...and, as everone knows, Drama is one of my favourite albums of
all time. Yes, it's the only album w/out Jon Anderson - but Trevor Horn
does a VERY good job at handling the vocals. The 3 songs on the album
that *really* stand out are Machine Messiah, Does It Really Happen? and
Tempus Fugit.
Definatly a classic album that's been overlooked by many of the
Yes community. Keep in mind also that Geoff and Steve formed Asia after
this lineup broke up, so if you dig the early Asia material, you'll REALLY
love this album.

Just wanted to pass the word along:
Friday night (July 3rd), 3 bands are playing in Fort Washington,
Pa (A suburb of Philly). They are: The Dark Ether Project, Always
Almost (ex-Echolyn), and Anekdoten. What's cool about this show - since
Anekdoten's from Sweden, they're only playing 2 gigs in the COUNTRY! If
you don't know "what they sound like" here's a clue: Take King Crimson
(Red era) and Nirvana. Put them in a blender. Add a eigth of crack.
Blend nicely. :) That's Anekdoten.
The price? 15 bucks - and the show starts promptly at 7pm.
Anyway, D-Man is making the trip up from Williamsburg for the
show, so IF people from the Philly (or surrounding) areas wanna go and
hang out, drop me an email. I'm sure we can set something up (espically
if you need directions).
I hope to see some of you on Friday!

For the last two weeks some of us have been operating under the assumption
that tickets for the DT/DP/ELP show on 8/12 in Camden, NJ go on sale on
their respective Saturdays, and for the past two weeks TicketMasturbators
say, "we have no listing for that event/day/whatever."
Does anyone know, REALLY, when the tickets for the Camden show go on sale?

I must agree with this. Definitely not prog, but very very cool.
Fave tracks are the Chagall Geuvara tune "Tale of the Twister" and
Henry Rollins/Bad Brains cover of "Kick Out the Jams." :)
I found a copy of I&W on CD for $5 the othyer day at a local used
store. Might need to pick that up to replace my recently skipping
copy.
Is ther esomewhere I could get details about Powermad? I want to go,
but don't know much about it (other than the pretty kickass sounding
lineup :).

I just wanted to echo the comments I have been hearing about this Savatage
CD from Open All Night Records. The sound quality is pretty good with
minimal crowd noise, especially the bonus tracks from a Japanese DWD show!
The turn-around time on this CD was incredible, especially considering that
they are located in France and I am in Texas! It took about two weeks
turn-around from when I sent them money to when i recieved the CD. That's
pretty incredible considering the alternatives out there. And one other
thing, their artwork is the best I have ever seen on a boot CD! The front
cover looks like it could be an official release. This CD is a must buy for
any good Savatage fan!

If you like most of the songs from that Yes Highlights CD
then it would probably be hard for you to go wrong on choosing a
CD. Nonetheless, I'll give you my opinions on where you should
start:
- For "classic" Yes, I'd recommend "Close to the Edge",
"Fragile" and "The Yes Album". I found it harder to
get into "Relayer" and "Tales From Topographic Oceans"
because they're less melodic and TFTO tends to wander
too much for my taste.
- "Going for the One" is good. It's where Yes starts
changing their style with the songs being a bit more
condensed. "Awaken" is a wonderful prog song from that CD.
I'd recommend waiting on "Tormato" and "Drama" until
you've heard some of the other classic Yes albums.
Those two are divergent from the earlier style.
- For "mid-period" Yes, which is more pop oriented, I'd
recommend 90125. I really like that album though many
"classic" Yes fans don't. "Big Generator", "Union" and
"Talk" are OK, but I don't enjoy them as much.
- I really like both Keys to Ascension albums, but of course
you can get most of the live tracks on the "classic" Yes
albums. The studio tracks from both of those CDs are quite
good and reminiscent of "classic" Yes.
- I don't like "Open Your Eyes" (their newest CD)
unfortunately so I can't recommend it.

Thanks to those of you who've been giving reviews of the
Explorer's Club "Age of Impact" CD. You've really whet my appetite --
I'm a fan of Magellan so I've been looking forward to this one for
a while.
I have two questions for you:
1) How did you get the CD? Did you get a promo copy or did
you order it from Magna Carta directly? If the latter, how
did you order it?
2) While everyone's been reviewing the prog aspects of the
music, I've yet to see mention of the vocals. The vocals
usually end up making or breaking a CD for me. So, what did
you think of them? Were they powerful? Melodic? Are there
many harmonies?

If we in the San Francisco Bay area are lucky, maybe Enchant will put on a show or two in the near future. (They're from the Concord area, I think.) I managed to pick up a couple of copies of "Time Lost" last summer for $15 a piece at their shows. Maybe Dali's Dilemma and Enchant will play some local shows together ? :)

Well, my answer was Queensryche. But I was talking strictly about the popularization of the term "prog metal". I did mention Rush as an influence, and I agree that that Rush is the single biggest originator (and influence) for "prog metal". Damn, Rush influenced everyone. The pm term was just never used back then. At that time, "prog rock" was Camel, ELP, etc. Rush was "hard rock", and also fell under the term "metal". Now that "prog metal" is popular, they certainly WOULD have fallen into that category too. But they have lost the "metal" since then...(Ok, I admit it, "metal" is such a broad category that almost anyone can fall into it.)
