Hey there, jammers!
You'll never believe this... I was watching a new TV show the other night
entitled, THE NEW ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD and guess who was playing ROBIN
HOOD?! That's right. It was John Petrucci!
Ok, It wasn't REALLY John Petrucci, but the guy bears a STRIKING
RESEMBLANCE to him. Every jammer HAS to check this out. The episode I saw
was kind of cheesy, a la "Hercules" and "Xena", but it was hilarious to see
the spitting image of our beloved DT axemaster JP, swordfighting and
shooting arrows at bad guys!
I'd be interested to hear your reactions...
And somebody should send this to Mike Portnoy too. I think he and the guys
would get a good laugh out of it...

Ryan. There are many yes albums. Try yesStory, which is a better
compilation of yes. There is also classic yes, which is everything up
through 1979. YesStory is up to 1987 as well. But, if you can, look for
YesYears, the box set. it is the definitive yes compilation. As for live
albums, which can also be a yes compilation of sorts, pick up keys to
ascension 1 as well as YesShows and Yessongs. Yesterdays is a good
compilation of the early albums of Yes, up to about 1970, with a few
rarities and a trck from the Anderson/bruford,Wakeman,HoweSquire lineup,
and America is a musthave. As for albums themselves, pick up The Yes
Album, Fragile, and Close to the Edge first. Then, you can follow up with
Relayer, Tales from Topographic Oceans, Going for the One, and Tormato.
then you can get Drama, 90125, Big Generator, Union, and Talk. Follow
those up with Anderson Bruford Wakeman and Howe. (BTW, the live ABWH
album, an evening of yes music plus is another good compilation live
album, if you can deal with the abwh tracks from the anderson bruford
wakeman ablum.)Finally,g o back for the Yes and Time and a Word first
albums. They are my least favorite. Do it in that order and you should be
happy.

You know, there are at least three elements in "Fragile" and other old prog (when I say prog I mean prog rock -- when I mean prog metal I'll write prog metal) albums that may make these albums be difficult to get into: the Hammond organs, Rick Wank^H^Hkeman and some of the vocal harmonies.
Some of them get on my nerves. And I really *MEAN* that. But once you come to tolerate those vocals and those organs, you can enjoy some of the older albums. IMO, "Fragile" is worth getting just for "Mood for a Day" (isn't that song absolutely beautiful -- I find myself mesmerized by that song every time I listen to "Fragile") and "Roundabout". And "Five Percent for Nothing", and "Cans and Brahms", and "We Have Heaven", and "Heart of the Sunrise", and "Long Distance Runaway" and... :-)
Anyway, if you don't mind getting a very soft album, do check out "Ashes Are Burning", by a band called Renaissance (thanks Bernardo Pulgar for helping with this band). Another band worth listening is Camel (one of the main influences of Opeth -- WOOOOOHOOOOO!!!!). Very soft stuff, with little Hammond organs (I said *little*) and some flute playing that is worth the price of the admission...
Oh, the new Yes "Keys to Ascention II" has some cool studio tracks (some may say they are popier, but fuck -- you listen to the music for yourself, not to show the other people you listen to it, I hope :-) ) and this album sounds like an "improved" Yes, to meet the 90s standard. Worth checking just for "Mind Drive" (by far, my favourite Yes song -- too bad they didn't play it here in Brazil this past May). And to people who think old men can't play rock'n'roll: "You are DEAD WRONG!"
Anyway, I must say that I like prog rock much more than prog metal or even metal (black metal, death metal, thrash metal, melodic heavy metal, pink metal, blue metal, red metal, green metal etc, etc, etc :-) ).
That's the opinion of a close-minded, politically incorrect, but very sincere fan, Roger...

Ahem...well here goes my two cents.
I can't believe that no one has mentioned Rush!!!! Now I know that Rush is hardly "metal" compared to todays bands but back in the early days that was how they were always decribed.
Rush is without a doubt "prog". Their lyrics are some of the most intellegent and thought provoking I have ever heard. Their music is very intricate and moving. Rush's concept albums are far beyond QR's Operation Mind Crime.
Rush is without a doubt in my mind the band that started it all.

Have you heard "Talk"? It's actually quite a bit more prog then 90125. But it sounds like you know them pretty well. I think what my problem is, is that I love earlier progrock, but I'm more of a Kansas or Alan Parsons Project man. I like Genesis and & stuff, but I guess Fragile was too classical-oriented (as was pointed out to me) and I wasn't listening to it that way. I'll relisten to it, but I doubt it'll make any difference. I don't like to listen to music and say "Well, it's good for the time it was done", I like to listen to music and say "That is good".

I don't know - I'm holding off until I read more reviews. The samples on the Chromakey site seemed to be about ten different versions of 'Space Dye Vest'. Not really, but it did seem very much in that same type of tone, only with Mark Zonder on VERY low-key drums and a singer (Kevin) who has that same David Gilmore single-octave voice.
I'm not saying it doesn't sound good (I really liked the clip of 'Oh'), but there's a lot more right around the corner (Explorer's, Dali, an actually affordable version of Enchant's 'Time Lost', etc. etc.) that's competing for my music dollar.

Ahoy,
As far as my current setup, we'll just leave my amp out of it because I use other people's amps for playing with a band (I have a Fender 2x10" combo, so it doesn't get as loud as I would like it to get sometimes). Right now I'm still using the good ol' Digitech RP-1 until I can get an RP-20 (which might be sooner than expected since the display is beginning to malfunction on the RP-1 after 5 years of use and abuse - even though it doesn't affect the sound).

Bah. Why the hell send it to the jam four times? We get your point. :P You flambouyant little cross-dressing garden weasel manufacturer you!
But he does have a point. I wayched that show's first episode and about shit my pants. (Alright not really, I just pissed milk). The guy who plays Robin Hood does look frighteningly similar to our favorite axeman. :) Especually now that JP got the locks trimmed, their hair's about the same length. It is kinduv groovy.
heheh. I tell you what, that's the last time I ask the jam for help getting into a band. :P I'm still completely lost as to what to get. So far the consensus leans to Talk and Fragile, so I'll probably start on them. You guys are nuts. But at least we're talkin' about music so that's cool. :) Thanks for the help though. heheh.

Now that that's taken care of...
I got my Age of Impact today. Would have had it last Tuesday, but I'm lazy. <G> Anyways, I don't want to give too much away (there are no secrets, but I don't want to spoil anything) so I will be general. This album is not just guitar heavy, or keyboard heavy. This is probably the first really cool and listenable "PROG-HEAVY" (that is "Filled with the tangy juice of the progtarine") of the year. The album is unified, with recurring themes, musicianship, time changes, tempo changes, originality, and applesauce. IMPORTANT: When you listen to this album for the first time, WAIT until you have a full hour or so to soak in the WHOLE thing. It would be immensely disjointed if you just listen to the beginnings of these amorphous tracks. They all lead directly into each other, and the majority of the album is something you WANT to hear. Focus on the lyrics when there are lyrics, and the solos when there are solos, and you'll get a great first listening experience. The album is Magna Carta-style produced. It's not that well done, but the music makes up for it. SUPER-WARNING: As Calvin told me (and may have told the jam... I don't recall)... this album is VERY Magellan. It has very similar harmonies, vocal ideas, etc, but now it has Bozzio on drums, and amazing guitar and keyboard work. Sheehan doesn't even wank off on the album! He just plays good bass, with one conservative solo. More likely, this will bridge the gap to help some of you like Magellan than turn you off. Everyone on this list will want the album. All the Kevin Moore fans will hear some sick-ass playing from Sherinian that many didn't think he could (or would?) do. Matt Guillory will screw your head on backwards. Petrucci ... well... let's just say Petrucci is Petrucci, and will not in the least bit disappoint Petrucci fans like myself. This makes up for what I missed in LTE (which I still can't put into words). I would have liked some variety in the drummers and bassists too, but Sheehan ain't bad, and you don't get BETTER than Bozzio... only equal. So, for now: Gripes - James Murphy, while being a talented player, and while having fine note choice, lacks dynamics, like so many of his contemporary "metal" players. The production is a bit murky, and the drums aren't loud enough for my tastes. Upside - EVERYTHING else. Again: DO NOT just listen to it casually flipping through intros on the first listen. Wait until you can soak it up (a long drive, an hour of reading/relaxing, etc). /me waits for Dali's and SG's new album!
Go Home and Practice!

I wonder if this is the same guy who shows up at every WWF wrestling event. I swear, there's this one wrestling fan who always shows up on every WWF TV show each week and he looks very much like Petrucci.
