'Sympathy' was a single Marillion released with their "Best Of..."
collection a few years back. The song is originally done by a 70's group
called Rare Bird (those who listened to one of my YtseJam Radio shows got
to hear it ;) and was done very tastefully. My personal preference was for
the original...
This really isn't a good example of what Marillion sounds like because it's
not their own material. Try one of the their CDs and judge for yourself
though... Anyone I've ever loaned a Marillion CD to has threatened not to
give it back... ;)
Is there a second part to the single? Of course! Information below:
EMI: CD MARIL 16
Sympathy (03:30 - Album Version)
Kayleigh (04:07 - Acoustic Version)
I Will Walk on Water (04:08 - 5" Mix)
EMI: CD MARILS 16 - Release 18-MAY-92
Sympathy (03:30 - Album Version)
Kayleigh (04:04 - Live Version)
Dry Land (04:56 - Live Version)
Best to you all...

I received Blind Guardian's "Nightfall in Middle Earth" yesterday from
Music Blvd.
They had two Japanese editions available, and I ordered the $24.99 one
with "special edition" packaging and earlier release date, or whatever
(with the two bonus tracks).
It came with two liners, one black/white in Japanese (looks like half is
lyrics, and the rest....the story?)
The other liner begins with lyrics (in English), and the last half of
the book (6 pages) is in German.
But it doesn't appear that it's a German repeat of the lyrics, since
they're written in paragraph format, it appears that it's the story?
Anybody know if the German and Japanese parts are the story or
something? If so, it's kinda disappointing that it's not also in
English. If so, is this part (the story or whatever) available
anywhere? I don't think it's on their page or anything......
Oh, by the way- from what I've heard so far, it pretty much kicks ass!
(I like the story/speech tracks, too!)
Thanks,
- Joe DeAngelo

Damn! Who can get ahold of that song! Neil Schon is the King of Tasty
Leads! And Geoff Tate is...Geoff Tate. Too bad that didn't work out.
Is Queensryche history now? Tate looking, DeGarmo gone?
I was hoping that QR could pick up a keyboard player in place of
DeGarmo for the next release. I have an idea who could do it... That
would breath some new life into the old Ryche! (Make it a 2 disc
concept album)
And Journey looking for a singer? Better keep that quite. A certain
KJLB might decide to take a sabatical from DT and try out...
Pondering the possibilities, BH

I got to thinking yesterday when Mike so kindly posted the set list and
very good news about the 2 CD set (push for 3! Yeah, a petition! ^_^)...
well, I got to thinking, and I figured, why not try the studio versions
(where available) to test out my new carousel changer and make a mix tape
of it? I didn't even have to come up with the order of the tracks! ^_^
Mike, I must say, you picked a wonderful variety of songs, and, with very
slight tweaking, it makes for 2 very intensely cool 90-minute tapes.
Tape 1
Just Let Me Breathe
Burning My Soul
Voices
Under A Glass Moon
Lines In The Sand
Ytse Jam
Scarred
Take The Time
Anna Lee
Take Away My Pain
Trial of Tears
Tape 2:
The Mirror
Caught In A Web
Lie
Hollow Years
Peruvian Skies
Pull Me Under
Perfect Strangers (from ACOS disc)
Metropolis Pt. 1
Learning to Live
ACOS (all)
I moved a couple tracks around for continuity's sake (the biggest moves
occured on Tape 2, more by accident than design), and added Perfect
Strangers (a wink and nod to the Nightmare Cinema days -- and since James
overdubbed vocals, it could be considered a "live studio" track ^_^), but
otherwise, the "concert" feel is there. Tape 1 rocks nadz, and makes a
great driving tape, as well as a good tape to get guys into DT. Tape 2,
side A is a little more commercially minded, but side B has a whopping 3
epics back to back to glorious back. Again, a good two-sided attack at
getting a friend into DT.
Mike, you picked 'em wonderfully. All hail Mixmaster Mike.

Does this CD have a song called "Sympathy" that is mostly
acoustic? If so, I know what you're talking about. That's not
really a good example of what Marillion sounds like. Marillion has
two phases, one with a vocalist called Fish (which I prefer) and
one with a vocalist named Steve Hogarth. "Sympathy" is sung by
Steve Hogarth and is more acoustic than most Marillion.
The earlier Marillion (with Fish as vocalist) has a bit
more of an agressive style. I'd recommend trying "Clutching at
Straws" or "Misplaced Childhood".
Do not expect hard rock or metal. Marillion does not have
that kind of sound. But, they are a good progressive band and are
worth trying.
Good luck.

Oh yeah! How could I forget, I wrote a long review and didn't mention
the drums or lyrics...
Excellent, subtle drumming by Mark Zonder.
Excellent, obscure lyrics by Kevin Moore. I have always loved the
first-person, dream-like perspective of Kevin's lyrics.

(But hey, I loved the lyrics on Voivod's Nothingface and Dimension
Hatross. I really enjoy the obscure, confused and unusual lyric
styles. Now that I think of it, aren't those Voivod recordings both
"concept" albums? Anyway I highly recommend them both. Put them in the
category of "Progressive Cyber Thrash Metal")

This is odd, considering that New Millennium is so long, and not slated as
sa single. However, I won't knock it. I wish I could get that station
here. Wasn't Peruvian skies supposed to be a single? I think that would
sound nice mixed with a metalica song.

Firstly, I don't think KJLB would fit in Journye, just like Tate didn't. Besides, Journey has found a singer. Next, I know of a keyboardist that could work in Queen's Ryche. I'll give you a hint. He is blind. :)

I'll be one of the first to call Zonder a god. No question. But if you're looking for proof of this, I don't think Kevin's stuff is the right place. It's low-key - all of it. I suppose Kevin and Zonder a friends, and Zonder sounds better than a drum machine ever could, but this ain't Fates and he at least has the sense to know it.

Damon was subtle as a brick:
>Next, I know of a keyboardist that >could work in Queen's Ryche. I'll give you a hint. He is blind. :)
Wow Damon...I never thought that Stevie Wonder would be a good fit for QR, but after thinking about it, it would take QR in a whole new direction. 8:o)
Actually it's good that Journey has someone rather unknown (Steve Augeri ex-Tall Stories) to take over the voice duties. Tate and LaBrie have already established their vocal print with their repsective bands and switching over to another band, especially trying to fill the shoes of Steve Perry and his unique vocal style would be a disaster. Tate with journey would sound like Tate with Journey...not as Journey the band!
my 10 cents....it's payday and I haven't paid the rent yet, so I got a few extra pennies to toss in!

Stevie Wonder would do pretty good in 'Ryche... can't you hear him going off with souldful background for Surgical Strike or Revolution Calling? Awe...some. ^_^

Dammit! Dammit! I got this nanoseconds after I hit send on *my* smartass reply involving Stevie Wonder and a bunch of misplaced metaphors and song titles (entering spreadsheet data all day for $10.50 an hour is nice, but oh-so-brainbendingly boring... I lost my mind at 10am today)
