I read a review from an attendee at the Rotterdam fan club show where he said they'd played "Under a Glass Moon". Well, I distinctly remember, standing right in front of Petrucci, that I would surely have loved to see him play the UaGM solo from so close, but hadn't. Unless I am very much mistaken, or unless he did an adapted solo rearrangement so that I completely missed it. -- Richard Karsmakers & Karin Kessels karies@wxs.nl \===----------- "Ultimate Virus Killer"; "WWW-MMM" -----------===/ | "ST NEWS" Atari disk magazine: www.scriba.org/stnews | |Atari ST Emulation FAQ: members.aol.com/rg1004/atstemu.faq.html| | GWAR FUQ/FAQ: www.gwar.net/fuq.html | /===--- "Twilight World" magazine: www.scriba.org/twilight ---===\ P.O. Hi there, Denis Schoen wrote:

    >Hey you all, > >here's the setlist of the rotterdam-gig, please feel free correct me, i'm >NOT completely sure

Okay, here's what I remember (just some corrections and additions, I'm not completely sure either, though):

    >Speak To Me. >Lifting Shadwos (New Intro). >Hey You. I guess that was the Pink Floyd song that I didn't recognize...

    >The Silent Man. (Electric version, btw)

    >To Live Forever/Lines In The Sand. I didn't think that I would ever hear that song again live, what a nice surprise! It could be added that they only played a snippet of LITS at the end of it.

    >Cover My Eyes. Another surprise for me. John P. on acoustic guitar, btw.

    >Another Day (with Huub on Soprano sax) That was a real unplugged version. Only James' vocals, John's acoustic guitar and the guy with the Soprano sax (they said that he'd learnt the song just two hours ago...). The rest of the band was relaxing on the couch in the meantime.

    >Take Away My Pain (with Huub on Sax) Full band again. John P. still on his acoustic.

    >Wait For Sleep. I hadn't heard that in a while. Very faithful to the studio version.

    >VanHalen tune (?) I didn't recognize it either. It was pretty short so I don't think it was the complete song.

    >Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. And yet another cover version I didn't know. Elton John this time. It seemed a bit familiar though.

    >Eve. Another surprise. Just like the studio version. No samples unfortunately.

    >Anna Lee. >Carpe Diem. Not the whole of it though, just until "but there may not be one" as far as I remember. It should be noted that a lot of it was actually sung by Mike.

    >Hollow Years. >The Way It Used To Be. Another cool surprise. That wasn't the last song of the regular set though, because they also played a cover that I actually recognized: Bad (U2)

    >---- > >Peruvian Skies (with excerpts from Have A Cigar and Enter Sandman). >Paradigm Shift. I'm not sure if they played that in the encore or before. It was only the beginning of the song thogh, played by Mike and John P.

    >Another Day. I have to correct you here. They had to repeat The Silent Man because something went wrong the first time they played it.

And the final song was Trial of Tears...

That's how I remember the setlist, the order might have been different though. It was definately a really relaxed and special night, so thanks to everybody who was involved!

    Take Care, Andreas Berger

Hey kids, Man, Vernon is playing a gig in Baltimore on Friday in what sounds like a cool venue. Crow, if you meet him, tell him Jack says thanks for the autographed posters. I saw Corey Glover in concert on Monday here in Cleveland, and he brought the roof down. The band was tight, and I got to chat with the guitarist/road manager and meet Corey himself. I met him 5 years ago for the Stain tour, and he's still as friendly and down to earth as ever. They should be playing a gig in Columbus sometime in August, and I am there. Hopefully it's Ludlow's, because I've been there before. Anyway, check out Corey Glover's album for some great music that is not like Living Colour. I found 2 Silent Man CD singles at the local record store the other day. They've really stocked up on DT stuff as I've purchased the Hollow Years single, the erroneous Images & Words/Back In Black, and the Live in Tokyo video. They now have the German Live At The Marquee and the Japanese Hollow Years single. And the best part is that all the stuff is new. My Live In Tokyo Video was manufactured recently as the video has white printing instead of a sticker for a label (my day job is at a video store...think of me as Randal from Clerks without the predilection towards hermaphroditic porn). Since I have no use for 2 extra Silent Man singles, I'd like to trade them towards items I'm looking for: -any Chantal Kreviazuk CD singles or non-U.S. releases -King's X "Building Blox" -any Living Colour releases, official or otherwise Since I'm not a fan of ticket scalping, I can't sell these singles for a profit and feel justified. However, if I can obtain items others may have access to, a trade can be beneficial for both parties involved. If anyone's interested, drop me a line. Finally, any thoughts on the new Genesis boxed set? It's being advertised everywhere. Is it worth cheking out?

    Fight the fight,

    Jack

I read a concert review on Deep Purple's webpage in reference to the Monsters of Rock concert the other day. He complained about Dream Theater's set being too long.

Where's the problem in that, eh?

Big Idea Corner -- Has Dream Theater ever considered playing a concert in *the* Dream Theater? Y'know, their namesake. Yeah, yeah, it's a movie theater, but it's got a stage, right. If not, floor. And they wouldn't have to worry about their PA's and such sliding down the slope either, because of its tacky spilled-soda and chewed-up-candy coating. I imagine this concert would be the coolest thing since Iron Maiden played a show trapped in an iron maiden, or Rush played their infamous '92 gig inside Rush Limbaugh's large intestine. And what a gas that was...

A couple of weeks ago I bought the polarized cd by Ivanhoe, and it's never been of my cd deck since. This is the first cd I have heard by this band and was wondering if anyone on the jam has any of their previous releases. I've heard that polarized is their heaviest cd to date and their older cd's are more keyboard orientated and not quite as 'crunchy', but still as good. Is their older stuff worth getting?

Well, I assume someone else who knows all the unreleased stuff better than me will give the full setlist, but here are just a few thoughts.

All in all, it was a bit more laid back than their last visit. There were fewer people, too, 'cause I came late and could still get into the ground floor, which I couldn't last time.

They seemed to be taking it easy at the beginning, but from LiTS (damn that song's good live) they started getting down to it. They played a lot that's not on the albums (seeing as it's their second visit on the FII tour, I suppose), a cracking Freebird, JP did a Flight of the Bumblebee (has Mike been whispering in his ear after recent 'jams?) lots of I&W (yeah!).

Here's a message which my mum, who was a physiotherapist, would have wanted to pass on to John Myung: 'John, stop hunching over your bass. What is it doing to your back and your neck? You know you'll have problems in later life. Do some stretching exercises for your cervical vertebrae'

To the blonde who was taking pictures from the stairs over the crowd on the right: Hellooooo, lookin' good!

James said 'listen to this!' before coming in with a full-on 'I think it's time for a CHAAAAANGE!!!' So his voice is fine, people! And after totally failing to explain which track was added on the Japanese FII, he goes: 'It's a good thing I don't do drugs.' Hmmmmmmmmm.

Derek's setup was a bit more visually toned down last night - no TVs or lava lamps. Though he's still got...clothes.

Mike is looking very well groomed. The sorta guy you could take home for tea to meet the parents.

Both the crowd drummers were pretty good. The second one had the affrontery to match MP though all the hard stuff too.

Was that 'Speak to Me' where JP was singing in the chorus? I gotta have that tune! Where can I get it?

So was there any post-gig opportunity to meet the guys? I was lurking near the stage afterwards, but those wonderful security people were clearing everybody out. They asked me nicely though, 'cause I'm 6ft8 and came in my suit from work. Did I miss anything? Where were the 'jammers standing? (private email's fine).

What are things I want to took for in a scanner? Most scanners today have become cheap plastic boxes with the minimum amount of money spent by the manufacturer necessary to make them function. The popularity of these devices (and the willingness of consumers to buy shit) have been their own undoing. Now that I got that out... First off, go with a SCSI interface if you have the free system resources to operate it. LPT interfaces can be a pain in the ass with some printers and other LPT devices. (Zip drive, cameras and so on) Look at the software bundle, are they the FULL versions of the programs, or stripped down versions. (I.E.: Paperport or Paperport Lite) Can the glass be removed for cleaning without a surgical team? The thing you really need to examine is what as a consumer do YOU need in a scanner. If your scanning text for reprinting documents for work or school, make sure the scanner has good OCR software. Don't get all warm and fuzzy over optical resolution, think of it as a great recording of a lousy band. If you think you're going to use it frequently for business, school or scanning valued photos, save your money and buy a better scanner. The one I use and recommend is the Hewlett Packard 6100cse. The HP can usually be found for around $799.00 US dollars at the retail level. I have far too many customers that have purchased cheap scanners only to find out they were more trouble than they were worth and ended up buying a better scanner and selling off the cheap one at a substantial loss. In the price range you mentioned, the UMAX, Visioneer Paperport or Microtek scanners will work for infrequent use performing non critical tasks. If your need are more serious, but a real scanner. For mid price scanners, ($300.00 - $500.00) look at the offerings from HP & Epson. -> ytsejam(a)ax.com DT at the FORUM UK.,

Well, the guys rocked last night, and as others are better at describing their playing techniques, setlists etc, hopefully somebody else will post those details soon.

Rudess Morgenstein Project were on support, and were very well recieved by the crowd. Rod Morgenstein was on the left and drum kit was on profile, so his right side was exposed to us. Jordan Rudess and his keyboards faced directly opposite on the right side. This meant you could really see a lot of their playing skill.

I did not know they were a keyboard and drum only arrangement, so for me it was unusual to hear no vocals. But no matter, as their sound really uplifted the place. Rod's drumming was vicious, and Jordan's fingers just danced across the keyboard.

I was at the merchandise store after the store (man, what a crush) and their CD was doing brisk sales, so obviously the DT crowd liked them. By the way, 14 pounds for a baseball cap, fook that, so I made do with a tourbook (a fiver) and the CD (a tenner).

Now, the Forum, seemed to be playing to a smaller crowd compared to November last year, as the upstairs seating was virtually empty, and downstairs was not as packed out. C'mon UK, what's happening to us??

Myself and another friend managed to get 4 bodies depth away from the stage. And following on from the discussion of tall people at the front we had a few digests ago, I (being only 1.66m) made my stand by apropriate usage of elbows and uncomprimising glares. (well, ok I'm lucky it's with reasonable DT fans and not a Slayer mob - *gulp*).

Also, I've noticed that DT fans don't seem to "hum" (smell/pong/reek) that much, despite the humid weather we've had, then again I was standing behind two rock-babes :). Boy, the last Paradise Lost concert I went to, should have brought a can of BO-odurant. Does DT encourage high standards of personal hygiene amongst their fans?

The guys really enjoyed themselves, and there was lots of fooling around on the stage. James made a quick jibe about Englands' and Scotland's World cup chances, I detected a murmur of dissent amongst the crowd - it's a sensitive point at the moment. John P. and Mike were throwing towels at each other whilst James was talking. John threw and just missed narrowly missed James. He turned around and shouted "Who threw that?". Mikey and John started pointing fingers at each other and doing the "Who?..Me?.." looks. Then Mike screamed "IT WAS JOHN MYUNG", who was on the other side of the stage :) hehehe.

During Mike's solo, he went to the front of the crowd with a drum and had some guys to play along with him. Some guy on the extreme left played really well. We gave him an appreciative cheer, so, Mike walked away in a huff and sat grumply in front of his normal kit hehehe...

Well, James was on form though it appeared at times he was strai ning, I hope their tour schedule is not taking its toll too much. John P, magic as always, Mike, an animal, just an animal, John Myung, looked young and silent as ever, and Derek was way cool looking (I can't believe some people have criticised Derek's dress sense and stage presence - he adds his own unique flamboyant style).

Mike, if you're reading this, I like the new hair-crop, but was that a few grey "tints" in the chin-stubble I noticed ;)

Sorry, for the long post, but I'm normally a lurker, and so don't have much to contribute :)

    See you all,

    Ashley.
