    ************************* SPOILERS!************************************
    ***********************************************************************

Well, here's my (very) belated Savatage show review (the show was
Wednesday at St. Andrews - Detroit).

*sarcasm on* Well, it all started out rather well. *sarcasm off* My
friend I was going with ended up screwing me over at the last minute. I
mean, doors were at 8, and we're talking it's 7:15 or so (and I live 30
minutes away). So I frantically start calling and paging everybody I
    know..... to NO AVAIL.
The thought of not going crossed my mind VERY BRIEFLY, but then I said
"fuck it. I'll go by my damn self."
I did hold hope that I'd run into some Ytsejammers, or Sava-listers.

I arrived 10 minutes or so before doors were scheduled. The line was
surprisingly short (MUCH shorter than the DT line.... at either show).
So I'm standing in line, and these three guys behind me were discussing
what the setlist was going to be like. So I (being the informed
internet-er) chime in with what I've been hearing about the setlist. So
we all start BSing for a few. Of course, I heartily plugged Dream
Theater to the two who were relatively unfamiliar with them (only heard
PMU). The one guy runs across the street and brings back a six-pack
around 8:10 or so (MMMMM Labatts!). Very kindly he offered me one
(Thanks!). Of course, at the very moment I popped the can, they open
the doors (doh!). So that turned into the fastest six-pack slam in
    history!

Anyways, as soon as we get in.... I see the tee-shirt rack, and the
awesome, ass-kicking TWoM shirt they had! SO I make a bee-line for the
stand, while the other guys head to the bar (and buy me another beer...
thanks again!). This shirt kicks ass..... it's blue, with the (old)
Sava-logo in red, and the TWoM burning ship on the front. On the back
is a great Gary Smith painting of a castle overlooking the sea, with a
viking-esque boat. Also there's a small figure with a lantern (or
hourglass?) ascending the steps to the castle. And there's the faces of
the Grim Reaper and an old man (Father Time?) merged into the mountain
the castle is built on. VERY COOL!
Oh, and they had autographed pictures of the band for sale as well (very
cool...... but not as meaningful as the DT pic the band actually signed
    in my presence!).

As I'm leaving the stand, I saw fellow Ytsejammer Partha Mukhopadhyay!
(Good to see you again Partha!) Now I wasn't so pissed about going
    alone!

Partha and I headed towards the stage, and captured 2nd row! And later
on, the guy in front of us moved, and Partha and I both snuck up to the
FIRST ROW! By the way, we were right in front of Jon!

The opening act (forgot their name...... somethingoranotherPhobia or
something) was IMO a re-used riff metal band, not all that good.

Then they started playing some Doctor Butcher over the sound system (I
didn't recognize it.... but someone pointed it out to me). The crowd
started getting excited! Then "The Ocean". The noise level increased.
We could see Sava just offstage, waiting (didn't even recognize Pitrelli
    without his beard!).
Sava came out and proceeded to jump into "Welcome"
    (awesome.....awesome).

Two things I've got to say off the bat.....
    1. Savatage sounded GREAT. FUCKING absolutely GREAT.
    2. Energy, enthusiasm, working the crowd. I've never seen a band
having this kind of fun, and interplay with the audience (even DT).

    member review:

Jeff Plate. I couldn't really see him that good behind his rack (and
from my angle, Pitrelli was in the way), but the drums sounded really
    good all night.

Chris Caffery and Al Pitrelli. These guys just kicked ass all night.
I've been curious about who played the solos, and they traded them off
fairly evenly. Both of them were excellent (it did seem like Pitrelli
was generally turned up louder than Caffery). One note: Pitrelli
should be a spokesperson for a cigarette company.......... the guy
    doesn't stop!

Johnny Lee Middleton. This guy has alot of energy, and obviously has
ALOT of FUN! He was just all smiles, all night. It was fun to watch
    him. Sounded great too!

Jon Oliva. I've always been a Zak fan, as opposed to Jon (but that's
also based on limited Jon exposure), but this night he made a believer
out of me! He sounded great on the songs he sang! Also the keys
sounded excellent as well. And the best thing...... his interaction
with the crowd was awesome (more on this later).

Zak Stevens. He sounded truly brilliant, and when he wasn't singing he
was the world's best cheerleader. He was constantly working the crowd.

Some (not all of 'em) musical highlights:

"Chance" The whole song including the harmony part!
    "Jesus Saves" Wow!
"Turns to Me" Zak kicks ass!
"Morning Sun" This one sounded excellent!
"The Hourglass" Pitrelli played piano for the last part of the song!
    (a cool highlight).
"Blackjack Guillotine" This one kicked all kinds of ass!
"The Wake Of Magellan" Everybody but Jeff sang the harmony part.
"Believe" This was the first time I heard this song (just got Streets
on Friday), and it's the one that really sold me on
    Jon's vocals.
"Gutter Ballet" Zak and Jon traded vocals on this one, and it sounded
absolutely JUST LIKE the Japan Live '94 version! I
love the "kill the unicorn....." part!
"Tonight He Grins Again" Also the first time I've heard this one!

note: The 4 and 5 man harmonies all sounded KILLER! (honestly better
    than I thought they would).

    Some FUN STUFF highlights!:

This one guy behind us in a Red Wings jersey. He was seriously excited,
    and kept chanting "O-LIV-A, O-LIV-A!"
Also, a few times he yelled "Old City Bar!". I know it's a song on the
TSO disc, but what's the significance?
One time he yelled it, and Jon got a big laugh out of it (he was singing
at the time..... and you could actually hear him chuckle over the lyrics
    for a second!)

More Jon interacting.... He pointed out quite a few people in the crowd
(including the Red Wing guy a few times). I'm also 90% sure he pointed
me out once! And getting stared down and pointed at by Jon is actually
kinda frightening! He's got that EVIL look!

A few times Jon had a quick vocal exchange with folks in the balcony,
but I couldn't make it out.

Zak's cheerleading. He was CONSTANTLY leading the crowd! And I can't
count the times he signaled the crowd to clap/ raise their hands. And
after audience singing parts, he's always give an enthusiastic,
encouraging THUMBS UP. He was all smiles, as well.

At one point, Jon and Zak went offstage (I think it was during
"Blackjack Guillotine"), and when they came out....... they were
waltzing together! They waltzed over to Caffery, and Chris looked at
them, then looked to the crowd (with an absolutely hilarious "oh God"
expression) and shook his head no. Then Jon did this fake butt-grab to
    Chris! Hilarious!

Also, during the waltz episode, Jon got behind Chris (where Chris
couldn't see him), and played air guitar. He REALLY exaggerated it
though...... and purposely looked goofy doing it, making fun of Chris!

    Quotes:

"......and on amazing lead vocals, Zak Stevens! And the rest of us
alcoholics on backup." - Jon Oliva

"I tell you one thing. I'm betting all my fuckin' money on the Red
    Wings!" - Jon Oliva

(finger motion) "1 - 0" - Zak Stevens, referring to the Red Wings'
    lead on the Caps.

Aftermath: Well, for one thing...... Partha and I were hoarse as hell!
This was the loudest I've ever yelled at a concert (and Partha said the
same thing). I would've stuck around to try to run into the band, but I
had to wake up at 5 a.m. for work, so I called it a (great) day.

The verdict: Without a doubt, the second best concert I've EVER SEEN
(topped only my May's Dream Theater show.... and that had the unfair
advantage of me meeting the band after).

ANYBODY WHO HAS A CHANCE TO SEE THESE GUYS......... TAKE IT!!!

Well until next time (who's going to DT/ELP/DP at Pine Knob?),

    - Joe DeAngelo

I think the reason Mike Portnoy is more "popular," is because he is the most
tangible band member. No other member of DT has ever been as accessible
as Mike. That will boost the popularity quotient in a NY minute.
Let's face it, they all will have a fair degree of popularity on sheer
talent alone, the big difference is when you're a fan of you fans.

I downloaded all the Chromakey MP3 files. IMHO, Chromakey sounds
