we should do a petition to the label, so they could see we sre still there
(not only on the change of seasons era, when the first petition was sent)

maybe they will see that we hang around for a while and not only just for
    an album.

It was asked in the DT newsgroup, and it's a worthwhile question.

    What is DT to me?

Quite simply, DT has brought me music, ideas, melodies, and words that have become the true, relevant soundtrack of my life. It used to be that Rush held this honour, but each new Rush album gets more esoteric and less relevant. The opposite is true for DT. Each new album does more, means more, accomplishes more.

Working out the notes in Take the Time wasn't the problem for me, I just can't PLAY the damn thing! :)

Derek's guitarish phrasing suits me more, as I'm a guitarist by nature...

But getting back to the point, although it might be hard the first couple of times you work something out by ear, it gets easier and easier, and it really is a very useful skill to have.

Guys, Unfortunately, I don't want to be the bringer of bad news, but I'm about 99.9% sure that the rumors of Jason Becker recovering are false. I'm familiar with ALS, or Lou Gherig's disease, because my mother died of it 2 years ago. She had it for 5 years which is much longer than the average life expectancy of 2-3 years. Jason is a lucky case as well because he's had it for 7 or 8 now if I'm correct. There are some exceptions such as Stephan Hawking who go on living with absolutely no muscle control and are totally handicapped for many more years. Just for living this long shows that Jason is a survivor and from reading his web page he's doing everything he can to stay alive.

"Let Me Be the One" by Bela Fleck and the Flecktones from LEFT OF COOL http://www.afn.org/~afn39111/betheone.zip

What happened is like this: I had my ELP sample (there's that DT/ELP concert you know) all ready to go, I told my computer to upload it and I headed out to the cd store to see if they had the new Voivod disc in (someone mentioned that it had been released in the USA last week). Well they didn't have it, but I was looking around to see if they had Strength in Numbers or Tabula Rasa and I see this. What the fuck? A new Flecktones album was released and I didn't even know about it. LEFT OF COOL. That's what I get for slacking on my a.m.b-f lurking.

Well damn right I picked it right up. And I get home and fucking Windows 95 had crashed again, killing my upload. Well fuck ELP till next week.

First impressions are that this is a great album. We've got the trio and now Jeff Coffin (they keep making fun of his bald head, man, we've got to get Jeff and Tony Levin together to kick some asses) on reeds. Looks like he might be an official fourth Tone, which I guess Paul McCandless wasn't quite. We also see the band diversifying, just like we saw with Vic's WHAT DID HE SAY? Yes, all the musicians are incredible on their primary instruments, but Bela also plays a bit of guitar, mando, and theremin and Futch is now doing pretty good lead vocals on several tunes (and we have some guest vox by dave matthews and amy grant, which aren't as bad as that sounds).

New songs as well as from WHAT DID HE SAY? and UNCOMMON RITUAL (and a quote from the Police). This song, "Let Me Be the One," is just too fucking funky. Since I love funk (for goodness sakes, look at those cakes), that's what you get this week.

You'll notice I haven't really attempted to describe the Flecktones in general. That's because if you don't know, have you been living in a fucking cave? Bela Fleck and folks are jazz/funk/new acoustic/bluegrass sort of thing with the best bassist, banjo player, and drumitar player in the world. They're alright.

The mp3 is zipped because Netscape sucks. 2 megs.

Columbia House records recently did a nice interview with Mike Portnoy and here's what was said...

    "Catching up with Dream Theater"

Big, loud and perfect, Dream Theater is THE progressive rock band of the '90s. Marrying pop impact to mammoth, multi-part arrangements, this band delivers equal measures of big, heavy riffs and spidery, complicated solos. And their latest, "Falling Into Infinity" just might be their best cd to date. Featuring such guests as King's X singer Doug Pinnick and the killer cuts You Not Me, Lines In The Sand, and the suite Trial Of Tears, "Falling..." is a collection of infinite pleasures. DT's drummer Mike Portnoy checked in with Columbia House the other day to tell us what's up!

CH: "Falling Info Infinity" is the band's fifth cd. How do you feel this cd differs from the others?

Portnoy: I think it is definitely our most mature cd to date. We've really struck a balance between the musicianship and instrumentation, which has always been such a big part of the band's sound. And I think the songwriting has really matured and developed to a point where we're able to really focus on a song without getting sidetracked. There's a 12-minute song - Lines In The Sand - and a 13-minute song - Trial Of Tears - so those are the traditional Dream Theater styles, but there are also things that we've never done before. A song like Hollow Years is unlike anything we've ever done. It's very Sting-ish. And Anna Lee is very Elton John-ish. Those pop influences have always been there for us, but this is the first time I think we were able to bring it out in the sound of the band.

CH: Doug Pinnick of King's X is a guest vocalist on Lines In The Sand. What was it like working with Doug in the studio?

Portnoy: Doug was amazing. We've always loved his voice and we've always loved the band. We've gotten to really know Doug through the years. Every time King's X play in New York, we go out to see them. And every time we play in Houston they come to see us. We had this idea of having this call and answer sort of thing on the chorus of Lines In The Sand. We always heard the answer section being like a real bluesy, soulful, "Doug Pinnick" type of vocal part. When we were in pre-production for the cd, we said, "Rather than James LaBrie trying to sound like Doug, why don't we call Doug and see if he wants to do it?" We called him up and he came down and spent the afternoon running through twenty different takes and just improvising. We had a great time. We're really glad that he was able to come down and do it, because it's a nice embellishment to the song.

CH: With so many changes in the music business and more "one hit wonders" than ever, Dream Theater are one of the few survivors who've sustained a loyal following. Where do you see the band five years from now?

Portnoy: Well, it's impossible to guess - the trends are constantly changing. It really is impossible to predict five minutes from now, much less five years from now. I think it's safe to say that we'll do what we do and we'll always have a great solid fan base to support it. I feel very, very fortunate that we're still in a position where we're on a major label and able to do this kind of music. I think it, one hundred percent, can be attributed to our fans. Basically, a band like ours could easily be swept underneath the rug, but our fans are so devoted and so vocal that they make the record companies and the industry take notice. Luckily, they'll stick by us no matter what we do and I think we should be able to sustain this career for the next twenty years because of fans like that.

WOW !! There we go ! Short but sweet and very informative. Showing everyone how much the fans mean to DT !!!

You know, I am a bit concerned.

Gabbo is a great friend of mine, and he can do anything he sets his mind to... but I'm concerned that he isn't setting his mind to this whole faq thing. I think he's got better things to do (and I believe that most things are better to do, no offense to those of you who would kill to be faq maintainers!) I don't think he's reading the jams. That's pure postulation on my part, but it's drawn from the fact that I haven't seen him post or respond to the pseudo-slander he's taken about not working on the FAQ. Here's an idea, though. Nobody tell Pat about this message. That means you too, Irene and Carol, if you're reading. This isn't an anti-Gabbo thing... I prefer that he maintains the document, personally. But if no one tells him about this note, and we don't hear from him about it publicly, then we can assume he's not reading, right? The FAQ is NOT just the DT FAQ... it's the Ytsejam FAQ as well. The person running it has to be active in participation, and has to actively update the FAQ in accordance. If said person does not have time to update the faq, then the person is NOT maintaining the faq. It's that simple. It's not an insult and there's no reason to be angry at Pat if any of you are upset. I don't believe that anyone should be running the faq if he or she doesn't have time to read the jam, at least. Merlo dropped it because he didn't have time. Gabbo should do the same if he doesn't have time. I was actually kind of surprised that no one took issue with Merlo (who I also consider a good friend) passing off the torch as though it was his to pass off... if anyone took issue, Chris would have at least listened, and he did as good a job as could be expected in finding a new Igor for the dungeon. I was even more surprised that Itchy didn't just decide to maintain the faq himself and work with Gabbo. Some people, like Itchy, get an inordinate, and inappropriate amount of pleasure out of that kind of work. These people are a huge, huge asset to the Ytses. All this being said, I think Gabbo HAS updated the faq recently... but I haven't seen a post about it, and haven't looked at it myself. This is the most frequently asked questions on the Ytsejam... that's what it's about, I thought... I would think we'd be informed when it's updated, if only to get some people off Pat's back. Let's wait a couple days and see what comes of this. You may just see a new FAQ tomorrow. If not, I will help organize a way to get a new maintainer, if that's what we need. I personally don't give a shit, but we might as well try to get this issue taken care of while it's still calm. - Chris
