryche "progressive metal." QR
is one of my favorite bands, but I think they're just straight ahead
rock/metal. You've got every song having a strong chorus, standard song
form (verse, chorus, etc) and short songs (very few are >4 minutes). 90%+
of their songs are in 4/4. The only album I think could be called
progressive is Promised Land. There's some really cool stuff on there that
you don't hear on their other albums (PL and Disconnected are cool as hell
and Someone Else? is one of their top 3 songs ever IMO). Warning and Rage
were pretty good, but extrodinarily cheesy. I can't play some of those
songs anymore simply because I cringe at the lyrics. Great band, but I
really don't think progressive is the right label for them.

Oh yeah! Talking about progressive! Rage was so far ahead of it's
time. Those of us who were into the Ryche when this came out were
    blown away.

If you were to hear it for the first time today though, it wouldn't
seem as progressive, since the techniques used on that album are used
all over the place now. (Orchestral "hits", whisper to scream vocals,
heavy "computer style" effects/sounds, sound bites, etc.)

(Of course you have to give credit to the Beatles and Pink Floyd for
doing some major progressive pushes into this area a long time ago.)

But what is progressive anyway? What was progressive 30 years ago is
    really regressive today...

I know the only true test...if it's in the progressive section at the
record store. No.. hold on, that just means that it's not a big seller
or not on a major label...

    Ahoy,
I decided that postponing the Houston Ytsenight until late July
or early August would be a good idea since most people seem to be out of
town at the current time. Sorry about messing up any plans or anything like
that for that evening, but very few people have contacted me so far for the
Ytsenight coming up in a week, so it will get knocked back a few weeks until
more people can come. I'll keep you updated -

    Hello all,

I thought some of you might be interested in checking out the new Chroma Key
web site (it went up today):

    http://www.chromakey.com

It features the debut CK album "Dead Air for Radios", which will be released
through the site on June 22. (You can order online as well as by mail.)
There are plenty of mp3's and RealAudio files for your downloading, um,
    pleasure.

Let us know if there's anything else you'd like to see on the site (mp3 of
demo stuff?), and we'll try to get it up there. (Those of you with web
    sites,
please visit the "Link Us" page - we could use the help!)

    Enjoy, and thanks for listening...

P.S. BTW, all orders recieved before June 22 will be autographed and shipped

Thats nuts, man. If you want a guitar challenge, try playing THAT shiznit! (Ive got the sheet music to all of them if anybody's interested) Also, is DT going to be touring again after the DP/ELP shows? Like maybe some shows in Dec like theyve been doing? I missed them on the FII tour, and I kick myself. Id like to make it up this fall.

    >Andy, keyboardists don't use tabs, they use music sheets (the one with the >treble and bass clefs, remember?). And as for the Firth of Fifth

Hell, I use tabs for keyboards. It's easy enough for me to learn a piece of music by learning the guitar part then switching over to the keys and improvising over the chord structure. If you transpose guitar tabs to harmonica and waddle around like a duck for 10 minutes while stirring a nice brown gravy on high for another 40 minutes, the inverse of the quadrilateral formulation will represent the keyboard structure within four or five nautical miles.

    > Now the "fans" trade CDs and you have a more convenient form for their

Don't CD's all garner the same relative interest rate (plus or minus a point)? Besides, their not as profitable as a high risk mutual fund investment such as the IDS New Dimensions fund. Trade stocks, it's more fun. :)

Would be cool, though. When I asked James at the May 22nd Lubbock show about the possibility of a live album, he only said that there was a "definite possibility". Looks like OFB has done some serious pushing for it lately then. They'd better hope it sounds better than "Stream of Consciousness". ;)

On another note... Everybody just loooves Mike Portnoy. Do you all think the other band members are at least a tad jealous of the attention he gets? When JP was signing autographs after one of the shows I went to this past May, I heard people ask him at least a couple times, "Where's Mike Portnoy?" That's got to be annoying.

By the way, does anyone still have the Guitar School where they transcribed He-Man Woman Hater, with FotWB as an intro, without the delay effect info? This transcripition is a trip due to its sheer inaccuracy! Bafu: > If Andy had said "I'm selling cds to pay for a third testicle implant,"

Please! I don't have nough room for these two huge ones I already tote around! (psst... it's Andrew, Drew, or even Ah-swee-pay: never Andy) *We've got the biggest BALLS OF THEM ALL!* Ptacek wrote: > Buy music as an aesthetic investment, not a financial one.

I missed this the first time around, and have to bow in the face of it's utter truth. No sarcasm implied or intended. But alas, I am purchasing an Ibanez JS 6000 Custom with the accumulated funds. If that isn't an aesthetic investment, I dunno what is... :)

Well, today I finally received my boots from Mike Bahr via FedEx two day mail. Everyone should know (as I always have) that when you order from Bahr, you WILL get your CDs eventually, but "when?!" is the biggest question. For some it's three weeks. For me it was a year and a half. He seems to be getting better on new orders, but I haven't ordered from him since early '97, so I can't say firsthand. Caveat Emptor.

On a quick side note, I've noticed a disturbing trend (at least disturbing for me) recently when setting up boot trades. Many people seem to find sound quality much more important than performance quality. A trader recently wanted a boot with a good version of Scarred. I gave him a few options and recommended one that had by far the best performance, but it happened to have relatively poor sound quality. He wouldn't accept that and instead chose a much inferior performance just because I rated it as an "A" sound quality-wise. I think this is a side effect of CD boot trading (or maybe vice versa). A good amount of fans seem to care far more about sound quality and convenience than about the actual music they're listening to. I'll tell you right now - the best performances DT (and alot of bands) has ever given aren't available for purchase (grrrr) on CD nor are the tapes of alot of those performances of very good sound quality (yup, to many "of"s). I'm not sure why I find people preferring convenience and lack of hiss over performance so offensive - maybe I'm just a boot purist, but it really bugs me. This is one of the very few subjects I'm anal-retentive on. :) Maybe I'm alone in just being into boot trading for the music. Any opinions? (Hmm, that wasn't such a quick sidenote afterall. Sorry) Hehe... Take care all...
