Ummm... You kinda got me there. "Twitch" Most certainly
chugged rooster. I was referring to the earlier stuff like Aldo Nova,
(self titled first album) and Subject. The guy was a one man band.
He played Lead guitar, rhythm guitar, bass & keys for the studio
recordings. He hired various drummers for the studio, and he
would hire an entire band for the tours. Have any of the guitar players
on the jam ever listen to his early work? I'm anxious to hear some opinions.

NP: Willie Nelson... at gun point!

Hey, gang. I happened to see this, and i thougt i'd bring it to everyone's attention.

    >DREAM THEATER's Mike Portnoy told London's Rock Radio Network yesterday >that the band's current tour with Deep Purple and ELP may be their last. >In addition to 20 North American dates, the band are playing a one-off >"semi-acoustic" Fan Club-only gig of old, new & cover tunes in Rotterdam >on Monday and a special 2 set, 3 hour-plus gig in Paris on Thursday, both >of which will be recorded by Kevin Shirley for a new live album and >possible home video for release in the fall...

now, what got me was the "...may be their last." Is DT trying to tell us that this tour is going to be their last?

Hehe. I have to disagree there. I use Lynx myself very frequently on my shell accounts, but I find writing 100% Lynx compatible web pages incredibly limiting. No Java(Script), no DHTML, no advanced formatting, no frames (AFAIK). The Web is _far_ too advanced these days for a text-only material. What's the point of writing an entirely separate text-only webpage when _maybe_ 1% of your visitors will utilize it. Lynx would have been great 10 years ago, but to call it obsolete now is generous (IMO). It'd be like using DOS exclusively now. Given, Linux is a hell of alot better than DOS, but Lynx is as close to an anachonism as you can have in the computer world (again, IMO). Of course, this topic is higly off-topic, so I'll stop now... :) Take care all...

Hey men, women! Ok, three things have I to talk to you about today! 1.) QR, I hope the whole purpose for going independant was to return to prog rock/metal. I hated HITNF, I havent bought it, and I probably never will. Didnt Geoff Tate write "the prophecy" off the first album? I think a lot of the Tate/Wilton tunes were more proggish. And thats good. Id hate to see QR put out another Schlock album. Theyre such a good band. It would suck to see them go out in a whimper. 2.) Yes, I agree with whoever said it, the music scene is shit. Total shit. Unless youre into Techno, or electronic music. But thats just as anti mainstream as DT and our other beloved prog bands. 3.) I NEED A DT HAT!! Who even can get me a DT hat, please email me! ] Thats it! -Awake77

Well I just have to post to YtseJam4000 (or is 4001 the REAL new millenium :o)

Well, I just have to say: EXPLORER'S CLUB - AGE OF IMPACT !!!!!! This CD is outrageous. I've always been a HUGE fan of Magellan and Explorer's Club is Magellan on Steroids. The first time I heard Magellan I thought to myself that I bet they would go over well with the Prog audience especially if they had a resident shredder to produce amazing solos. Well, Mike Varney and Trent Gardner have answered my prayers.

I think the review for the Explorer's Club is as simple as if you atleast LIKE Magellan - you will LOVE Age of Impact. And if you just want to hear Petrucci shred all over the place - well you will like this too. And James Murphy has an excellent solo on Impact 4 - Time Enough. Another repeating name for the solo guest list is Matt Guillory (keys for Dali's Dilemna). I have to say that his tone on this album is perfect and his solos are inspiring. I can't wait to get Dali's Dilemna, so this was a nice teaser for me.

Magna Carta needs a big round of applause. They are consistently proving that a prog audience in America is not nonexistent. I hope projects like this just KEEP COMING.

I was interested in checking out the B.L.U.E. and Charlie Hunter concerts on liveconcerts.com, but couldn't catch them when they were being netcast (Sunday evening). Later, when I went to the site to see if they were downloadable, they were nowhere to be found. What gives? Does it take the site managers weeks to put concerts in the archive section, or am I missing something here? Someone please fill me in.

it is nice to hear someone else mention a non-prog band that can really kick ass! actually, bela fleck and the flecktones had a guest appearance on the new dave matthews album (he is my other favorite band), and they do a pretty good job. and speaking of the dmb, anyone with pure musical interest should check out this band. dave matthews band could sneak in as acoustic prog, but many prog purists diss it because it was thrown into the mainstream. the drummer (carter beauford) has more toys than mike and tries to use every one in each song. he also must have a.d.d. or something, because he tries desperately to change his beat every three or four seconds, making for incredibly complex drum structure. this band is incredible in makeup and creativity - to prove my point, how many other mainstream non-ska rock bands do you know of that have a saxophonist and a violinist at the forefront. if you haven't already, check this band out, as well as the flecktones. (if you like jazz, you should love dave).

in other news, what is up with the liquid tension experiment??? i heard that it was released, and i can't find it anywhere!!! bye for now, brian

Oh, nice double standard there, Ryan. Real nice. Bogie can be late on shit and nobody gives him a second thought, but if Mike Bahr is late, let the flogging begin! At least from you personally; you say as much in your post!! (I wish I had quoted that part) "I know both are late, but I'll vouch for Bogie, and fuck that asshole Mike Bahr".

I have nothing against Mr. Bogovich. Never will. The guy makes good stuff and (ordinarily) sends it mighty fast. And he has a good attitude too, and always has been cool to me. I wish him well, and I hope he has NO trouble ever keeping up with orders in the long run. My dispute here is with Skadz.

But late is late. If you're gonna let it slide for Nick, that's fine, but you gotta let it slide for me, AND Ryan W., and John D., etc etc etc. or else you're just being a hypocritical bastard. And you know better than that.

And DO NOT E-MAIL ME REPEATEDLY UNTIL I ANSWER, all!!! I get more than enough e-mail every day as it is, and I barely get done answering all the requests for order info and CD specs, let alone even denting the "problem mails". It'll get answered when it gets answered. Why? Why don't I seem to have time for e-mail? I'll tell you why: 1,100 pieces of media in four weeks, THAT'S why. 160 SOC and 100 E2E in the span of half that. Coming soon to a mailbox near you, if not already. What would you all rather I do, shoot the shit with you via e-mail, or fulfill your order?

You know, people say I don't post as a fan anymore, that I don't add anything to the Jam anymore, that they're sick of hearing about all this shit. Well, with a double standard like that of our very own list moderator, it's easy to see why. I'd love to post as a fan, I try to go out of my way to do it (the theme threads, the FII thread), but what's the point. Maybe I'll try again sometime when I don't have to wear asbestos-shielding. I'll shut up now. No need to all say it at once. Hell, I'll be pleasantly surprised if this post actually shows up on the Jam.

Oh, good, I DID save it. In your face, space coyote!!! :)

Just curious: does mine look OK in lynx? I've never actually looked, and I don't have Lynx or I'd look now. I was raised on old-school internetting so I'd like to at least be visible to the shell browsers out of respect.

I said that a second ago on IRC. Just thought I'd share with the group. If I was masturbating right now, I'd aim for Mike Bahr and hope I get some in his hair so he has to wash it real good. Don't be an ass. It makes people want to fondle you. But when you're an ass, you're one of those big cottage cheese hairy nasty ones, so nobody really wants to fondle it, they just like to shoot at it with sawed of shot guns and pray that nothing splatters on their new shirt, because seriously folks..who wants big cottage cheese hairy nasty ass all over their shirt? House of Spirits is definitely the standout on your list. I own all the ones listed below and enjoy them all, not a stinker in the bunch. Your own enjoyment may vary based on your tastes, especially if you are big on originality and uniqueness. Most of these bands wear their influences on their sleeves.

    ARKHE Arkhe

I suppose a lot of people would probably dismiss this band as a standard run-of-the-mill DT clone. While I recognize their strong DT influence, I would not dismiss them. They are much lighter than DT, but they are very tight and write some decent songs. The band has the instrumental prowess present in most Italian progressive bands and are fronted by the closest singer to KJLB (tonally). I'd recommend you check it out as long as you are not an enforcer for the originality police.

HOUSE OF SPIRITS Turn Of The Tide

This CD is exceptionally good. It is quite obscure and somewhat difficult to find nowadays. I don't think it is in stock at the Laser's Edge any longer. It is hopelessly out of print. The CD has a dark feel similar to Queensryche's Operation Mindcrime. Musically, the CD has an almost power metal type sound. Olaf Bilic, the singer, is definitely the highlight of this band. He is an excellent tenor. It is a well-produced concept disc. I recommend it highly.

    ROYAL HUNT 1996

This band reminds me so much of Europe, the cheese metal band from the 80's. They sound so slick and over-produced that you can visualize their long flowing hair all poofed up with hairspray. Despite the overly-commercial aspect of the band, they are very good. The new singer (DC Cooper) is outstanding as is the keyboard player. The guitar player is quite competent. This double live CD has real drum playing rather than the heavily synthed, triggered, and programmed drum sound found on the studio releases. This CD really highlights the talent of the band. Unless it has been incredibly over-dubbed, the band's slickness seems to be a product of their talent and not the determination of their producers. I recommend it for fans of excellent keyboard driven semi-progressive pop metal.

    SOUL CAGES Soul Cages

This band slightly resembles House of Spirits, especially vocally. Musically, though, they remind me somewhat of Parallels/Inside Out-era Fates Warning. They are slightly lighter and more "melodic" than Fates. They are definitely metal, despite their laid back sound. I would recommend it for fans of highly-melodic progressive metal.

    MERCURY RISING Upon Deaf Ears

This is a very technical progressive metal band. Their overall approach is very similar to Watchtower without being nearly as annoying as Watchtower is to me and others. The music is complex and somewhat chaotic with some serious crunch, but they somehow manage to remain very melodic. The vocalist is somewhat whiny/tinny reminding me of a mix between John Arch and Ray Alder and will probably be the biggest stumbling block for DT fans. I saw them play last year at Powermad and they were incredibly tight, flawless playing some of the most complex music at the event. I actually like their most recent CD, Building Rome, a little better.

    ZEN Into The Light

What is it about Italian bands and the Dream Theater influence. First, there was Arkhe, then Empty Tremor, and, now, Zen. Somehow I picture a bunch of Italian dudes listening to Images and Words all day long for about five years before getting it down to an exact science. Like, the other two bands I mentioned, Zen is sure to be written off as another DT clone. The singer is very similar to Labrie and the keyboard player is definitely a Kevin Moore disciple. This CD is really not a direct clone of DT. There is definitely a strong neo-prog influence present also. They are right at the soft edge of progressive metal. Again, recommended highly for fans of DT clones.

    Hi!

My feelings after DT show in NUMMIrock, Finland:

The gig was great! Those nice medleys... Does anyone know what was the part inside Metropolis Part I? it sounded like it would have been a piece of Mpolis Part II !?

I think they made a VERY GOOD job! But one funny thing: After they finished their set, everybody laughed, of course, we want more, we want more! But in my ears it sounded like "We want Moore, we want Moore" and I absolutely think the same!

But unluckily, Moore did not appear :( Nor didn't we hear any xtra pieces. :( Only one hour show...
