Sorry if this has been around already, I've been away:

    Cut off Hardradio.com:

DREAM THEATER's Mike Portnoy told London's Rock Radio Network that the
band's current tour with DEEP PURPLE and ELP
may be their last. In addition to 20 North American dates, the band are
playing a one-off "semi-acoustic" Fan Club-only gig of old, new and cover
tunes in Rotterdam and a special 2 set, 3 hour-plus gig in Paris, both of
which will be recorded by Kevin Shirley for a new live album and possible
home video for release in the fall.

I'm about to go insane because I can't find a taped copy of the 5/9/98
Electric Factory show in Philadelphia. 'Da Man (Paul Cashman) and myself
drove just under 1700 miles in a weekend (some of my friends thought I was
insane just b/c of that) to see that show and it was the best I've ever
seen. SO, if anyone has a tape of that show I have plenty to trade.
Please get in touch with me ASAP. Thanks much...

    a) much to my orgasmic emotions, i discovered that a guitar center opened up
in carle place, long island. 'bout fucking time. gives the sam ass brigade
    some competition.

something i came across, didn't know it existed, was a 90th anniversary ibanez
jp guitar. really interesting looking. it was bluish-based, and it just
looked....like a collector's guitar. wondering if that has been discussed here
    yet?

    b) anyone know if lyrics or guitar score (tab as a last-ditch chance) for
queensryche's "last time in paris"? great song, but the guitars in the verses
are kinda mystifying me. any help would be appreciated.

Oh, this makes me wish I had the sight to pull out the original post and
annotate it. I never said that graphics should be outlawed. I just think
they slow down the Net. And frames and the like, same thing. They make
things visually appealing. if you like that, fine. All the better. But, if
you think that your pompous attitude towards a small segment of the
population that can't naivgate your pretty web site is going to fly here,
think again. I never begged for anybody's respect. If I lost yours, I am
sorry. but don't call me a whiner. I would love to trade places with you
for a month. You would be begging to have your eyesight back in five
hours. And I am being generous. Firstly, forget your pretty web site once
you are in my boat. I know, to you, we are a small insignificant bunch.
And you technically are saying that we shouldn't be surfing the web. If
you make a site inaccessible to the blind, the one handed, the deaf, or
anybody for that matter, and have no means of accommodating them, because
you don't want to be boythered, then you don't need to utter the words.
You have said so with your actions. Personally, I don't know of one thing
that I would visit your site for anyway. I didn't think the web was
supposed to be graphical. The first time I heard of the web was through a
command called, www. Text based from hell. long before Mosaic, Netscape
and ie. I mean, we're still talking Windows 3.1 here. The web is just a
means of eliminating command line stuff and unix. And I could even be
wrong on that. but what made the web great was its ease of use, not its
graphics. Look, this is way off topic, and I am tired of defending myself
to you. If I lost your respoect, I am sorry, but you don't understand what
you are talking about here. I know you never brought up blindness inyour
post, but any time a person says that they are going to use a ton of
programming techniques that will invariably make something unusable to
somebody and slags the only process that person has to access information,
you bet your ass I am going to get defensive. I think I have a right. This
is coming from a guy who has to BEG for a ride to the store. I bet you
take your car for granted just like your web.

Brandin, this book has been touched upon here, I think. i wish I could read it myself. Gotta wait until it is put into braille or something. But, I have heard it is a great book. I would urge all ytsejammers or any lover of prog rock to read it. DT takes its roots from bands like Genesis and yes and ELP and PF, so it may farther your understanding of DT's music.

I have to agree with this assessment - the Dregs are a phenomenal fusion/prog instrumental band, although much of their material may not be as "balls and chunk" as the LTE stuff. You may want to try any of Steve Morse's solo albums with "The Steve Morse Band", as they tend to be a little more rock oriented (no violin or keys [in general], just the power trio - guitar, bass, drums). You can't go wrong with any of these albums. All the songwriting is brilliant and there tends to be a pretty good variety of styles on each album. Morse usually adds a classically-inspired solo or duet to each album. Watching him play those classical guitar/bass duets live with bassist Dave LaRue was just unreal.

Note: sometimes the Dixie Dregs albums are just filed under "The Dregs".

For the most obvious Morse-ism in Petrucci's playing, just listen to the fast chromatic part of the "You Not Me" solo. That's pure Morse.

Paul, you are comparing two totally different things. If I am introduced to somebody, naturally, i do not say "Hi, I am Damon, the blind guy." I never say such things, and I know Matt wouldn't either. Maybe Matt handles his thing differently over the net. But there are so many people I have talked to over the Net who have put their foot in their mouthes and I am out front with my blindness and don't care either way. Matt chooses to handle things differently. I respect his thing. Matt is a person I have a great deal of respect for. Yes, maybe I do bring it up a lot, but that is my thing. I don't bring it up unless it needs to be brought up. Half the time, I make blind jokes and people need to understand that I am partially the victim of the joke I am making. I am not looking for special treatment. I was raised by parents who wouldn't let me or anybody else feel sorry for me. I was treated equally. i rode a bike, played soccer, bowled and did everything my brothers did, (well except drive). So, I expect no handouts. I didn't want to seem like a moocher when asking for the ride to the DT shows, I was explaining why my ass didn't have a ride. Why is that so bad?

Bear in mind, also that even in a keyboard thread, I could mention that I have difficulties tearing into most keyboards because of the displays and the more involved interfaces of the menus, but I don't. I didn't bring that up because it doesn't matter to you guys buying the machine, you have no problems with that. maybe it invalidates my opinion of synths a little, but I can comment on sounds and things like that based on what I read over the web. I am sorry that this has taken up as much space as it has in the Jam. But it is a subject I get very defensive over. There are tons of people who don't understand the nature of a handicap, regardless of the handicap. My GF's parents are the extreme of this ignorance. I know educating the world probably should not be on a music list, but it was brought up here. Boot me from the list if you have to, but I hope that I at least made a few people wiser and maybe less intimidated by this topic.

OK, Chris. I understand there are sites that blind people can't access. But, the sites you name, like sites with graphical art and such are sites and blind people wouldn't need to visit anyway. your site with musical notation is understandable. I am referring to sites like company web sites. Look, if you want to use graphics and frames, frame yourself to death. I don't care. It is a common fact that graphics take up more loading time than nongraphics sites. Hell, even look at the sites that use music backgrounds and animation. They load music, which I can fully access, but ... they take longer to load. Deaf people can't access sites like thedj.com or hardradio or liveconcerts.com. I am not advocating banning of this stuff. I am asking for some consideration. I read a post from a blind guy on a nother mailing list about how outraged he was that AOL wouldn't make their software accessible. I was offended ab it at first, but now that I think about it, why would a blind person want to use AOL? For the content? you can get the content elsewhere. Why bother! Let's be real here. I am not being overly disgusting about the idea. How hard can it be to make a site full of text and links? File downloads would be linked to the same place. HHell, I don't care if the formatting is all fucked up. But the content is there. I am not on a crusade to do away with advanced html.

Rudess/Morganstein. Great CD. It may very well be good for you. Bear in mind that Rudess/Morganstein has no guitar shredding, unless you count the pseudo-guitar sounds from his keyboard. No bass shredding either. It is a wonderful instrumental CD, though. Quite different in the fact that that music was highly composed and constructed, especially the sequenced parts. If you listen to this music, you will understand. Another CD similar to this is Black Light Syndrome which has Terry Bozio, Tony Leven, and Steve Stevens. I don't think it is as good, though. I should give it another listen though. For purely instrumental music, there is alwasy Vai, Satch, and others. You may also want to look into people like Richy Cotzen and gReg Howe. They have a combined Cd called Tilt, among others I think, that is really nice. I hope others can add to this thread.

In reference to this sci-fi thread, what happens when it is the retinat that is damaged as opposed to the rest of they eye. My blindness is caused from my retinas not my cornea or optic nerve.

Hey Jammerz!!! ProgRockBoy is officially back! I missed ya all so much that I bit the bullet and resubscribed. I may even get in a post or two a week, if the slave drivers at Guitar Center (where I have just been hired) let me out of the store for an hour or so each day. Of course, don't call me ProgRockBoy anymore. It's LiquidT, if you're on IRC. If you're not on IRC, then it's just Nick, as always. Sorry to take up so much bandwidth to say hi, but I missed all of you. (shouts out to skadz and Bafu, if he's still around)

    Later, Nick, aka LiquidT
