I just thought I would send in my experiences leading up to realizing
    the sheer brilliance of
the band I love. I would love to hear how others came to know and love
    DT as well.

I went to college in the mid 80's and followed all types of heavy metal,
    Tesla, Queensryche
Metallica, Skid Row, Bon Jovi, and all the other popular metal bands
    during that time period. I
was intrigued about a "new" band called Dream Theater. The radio
    stations played PMU quite
a bit, so I purchased I&W on cassette. I never really went past that
song and passed them off as a
1 hit type of band. I didn't get into the rest of the songs on the
cassette. In my job, I came across
a pre-release version of Awake. I listened to it but again at the time
it wasn't my cup of tea.
A year or so later, I came across a pre-release version of ACOS.
    Something must
have happened in my musical tastes or there was a calling of sorts which
drew me to this music. I absolutely loved this song. I listened to it
day and night, non-stop. These guys were amazing. I went back to I&W
and Awake and was again amazed. How did I miss this before. I waited
and waited and waited (like everyone else) for FII to finally be
released. I instantly love the cd. I saw them in concert at 1st Avenue
in Minneapolis in November. They were incredible! I also was able to
meet them. I thought I had died and went to heaven! I can't wait to
see them in August with Deep Purple

    Trial of Tears

It was a very special evening for all of us.
Thanks to everybody that attended and also to the Theater of Dreams guys
(Roots & Denis) as well as all the other fan club dudes.

It was all captured on tape (beautifully, I must add) by Kevin Shirley for the
    forthcoming Live album.
A film crew was there as well, so hopefully we will be able to include it on
    another possible long-form home video....

Tomorrow, we will also record & film the "extra long DT extravaganza" in Paris
(3 hrs, 4 hrs???) for the live album & possible home video....
I'll post a set list list for that in the days following the gig...

    Carpe Diem,
    Mike Portnoy

Of course, music is an intellectual property, like a book itself
is (think about it: you don't own a book, but only a copy of it, in the
very same way you don't own a software, or music).

In a more detailed fashion: you own the medium that carries that
intellectual property, but you don't own the intellectual work itself.
    Only the author does.

    Greetings Jam-lickers,

    > Dream Theater - Fan Club show in Rotterdam - June 22nd 1998

Ok, here's a thought. Wouldn't this show in and of itself make a great video? And here's the pitch to sell it to the record company - think about how many bands break by releasing an acoustic version of one of their songs. The Black Crowes didn't really get huge until they released that video version of "She talks to angels"... Tesla got huge publicity for that video version of "Signs"... so wouldn't it stand to reason that releasing a video version of "Take away my pain" (or hell, maybe even "Bad") would do wonders for our boys? Plus, the video footage is already shot, so production costs would be lower than for a normal video (I'm assuming). It might be a great way to get "the masses" turned on to DT. And besides, given the fact that there's an existing strong fan base, it's not like the video won't sell enough to be profitable even if any singles from it aren't hits. Just my 2 pence.

What do you think, sirs? peace, id

This is an article about the new Dave Mathews Band album in SPIN magazine. See if you notice the ACOS reference.

While "Don't Drink the Water" reveals a newfound declarative power, "Pig" offers the fullest realization of the most enduring theme in Dave Matthews's oeuvre-what he refers to as his "seize-the-day songs." This gather-ye-rosebuds-while-ye-may trope goes back to the first album's DMB army battle cry "Tripping Billies," with its chorus "Eat drink and be merry / For tomorrow we'll die." But on "Pig" he manages something surprisingly stirring and eloquent, with buoyant dynamics and William Blake-esque lyrics like "Looking at blood...deep and sweet within / Pouring through our veins...moving wine to tears." "The earlier records were more Lollipop Guild," deadpans Matthews. "This record is more Oompa Loompa."

    Thought that was interesting.

    Hi there,

I'll try to cover a few points here:

Mauricio Martinez Villarreal wrote: [..] >I know that music cd s are something "material"......but what it contains >(music), is oftentimes very "spiritual".....therefore, i kinda think that >most of the cds in my collection (or every cd out there for that matter) >are "spiritual" goods, instead of material things. Exactly! Every time somebody sees my CD-collection, they pity me for my "materialism". Sure there is some satisfaction in buying new stuff, BUT mainly for the joy of hearing/feeling new music! I consider my CDs the soundtrack of my life, and so my collection is something like a photo-album to me, full of memories and feelings.

ICED EARTH: If you like Metal (with a capital M!) check them out. Days of Purgatory might be a good start, as it is a best-of kind of 2 CD set, but rerecorded and done by their current singer. I just received their new CD "something wicked..", can't say too much about it yet, they still rock hard and did not wimp out like so many others did...

STATIC PROGRESS by Open All Night Records: I received my copy (#12) last week. Just the facts: Great sound for a bootleg; song-selection is medium-good (I miss some rarities..); packaging is great, I really like the artwork; Service/turnaround time is un-f*cking-believable. A good one - I'll be in the line for the next offerings from OAN.

Get the new Monster Magnet - Powertrip great sound for BBQ and/or getting stoned.

    Hello Ytsejammers,

I have not posted here in ages, but I thought I could help on something. Anyway, I know just a little about the Tiles. I heard it all from someone else, so this all may not be 100% accurate. They are from Detroit, I believe, and they have at least one album. It is on the label Standing Pavement. I'm not sure of the title, though (self titled maybe?).

Anyhow, if there are any jammers in San Diego who want to hang out or start a band (I play bass), drop me a line!!! Don't be fooled by the ASU address, I graduated and moved!

    Hey,

I forgot to mention what my friend said about the Tiles' sound: he said that they were very good technically (on their instruments), and that they sounded almost exactly like what you would get if Dream Theater and Rush got together. I don't know if that means 70s, 80s, or 90s Rush, though, so...

To those Jammers who attended the Fan Club only show, you lucky bastards, I have a question. Was Wait For Sleep performed in the traditional fashion, or the currently popular acoustic guitar method?

Just curious because ever since Kevin Moore left the band, every boot I have heard has WFS played non-piano type.

What is this? Slag Damon week? So what. I happen to have reasons for mentioning the dirty b word. OK, from now on, I will never refer to myself as blind again, OK I will refer to my self as visually challenged. Would that make you feel better? Oh wait, you don't want me to say that I am blind at all. OK, I am cured. :) I can see perfectly fine. Thanks for the help. If I only knew that denying my vission problem would cure me, I would've done that years ago. Now, I must go. I have a driving test to take. Can you all see me in a nice red sports convertible, driving down the NJ state turnpike, blaring New Millennium at the top of the stereo volume? Right before the inevitable crash?

Keyboards? Me? Expert? Thanks. Anyway, I would recommend any of the following, and I will give my reasons as well. Firstly, for More. I think I would have to give Take the Time or Metropolis some nods, and let's not forget Wait for Sleep. In fact, I would do Wait for Sleep first. You may also consider UAGM or LTL. That is under a glass moon and learning to live if you didn't know. From wdadu, definitely Ytsejam, and Only a Matter of time. Oh, light fuse and get away may work as well. From Awake, Space Dye Vest, 6:00 or Scarred. Now, onto the Derek years. you could try ACOS, but I think Lines in the Sand, Just let me breathe or Burning my Soul may work. Trial of Tears could be cool as well. New Millennium could work as well, but not as well for Derek. No real solos there. Anna Lee may not be a good idea, since n that song, Derek sounds too much like a regular pop pianist. Not that I am disrespecting that, because every pianist needs to be able to do that. But, that is my definitive word on this subject.

Actually Damon, it won't make me feel better if you get politically correct. You see cause then I will have to call myself "a matrimonially deficient, un-assisted Parental unit" and gawd I HATE being politically correct. It's bad enough when the homeless beggars I see in here in the Bay Area now hold up signs which say "Residentially Challenged. Need Financial Assistance" If you have no problem referring to yourself as blind, then I have no problem with you being blind. But I never think of you as Damon, my blind friend......you are just Damon to me and stay just the way you are!

Look, people. I am sorry if a fraction of you get offended by this kind of stuff. But my philosophy in life is, that if I get slagged in a public forum, I need to defend myself in a public forum, because I don't want people to get the wrong idea of something I posted. Adam took something I said out of context. he could've posted to me directly, but he didn't. He chose to keep it in the ring. Now, maybe you don't agree with this, and that slap at America and Seinfeld was totally uncalled for, but that's too bad.

Your eyes can blind you sometimes Jon, remember that. That attack was un-called for and unwarranted. No, I am not saying that Damon deserves any special consideration because he is blind. That would mean that we would need to give you special consideration because you sometimes suffer from being massively ignorant.
