Did anyone go to the Savatage show last friday at Jaxx? I was wondering
how it was. I, unfortunitly, was commited to do a marathon out of town
    that weekend.

Also, no DT/ELP/DP show in DC? C'mon Mike! I want to see you guys again!
Please see what u can do...

Also, this is a brief message to Mike. When you get flamed by somebody,
please respond PRIVATELY. You know damn well that you won't get much
sympathy from certian members of this list, so why open yourself up to even
more flamage. Plus the fact, we don't care. We don't care if someone
hurts your feelings. Give some thought to what you are saying before you
say it and watch where you send it. Scadz has a reasonable complaint with
people posting on this list who are trying to contact you. This has always
been a problem with you, replying to E-Mails. I have had the same problem
in the past. Again, it has to do with our talks before about customer
service. I'm not going to waste any more of the list bandwidth on this.
If you want to talk further, E-Mail me privately....

I planned to write this last night after I got back from what turned
out to be one of the most memorable DT shows ever (probably only second
to the Ronnie Scott's gig), but I felt too tired so it's now about 8 in
the morning and I thought I'd write down a kind of review.
Don't worry, NO SPOILERS, because I don't think a show like this will
    ever be performed again.

The Fan Club thing (excellent organisation by Theater of Dreams, by the
bye) started a little past 16:00. It consisted of a bootleg video
compilation shown in a cinema type room as well as a small
'CD/merchandise market' in another room. The bootleg video literally
encompassed DT's entire catalogue and was based around the PPV Japan
show of the "Awake" tour with various other bootleg thingies
interspersed. Most memorable to me (from what I saw, anyway) was "A
Change of Seasons" from what must have been the very same show that "The
Dance of Eternity" was recorded from. That rendition of the song is so
chilling, also because I listened to the song a lot while my girlfriend
was abroad for too damn close to a year. Seeing it performed brought
tears to my eyes, it did.
The CD/merchandise market was of limited interest as there were
preciously few bootlegs (almost none actually). There were dozens of
promos ("Burning my Soul", "Lie", "FII") though, so I guess a lot of
people will have had a ball. Alas no Japanese version of "FII" (the only
song I miss in my DT catalogue is "Speak to Me"). Well hey.
The band eventually took to the stage at around 20:35. There had been a
bit of a delay, probably due to the fact that most of this gig would be
video- and audio-taped for inclusion in part on what will probably
become a very interesting live album to appear later this year.
The stage was set up in a most homely fashion, with little space to
move around for the musicians, but all of them pretty close to the
audience, even Mike's drum kit was at the front like the rest of 'em. No
double-bass drum was present, which I have to say instilled in me one or
two misgivings initially. The bass drum has a 'Majesty' logo on it -
perhaps it was Mike's really old one?
Waiting seemed to take ages, prolonged particularly by the simply
horrendously sleep-invoking music played to 'warm us up'. I don't know
which band it was, but I got the distinct impression that I could do
everything I heard, too (and I am not a particularly apt musician). The
fact that I was standing next to what was probably the girl with the
most, beautiful, densely cropped golden curly hair I have ever seen in
my life made the wait slightly more bearable (I say "slightly" because
she was there with her boyfriend :-)
Anyway, they kicked off with the very song I still missed in my
catalogue: "Speak to Me". I'd never heard it before, and it's not what I
had hoped for. Too much "Silent Man" type for me (or "Hollow Years", or
"Anna Lee" for that matter). Anyway, what ensued were about two and a
half hours of ususual and often rearranged stuff. Unplugged performances
    - for under that monicker this gig went - are usually toned down and
plain uninteresting versions of songs that need a lot of balls'n'chunks
(wait until the formerly mighty Met gets offered enough dough to do one,
and I am sure we'll get ample illustration of this). Not so with Dream
Theater. Although some of the ballads, most particularly off "FII",
retained much of their original flavour - "Hollow Years" played towards
the end, and "Anna Lee". They did "Take Away my Pain" as well, a song
that never pleased me too much, but this acoustic rendition was
tintillatingly beautiful. This song, like a few other DT songs, actually
comes across better acoustically, I think. Shivers down my spine
material. Several other songs written by Dream Theater come across
really well 'unplugged', too, and one of these is "Eve", which they also
did. Derek did an excellent job, and as far as I'm concerned only Kevin
Moore's 'with samples' version on "The Dance of Eternity" (and Mike
Bahr's "Subconscious") is superior. "The Silent Man" couldn't be left
out, of course, but I was pleasantly surprised that it has a more
up-tempo, more freaky ending added to it. We even got the song done
twice, because the first time there had been a fuck-up so they wanted to
    do a fix-up.
Lemmesee...we got "Another Day", too, again a toned down but very
interesting version with a guy called Hubert Jan (I think that's the
name, he was a music school sax/clarinet player, but I am not sure
whether he was a fan or not, he got a GREAT reception though) on
clarinet (correct me if I'm wrong and it wasn't a clarinet :-). "Wait
for Sleep" too (a song that hadn't been played live, so said James, for
a long while, I reckon probably not since Kevin left the band), as well
    as "Caught in a Web",

There were plenty of little teasers as well, and these as usual spiced
up the proceedings considerably. John P. and Mike twice launched into
segments off their superb Liquid Tension Experiment (excerpts from
"Paradigm Shift" and "Universal Mind", I think), a third time with Mike
setting in the starting drums to "Chris and Kevin's Excellent
Adventure", John M. sadly shaking his head "I can't do this" and then
ending. They also did a section of "Enter Sandman" in the heavy section
of "Peruvian Skies", the "Carpe Diem" section of "ACoS"), the first part
of Van Halen's "Mean Street" (before launching in a complete Elton John
song unbeknownst to me, that Derek announced as one of his major
influences for his 70's-influenced clothing and decision take up the
piano) and a complete Pink Floyd song (I don't know the title, but it
    isn't "In The Flesh").
Pretty cool was the section where Mike listed and thanking the various
people world wide who run the various fan clubs, each of which was
accompanied by some small musical improvisation by John P., sometimes
joined by one or two other band members. I especially liked his "The
Mirror" intro teaser when Mike mentioned the fan club of the same name.
This section went down really well with the other audience members, too,
as more or less everybody else was connected to one of the fan clubs
(word had it even people from the Japanese fan club had come).
Um...I appear to have left out only "Cover my Eyes" (a song John P. had
written for the guitar, together with "Hollow Years", but a superior
song if you ask me!), "Burning my Soul", "To Live Forever" (another song
that comes great in the evening's setting), "Red Hill Mining Town" and
"Trial of Tears" (which was the final song after they'd redone "The
    Silent Man").
And after "Trial of Tears" ended this completely unique concert. I have
to say I am looking forward to whatever CD/video will be produced from
this, and that I regret I won't be able to go to Paris to see them
perform (on Wednesday?) for what will no doubt be the definitive
    'non-unplugged' DT show.
However, I wouldn't be the usual complaining audience member if there
wasn't one thing the Rotterdam show missed. What with this unplugged
setup, what song would have been more logical to play as the Mother of
all Ballads, the (only?) song DT have never performed outside of a
studio: the hauntingly beautiful "Space Dye Vest"? Alas, they didn't,
and with that these remarks end.
I made pictures of the show, and I think there have to be half a dozen
pretty good ones among them. If you're interested, contact me (not via
the mailing list please) and I'll let you know which ones are worth
while as soon as I've developed them. I was really up close and even got
a good picture of the disproportionately shy John M.!
     Take care,

First of all, I'm sitting here drooling waiting to hear a review of the Rotterdam show. What show that must have been!!!

Second of all, I received OAN's "Static Progress" double-CD set (#11) in the mail yesterday. It's an excellent audience recording. No annoying audience noise, but mainly just the type you like to hear, kind of like the goosebumpy kind you hear at a football stadium. =)

The mix is great, no complaints about the sound at all. It's about as good sounding an audience boot can get, although not as good as the heavenly "The Dance of Eternity".

I've listened to it about three times in the background while I'm working on the computer, but if my subconscious memory serves me correctly, I didn't hear a drum solo or a guitar solo? Am I correct on this? I just got through hearing "Ytsejam" and there wasn't a drum solo there, and there's no "Caught in a Web", so by default there's not a drum solo during the concert at all, which is really rare.

Another thing that's missing is "Lines in the Sand", a song that I grew to absolutely love as my favorite song because of hearing bootlegs of it and hearing it live twice myself. Fulfilling the long-song quotient was "Trial of Tears", which is cool but not as exciting as LitS, as I'm sure many of you will agree. A cool thing we get to hear, though, is "Speak to Me", which is the best live version I've heard yet.

Packaging is minimal. It is definitely glossy, but it looks as if it were printed on an ink-jet printer first, then scanned in and printed on a fancy printer. This is evidenced by the overlapping ink lines. The front cover is some funky but cool art painting of a woman with part of her face off to the side. The flip side of the cover insert has individual photo face-shots from the tourbook scanned in set to the backdrop of a cyan Majesty logo. The discs themselves have the stick-on labels with the same cyan Majesty logos on each, with the particular disc numbers actually printed on there. The back cover has on the upper half a recent photo of the band, the bottom has a tracklisting, all set to the backdrop of the cyan Majesty logo.

As for bonus material, we get "Caught in a Web" (on their to fulfill the drum solo requirement would be my guess), "Lifting Shadows off a Dream", "Surrounded", and "Erotomania", all excerpts from the exquisite Awake-tour boot, "Mind Control".

They received my payment on June 12th, shipped out my disc on June 15th and I received it on June 22nd. I was updated with e-mail, which is how I know these dates, which is very cool.

Overall, I'd say this is definitely worth getting. If you're on a tight budget, however, get "Stream of Consciousness" from Mike Bahr (shipping times are vastly diminishing from what I understand). If you have more moolah to spare ($29 to be exact), get this one as well. You won't be disappointed! -

    Hi,

here a note from me about the fanclub gig last night in R'dam. It was a semi-acoustical session: only "soft" songs were played (no PMU etc.).

The concert was recorded in the presence of Kevin Shirley and taped by three cameras. (camera 1: totally to the left of the stage, camera two in front of the stage to the right side and camera three walking on the stage).

    The stage:

DT perfomed in line: from left to right: Derek with 4 keyboards. Next to him John M and James sitting on a bar stool. Behind them a nice couch was placed were DT would sit down when they didn't have to play. Next to James the drum kit of Mike and on the right side John P. Behind the drumkit and the couch a lot of candles were placed.

Mike was talking constantly in his microphone between the songs. His family also flew in for the fan club show so he showed his kid to the audience (with a big pair of headphones on her head!). Also during Under a glass moon (only James and Derek playing) he brought up his kid and sat down on the couch with John and John.

Set list: I don't remember the complete setlist, but these songs the played for sure: (not in order)

Speak to Me, Lifting Shadows.., Pink Floyd cover, Silent Man (went wrong first time, redone in encore), Another day (also went wrong, after first couplet, restarted immediately), under a glass moon, hollow years, To live forever, Eve, other songs that didn't make FII (don't know names), Paradigm Shift(?) (LTE), Anna Lee, Part ?? of Acos, Elton John cover (?),

Encore: Under Peruvian Skies, Silent Man, LIT.

The played for 2,5 hours, very relaxed, talking to the audience between every song. It was a great concert. I'm sure other people will post the complete setlist

Ah this is what I like to hear! Ok many of you know that I do BG's homepage at www.blind-guardian.com so maybe I am not as unbiased as I should be *chuckle*.

    > And to those who know more of their stuff...there are so many > other albums out there by BG, I was wondering what should I get > first after "Nightfall..."?

If you really like NiM-E I would suggest that you pick up _Imaginations from the Other Side_ next. It doesn't have as many sweeping chorus parts but many people regard it as the best release (even after the new one came out). On the homepage there are some samples from the first BG CD _Battalions of Fear_ and hopefully when I get back from vacation in the US I will be able to put some more samples up from their other releases. But I would suggest that most people work their way back through the BG catalog. Just check the discography section of the homepage for the time line.

So I hope this was of some help. Enjoy.

I've been into DT since I first layed eyes on a review of Images and Words. The album was just released and it was rated 5 of 5.

I got it as quickly as possible and was amazed - such great music!

Now I -- of course -- have all their official albums and they constantly hit my cd player. In my oppinion DT still have not been able to make anything better than I&W, even if Falling Into Infinity is close.

    The albums:

When Dream And Day Unite (2/5) -- For collectors only. A couple of decent songs, but the rest is not very good. Bad sound and vocals.

Images And Words (5/5) -- No 1. It only has one weak spot, the snare sound. The songs are great, the arrangements also. It's smooth, excellent, heavy, moody ... it's got everything. A dynamic masterpiece!

Live At The Marquee (3/5) -- A good live record. The best part is JLB singing the WDADU songs. You can hear it's live.

Awake (3/5) -- With the expectations I had after I&W I guess I couldn't be anything but disapointed. Now I like the album, but not more. To me it seems like the guys didn't think it was as fun this time. Too static in some sense.

A Change Of Seasons (3/5) -- The title track is one of DT's best songs ever - class as I&W (track rating 5/5). The rest is cool cover tunes, but more than that ... nah. However, still a good record.

Falling Into Infinity (4/5) -- Almost as good as I&W. FII has a couple of less good songs, but kicks ass anyway. Most important, the fun is back and also the dynamic in the music (listen to Lines in the Sand and Peruvian Skies).

To relate the ratings to something -- 5 out of 5 are so great you can't tell. I can only think of two other albums that I should rate 5: Metallica's "Master of Puppets" and Queensr=FFche's "Operation: Mindcrime". = 1 out of 5 ain't worth listening to!

Conclusion: After I&W improvements are made and in a couple of albums DT might excell themselfs. Let's hope!

    /Peter Andersson

Dont get offended or something but I really dislike Iced Earth..I dont like their attitude..they seem to be too naive..i've seen them live and Barlow, the singer, started to mumble something about an "ex metal band who got haircut and now plays alternative stuff, they obvisouly want to get more money "etcetc..for whom the bells tolls? yeah its good old metallica..(not to mention i DO like Load and Reload..they're not Master of Puppets but they kick butt.opinions..)..hey i guess many of you agree with him..but u cant say such things when u are dressed like hetfield,u wear the same thingies on your wrists, when you even look like him! even some of their fans told him to shutup.. also i dont like their lyrics.. imo.they are TOO immature.i dont like Schaffer's attitude (i never practice,i just take a couple of hours before we record and i'm all set for 4 months..when we dont tour that is)..a couple of years ago they were a so-so band and suddenly they get into old metallica sound, write an album about the No.1 outselling comic, release an EP like Days of Purgatory and..voila! the "greatest metal band of the '90s!" yeah i've read that too on some magazine..pfff..anyway..i admit i liked Dark Saga but i'd vote for Angra at any time..oh theit newest release is a must-buy too "something wicked.." ..but i heard its very much alike to Dark Saga, hey i wouldnt call the "progress" :) as about Blind Guardian..hey mate you havent listened to "Somewhere Far Beyond" ? :) thats much better than Nightfall in Middle Earth (i still think so,although i am a Tolkien maniac).. "Theatre of Pain" in that album must be one of the best songs ever. check it out... asmodel

Hello, Okay, just read these two paragraphs by the same author in one post. I just find what people do in here so trippy.

    >C'mon, c'mon, c'mon! You all read Skadz last post! Double standards or no >Skadz basically said, "no more heated Mike Bahr discussion on the jam." >Let's adhere to that. It's very noble for you to stick up for Skadz, but I >really don't think he needs it. :) All he has to do is k-line Mr. Bahr if >he wanted.

    >And Mike, you say you're not allowed to post as a fan anymore without >starting a riot? I call bullshit there, pal, cuz alot of your posts seem to >turn into plugs for your business. That's what causes the riots. You're >last post about bootlegs and quality and such was real cool, coming from >Mike the DT fan, and not Mr. Bahr the CD salesman. I think many people on >this list still like Mike the DT fan. I know I do.

And yes, I fully realize by posting this I violated one of Skadz's new rules. BTW, Use an apostrophe AND an "s" on Skadz for the possessive. The only time you do not use the "s" is for the PLURAL, and only after a pluralizing "s". Stodge has concluded the English lesson for the day.

    >For all you fans of the 1998 World Champion New York Yankees. :) >>From: NYYankees <NYYankees@um1.unitymail.com> >>Subject: Scott Brosius chat

Shit like this is gonna make me love it all the more when you guys get spanked come the Fall. And don't get self-righteous with me and say you won't. This kind of post has NO PLACE on this list, or in my e-mail for that matter. We've had problems with sports nuts before. Remember the whole "my country is better than yours" the last World Cup tourney? Oh, and go Sox! :P

    >np-Songs in the Key of Springfield

I resisted ordering this from Columbia House as one of my rip-off... er, I mean "free" selections. How is it? And could we come up with a more space wasting subject than debating browser capability? I have never scanned through a post faster than when I see the word Lynx. Are we really this devoid of musical interest?

Stodge had his bank card taken by the folks at the video store last night and is STILL pissed.
