    Hi everyone!

So, I was just skimming through the latest jams, and no one mentioned
the Hungarian gig! Am I the ONLY Hungarian jammer, OR WHAT ? :)

    Here`s a quick summary:

The show was on the 16th of June in Budapest`s Petofi Hall. On that
afternoon, MCD record store also organized a dedication! (I got my FII
    signed)

We arrived to the scene at around 19:00 (aka 7pm), and we heard them
rehearsing Hollow Years and Ytsejam(which they didn`t play at the
    show, unfortunately) !!

The guest star was RMP, but they had to wait until 9pm, because there
was some festival in the City Park, commemorating the `56 revolution
or something, and they couldn`t hear the speeches because of the
"noise" coming from the hall... WTF cares - I don`t give a shit to
history when DT is playing ! :-)

So, after hearing Three Minute Warning three times in a row (!!)
through the PA system, Mr. Rudess and Mr. Morgenstein appeared on the
stage... I am now trying to describe how amazing this was... hmmm... I
can`t find the right words... Anyway, it was great to see, how much
    they enjoyed playing MUSIC!

After the usual stuff over the PA (I haven`t heard RTK with voices
until now - it`s fantastic!), DT began at 10pm with ACOS part one.
They played several songs from FII, Awake and IAW (UAGM, PMU and
Metropolis/One at the end). I can`t really list them all, there were a
couple of joined tracks (? - you know, when they play a medley of
2-3-4 songs), they also did LITS (the full version).

In the middle of CIAW Mr. Portnoy did an amazing drum solo - this one
was interactive: at one point he disappeared behind his drum kit, came
down to the fans with one of his drums, and started to jam with them!
During the show, he often threw drumsticks at Derek, who could hardly
catch them, but tried to throw them back at Mike - and this all
happened during pieces like Voices or Lifting Shadows...

Peruvian Skies had a different middle section (what was it? Anybody
knows?), a different chorus ("under Hungarian skies", hehe) and at the
end of the song they went to "Enter Sandman" for 5-10 seconds (isn`t
that ironic? ;)) They also did an acoustic part incl. Anna Lee and HY.

James was 100% this time (when not?) sometimes he was even better than
on the CDs (he streched high notes, like some opera singer), he was
very happy on "this amazing turnout" , which they "didn`t expect". I
can`t estimate the number of fans out there (I would say 4-5000), but
it was originally planned as an indoor show, and they had to put it to
    the outdoor stage).

Petrucci`s solo contained some folk song (?) and a classical piece
(The Flying Bee from Korchakov? - I`m not sure, someone said this - it
was FAST as HELL), later, together with Portnoy, they began to play
Paradigm Shift (!!!) from LTE - until that "balcanic melody" part (you
    know what I mean).

DT play more than 140 minutes, and my head was blown away! They KICK
ASS live! Even the songs I found average before (BMS) simply ROCKED! I
will definately come back next summer! (James - you promised it, man
    !! :))

OK, so it was not so quick as I planned... I just couldn`t stop
    typing... :)

    Bye,

    Andras

That's one of the reasons why I think that James is one of the best singers in rock today: He even got balls in his highest registers. Just listen to "The Mirror"! Great name, BTW... ;-))

The sound samples are at: <A HREF="http://www.noiserecords.com/noise.html">Welcome to Noise Records</A>

Some of the samples are more complete - but the average sample is 1:30 in Real Audio format.

My first impression is shock. Superior has really stretched out on this album. Behind is a great album, but Younique is amazing (from the sound clips I have heard). IMHO, Younique is more experimental. Some of the progressions are very "unique". I also can really get into the "ambiance" sounds. Each song sounds very rich and "detailed". All of the sudden August 31st seems so far away.

A few more specific notes song by song: Not With Me - Sample starts out with a sort of "tribal" heavy guitar (my impression). Very cool start and stop "rushed" groove on the verse. It is in 4/4 HOWEVER - the feel is more like 7/8 to 9/8 to 7/8 to 9/8 etc because the even measures start an eighth note early. If it were straight 4/4 the second measure would tend to have an upbeat syncopated feel - but instead it just feels like your heart jumped too fast :o). I love playing with "time" like this. Cool vocal fx too.

God's Funeral - This song is more "prog". Very cool chord progressions. Beautiful and serene section in the middle.

I was going to go through all the tracks - but it is late and I'm tired. Variety is the key word for this new album. Check it out. I love it already.

    Hi,

I don't know if this has been discussed but I finally got to the Chroma Key site and had a listen to the sound clips. I would like to know what you guys and girls think of it. I think it shows promise, I like his vocals (quite Peter Gabriel - ish (spelling?)) and it's good to see he's still well into his sampling. I'm considering ordering the cd.

    Hello People,

Could someone tell me about the advantages of playing a 6 string bass? I imagine that the thicker neck would mean that the Steve Harris approach (grabbing the neck with your thumb hanging over the top) would not be a runner; you'd be stuck with having to strengthen up those fingers instead. I've seen a few books about 6-string chords and scales so is it a very different animal to play in comparison to a 4-string? The Carvin LB-76 (http://www.carvin.com ) looks fantastic; does anyone know anything about it. Rob. ICQ 809343

A lot of people that I know seem to use alternative/progressive interchangeably, when refering to the music (Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, etc) that gets played on the radio nowdays. We on the list use progressive to mean something completely different than they do.

yep, you're right. But all their CD titles sound the same :) Oh, and sting of the bumblebee is pretty accurate. It's basically a cover of the classical piece. Not like Nuno's version which shares only a similar name and the fact that it's a constant barrage of even-spaced notes. And stuff. Moo.

So far I've only had a chance to listen to three samples, but they're awesome!! Superior is definitely my favorite heavy-prog-rock band these days. Their "Behind" CD is superb and from what I've heard so far the new one will be excellent as well. I really love the strength of the vocals combined with the powerful music. Many new prog bands have the musical chops but the vocalist usually lets me down -- but not Michael Tangermann (Superior's vocalist). He doesn't scream or try to extend beyond his range. He uses his powerful voice to add melody and strength to the music. It sounds like you have another "superior" work here Bernd. Well done! I can't wait to get it on CD.

    Steve
