Hello, Thanks to James Shields and Scott Andrews. The effect stuff was quite helpful as Rocktron was high on my list of choices. The Replifex clocks in around $450 used that I've seen, so I'll hunt one of them down. The Alesis was just to tide me over till I can afford more, but maybe I'll bite the bullet. I don't use dsp distortions ever, so I'm not concerned there, my Fender has the best OD I have EVER heard: from a processor, pedal, or amp. I knew I was stretching it on the mods on separate channels. But I would just once like to play with chorus AND flange without stomping on my Ibanez BC-9! As for gigging money: if you're the main act, usually you'll get a cut of the door. If you're an opener, count on gettting a (low) flat fee. Also, make sure your friends realize that if you are getting a cut of the door, they should at least have the courtesy to pay ONCE in a while. Not to be left out of a flame war, Mike Bahr: >Here, I just get a lot of mean-spirited sarcasm most of the time, and only a little bit of e-mail >support, mostly from the better folks out there.

So if I don't support you, I'm a bad person? Yeah, right. You're the one working for Equinox.

    >The Jam is less than 5% of my business now.

Big surprise. Once bitten, twice shy?

    > I'm already back to simply being "Mike Bahr - DT fan"

Funny, the three paragraphs above this line slag nearly every other jammer by sheer generalization. If that's being a DT fan, then why do you wonder why you get flamed to death? The reason your business has dropped from the Jam is that we, as fans, are friends. We warn each other of potential trading hazards and try to keep one another from getting burned. Thus when we are burned, we "ostracize" that fan that burned us. When I was three months late on a trade and disappeared into nowhere, people were concerned about getting their material. When I came back to the Jam, I let them know it was coming within the week. But you are late on trades for months and YEARS, and parade about the Jam with irreverence to the concerns of fellow fans. You have a choice Mike: be a good businessman and a fan, or be a bad businessman and stay off the list. I'm not saying this is the choice you have to run your life by, but if you want to post to the Jam with impunity, its a choice you should make. People aren't trashing you for what you did years ago, they're trashing you for what you did last month. Recent history predicts future events. Think of it this way: has anyone seen Brian Cox lately? On a lighter note: >----------------------------------------------------------- >Used CDs are always for sale at: >http://www.flash.net/~kvill/cdsale.html >Updated regularly! >-----------------------------------------------------------

Ahem... Please be sure to check out the "D" section. There's a great album called "Awake" on sale...:) Mosh wrote: >Hey Damon:

Here's a question for all you longtime progmetal freaks..

What band(s) would you consider to be the "originator(s)" of the progmetal genre. By this I mean who was playing DT-type music before DT?

It seems to me that DT is really the first band to have melded the Rush/Yes progressive rock style with the balls and chunk of Metallica and produced intense, compelling music in the process. When I first heard DT (not to resurrect this thread), a massive "CLICK!!!" sounded in my universe as my brain said YES - THIS IS WHAT I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR WITHOUT KNOWING IT! I will literally never forget that day, and my fervor over DT has not dimished one bit in the 5+ years since.

The band must be a bit heavier than Rush (as DT is), and play more complex songs than, say, Queensryche or Iron Maiden (as DT does). Does such a band exist, or did DT truly "invent" the genre?

We all know that there are dozens of DT-like bands that have sprung up in the wake of the mother of all recordings, "Images and Words". Some of them are pale imitations, and some very creative and interesting (Symphony-X, Lemur Voice, Superior, Angra, etc). However, I think DT has been and will be recognized as the most important force of ProgMetal in the 90's.

    Any ideas? -Neil.

Yup, that the one. The one where James bitches at the annoying guy that keeps screaming in the back of the crowd. The more fun part would be if you heard, "Phwwwwwwooooooooo.... Phthud! OW! OK, one more time. This came up on irc last night. I don't receive emoticons like :). I do understand what they are, somewhat. I keep the punctuation feature in my speech program turned off so that I don't go nuts. It sounds much more natural to listen to without hearing the periods, commas and semicolons and such. Unfortunately, I miss the colon.right parentheses combo that most people use in their posts. if I flamed somebody unintentionally, I am sorry. On irc, I told everybody that if you want to use emoticons, use <g> for a smiley. most blind people use this. <grin> may also work. I hope this absolves some of the confusion.

    A quick boot review.....

I received OAN's (http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Mezzanine/9326/oan.htm) two new bootlegs, Dream Theater's "Static Progress", and Savatage's "The Age of Discovery" the other day (both are 2CD sets....and were $29 each).

Let me cut to the chase. These boots KICK ASS! Firstly, the most important thing: both have excellent quality sound. Secondly, the packaging is pretty nice (I love the pics on the Sava-disc....funny stuff). Also, both have some pretty cool setlists (DT has Scarred, Ytse Jam, ToT, Speak to Me, Lie.... etc., and Savatage has alot off of TWoM, plus Jesus Saves, This is the Time, and lots of band-wisecracking). Oh, and another thing: OAN's service is turbocharged!

Check these out! - Joe DeAngelo proud owner of Static Progress #15/150 and The Age of Discovery #12/75

I like these two threads. :)

Gigs: I hope my current band will be gigging this fall. From those I know who DO gig, I hear that prices are always negotiable once the band has established a following. A percentage of the door, a minimum amount, and even sometimes a percentage of the bar sales can be expected/obtained. It would be great if people would post their common percentages / min costs for their band to play. Chances are, Jim, you ARE getting screwed if you think you are. If you bring business to the bar, then you deserve a cut.

    > > However, the Rocktron Replifex is a real good unit. it has eq in > > it as well, so it livens up the tone so it doesn't sound so digital. This

I have used: The Chameleon (didn't like it... not flexible enough, in the actual distortion sounds), the 2101 (Digitech... the distortion wasn't too real, and it SOUNDED like a digitech), The MP2 (don't like the noise gate) and the DHP33 (not enough effects). I want to try the Intellifex (LTD or newer) the Intellipitch (Same harmony processing as the G-Force) and a couple T.C. units and Lexicon units. I use the TriAxis, and I don't fully like the pick attack... very scratchy. I need compression and eq to fix it, I think. As for costs, I expect that you could find a used Intellifex around $500. The Replifex is decent too. I don't like Digitech much. You can find a lot more if you toss in an extra hundred or two.

Yeah. We're just a mean spirited bunch. You haven't earned any of the shit you've gotten, just like I haven't, ever been more malicious than I've needed to be when responding to a post that I disagree with, right? There are no fucking martyrs. You get what you deserve. It has nothing to do with the band... it has everything to do with the way you treat people. You used to be looked up to here, because you were a person, and responded to e-mail, and you got your shit out in reasonable time. Then you got greedy, and then people started seeing through your bullshit--then you started recovering, and now it appears that you have relapsed. Write off people who ask for updates and responses, and you can expect to get burnt. It will happen with the QR people as soon as you start screwing them. When you act like a dick, you will be treated accordingly (and I know this as well as anyone). The only difference between QR fans and DT fans with regard to how they treat YOU is EXPERIENCE.

    > Here, I just get a lot of > mean-spirited sarcasm most of the time, and only a little bit of e-mail > support, mostly from the better folks out there.

Better because they suck your dick more lovingly? I think the better folks out there are the ones who look out for the rest of the jammers, not the ones who just defend me no matter what I do. I'm wrong often enough. People who step in front of the flames I deserve are just followers. Since I don't have a product to sell or a church to build, I don't need followers. You differ in that respect, preaching Equinox at one point, and having cds to sell.
