Well, I'm not necessarily a qualified vocal judge, just a drummer in a
cover band, until recently. My singer doesn't have LABRIE'S range, but,
not many do... But he(my singer) has an extremely clean voice, and has
an almost unbelievable presence, lots of midrange power. Don't get me
wrong, he has a very big range, but I just don't compare singers to
Labrie. He comes close though, I would venture to say. And he had NO
vocal training, he's 32 years old, and played the club scene since he
was 18. Who says that experience can't get you anywhere :) I guess it
comes down to inherited vocal qualities + lots of work and taking care
of that voice. I've seen a lot of guys shred their voice to pieces from
not exercising enough(vocally)... It's just like playing any other
instrument, except a singer can't buy new strings, or drum heads, or
trade their piece of shit guitar in for a better one. Have to take care
    of the voice....

    I'm drunk at noon :)

Dream Theater is planning on playing "Another Day" at the special
fanclub concert in Rotterdam on June 22nd. Only problem is, they
don't have anyone to do the soprano sax part !

If you're a good soprano sax player and can play the sax part on
"Another Day", this is the chance of a life time ! You'll get to
rehearse with Dream Theater THIS Sunday and play on stage with
      them on Monday !

If you think you've got what it takes, call Barbara Molendijk
or Nicole van der Valk at Warner AS SOON AS POSSIBLE at the
      following phone number :

        035 - 6465600

Anybody familiar with the Great Kat?

She's a Juliard Graduate with just about the snottiest attitude I've
seen (excluding a few members of this list, of course... ; )
In her "Beethoven on Speed" album, she did a version of FotBB that
knocked my sox off back in '92. (of course, this was my pre-DT days...)

If you skip the songs that she wrote and only listen to the classical
pieces she does, it's not half bad for speed metal.

Oh, and by the way, I'm Looeee. Nice to meet ya'll.

Here's to hoping I don't cause a huge landslide of ASCII crap.....

    Hello gang :

I called the Hinckley, Mn Grand Casino for info on the Deep Purple show there
on August 23rd (which we all want to see all the more because of DT )....It IS
a confirmed date ! It is also an all ages show, so whoever it was that was
concerned about this a few jams back can rest easy now....Tickets are $29.50
or $22.50, and apparently just recently went on sale....If you don't buy them
in person at the Casino, you can get them through Ticketmaster.....Hope this
helps some of you, and we should all meet somewhere before or after ....I will
    be there for sure !
If you're listening , Mike P , Thanks for coming back around here ! See you
Aug. 23rd, with banner in hand....

    >him, is how he gets his voice so high and clear??

Answer: Tight leather pants. All the great tenors wear them. Andre Matos,
Bruce Dickinson, James, Geoff Tate, Luciano Pavoratti...

BTW, just to make sure I was spelling Luciano's name right, I entered it in
on Yahoo. The first entry in the search results takes you to some Greg
Holtz's website who sings for a Philly metal band called Creature of Habit.
heheh. I just thought that kicked ass. The soundclips on their site aren't
bad. Sounds like a cross between Saigon Kick and Pantera. heheh.

    >training that anyone could do and manage to get that high or
    >he is just very very lucky??

Training helps a ton. You're own voice is unique (supposedly) so he was
lucky enough to have the voice he has, but it takes training in order to
develop the healthy vibrato and power that he has. And practice, practice,
practice. Remember also that James has been involved in singing since he
was just a kid singing in church and with his dad's barbershop quartet. Not
to mention his professional operatic training. Then there was that stint
with Winter Rose... but that's another story.

Now for that healthy smile and shiny coat he eats only Science Diet brand
pet foods. I'm not sure whether it has any influence on his singing, but it
sure helped him develop a positive attitude.

Yeah, the new stuff by Bela Fleck and the Flecktones is really good.
I just saw them last week in St. Louis and was totally floored by all
the guys. Jeff Coffin (who wears his hair upside down, as they said
:) is a really good addition to the band. Damn good jazz sax player.
It was a really fun show with a whole lot of all out jamming. If any
of you get the chance to see these guys, do it. Funky, soulful,
    jazzy, and just damn good.

Working Man - The tribute to Rush, a must for fans of the participating

Devin Townsend- Ocean Machine Biomech. I liked him in Vai's band and this

So, here I am...I play keys, I love keys, I am keys...but I don't know the first thing about keyboards. Sure I've owned a couple, but who hasn't had their share of Yamaha PSR-500's? They were fun when I was just messing around, but now I want something real. So here's the question...

I have experience playing keys...I'm not the world's greatest, but I'm fairly good. I want a professional model that will last me a loooooooooooong time (or at least long enough to become good enough to buy another). I also want one that sounds really, really, really good. I know Sherinian plays Korg, but is that the one I want? Pleeeeease help...

    hey all...

Item #1 on the agenda: could someone please forward me the digests 3983 and 3984? I got the former as a download file which ended up being inreadable, due to my ignorance, and the other one never came. Been experiencing some 'jam withdrawal here.

2)I also need a bit of friendly advice, if you can oblige.

Me and a friend of mine are planning on going to the DP/ELP/DT Jones Beach show on August 9th. Before I buy tickets online, I want to find out some stuff about the venue. I've never been there, and want to get the best space for my money!! Thing is this: we're there for DT, so we're not going to purchase the expensive tickets. We'll probably leave after they play, to beat the crowd out of there, and get home at a somewhat humane hour. We're shooting for the 15 dollar tickets, which are listed as -any area for this price -standing room only -mezzanine

We don't want to be ass-far away from the stage. I don't know what the fuck any area for this price means, and whether you can get something really sweet with that selection, or the crappiest part of the place. What is best to go for? Is standing room in a god-awful section of the place, behind people who have seats? Anyone who's been there, please let me know. It would be MUCH appreciated.

First of all, I'm sorry to hear about your horror story. It's definitely the cashier fault. We (myself, Pam and Ryan) got the "upper loge" seats, too. They are in front of the mixing console. Actually they are good seats.

    >Oh btw, to those that went to the Fillmore box office... how long was the line?

Quite long I think. I arrived there since 7:40 a.m. and there were about 4-5 people sleeping in front of the box office waiting to buy the tickets at 10 a.m. I thought they were homeless people but they were Greg Allman fans. It's too bad that the computer system of BASS went down in about 15-20 minutes and the other problem was the cashier did not have changes for people. We got the tix around 10:40 a.m. on Sunday. We were lucky that we brought cash on that day.

I would say that the Fillmore box office is not professional enough for selling the tickets at the first day of going on sale but it's a lot cheaper than paying a lot of money for the service charge if you purchase the tickets at BASS.

    Regards, AE
