    LISTEN EVERYBODY:

]From the drummer that gave such a good first impression--

I am not a Wingnut Malmsteen fan. I don't really care for his stuff
that much. I do have a couple of albums of his, and I like some of his
lead stuff, and yes it does get very repetitive.

I personally think Yngwie is an arrogant asshole, but I still respect
the fact that he is very good at what he does.

The reason I posted that annoying bit about Malmsteen was because:

Music is everything, man. I know I'm just a "drummer"(never mind the
fact that I also play keyboards and have been playing out in bars and
clubs for the past six years or so).

I think that you should be glad that someone is praising Malmsteen
rather than praising Snoop Doggy Dogg.

Taht's why i posted that message- because music is there for people to
enjoy it, and for the lucky few that get to express it. So why give
someone shit just because they happen to like an accomplished guitarist
    other than John Petrucci?

Despite what you may think I doubt if any jammers on here are illiterate
    or need
to see things twice before they get through our thick skulls.
Just because JP says it's good doesn't mean that it is, does it ?
For instance if he said that Spice Girls were in his top ten bands
    should
we all rush out and buy it and like just because JP does ?
If you take your logic then, if JP told us all to go take a long run off
    a short bridge/peir/jetty, we all would ?

In no particular order (except Becker is #1)

    Jason Becker - Perpetual Burn
Marty Friedman - Don't let the "I'm Stoned" instructional video fool ya.
Tony MacAlpine - Start with Maximum Security
Cacophony - I agree, the singer did more harm than good
Racer X - Don't care for the songs, except YRO (Yngwie Rip Off) and Scarified,
but these two justify the purchase. Scarified is better.
Craig Goldy - Insufficient Therapy, haven't found too many people who agree
with me on this one, but this is my list not "too many people"'s.
Haji's Kitchen - Very good songs, very good solos, very good.
James Murphy - ah, I like it. a lot.

I'll stop there. There are others I like, but not as much as the above.
Looking at the other lists posted, these pretty much mirror others, except the
Craig Goldy. Others hate it, I love it. You should hear Craig's unreleased
stuff. Pure genius. Don't expect Dio songs.

I posted earlier that I have never cared for the drums on Satriani albums.
BUT that has been the only fault I could find with Satch. Now that I hear
Manu is on the new album, I can't wait to get it. See, Satch read my posts and
listened to me. Before you send your emails, ah never mind. If you are that
gullible (where's my Encyclopedia Webstanica), send away.

    Ahoy,

According to the official Queensryche page's news section,
updated yesterday, QR has a list of song titles of their next album that
will be posted on the page when the band gives the webmaster permission to
do so. Also, the "mystery guitarist" replacing Chris DeGarmo has been chosen
and working with the band for some time now. The announcement will be made
as soon as the band has all of the "final details" worked out. Keep checking
    www.queensryche.com for the updates!

Yeah, Jason Becker without a doubt is the greatest guitarist of all time. Technically I dont know of anyone that can match him, and musically he's damn near unmatchable as well. His second album brings this to the forefront much more than his first, it was too esay to just be blown away by his playing skills to really spend alot of time thinking about what he wrote.

Then again there must be a few million notes on Perpetual Burn, and i can not listen to the CD for a few years at a time and when i put it back on, I still remember all of em. I think it means something if you can remember a song that well.

If only I could play em some day :)

So i've had this love/hate relationship with the kick ass JP solo in TTT for a while now. I spent all of spring break my senior year of highschool picking it out (i was house sitting for my girlfriends parents) and i thought i had it down. Then i got the tab book for I&W and saw that he was playing it slightly differently, but i was 90% correct. Anyhow. Im playing this thing, and just when you're done with the first part, there's a minute little pause, and then he pulls off the same incredible sounding lick again with a little twist on the ending. GRrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Im kicking myself repeatedly for never building up my pinky finger. Given that I can *almost* pull off the solo without using it at all, I wonder what I could do if i knew what the hell to do with that 4th digit on my left hand.

    Aww well :)

OK, OK, I have really had enough of this YNGWIE bashing etc.etc.etc.

I will go on record as saying that I STILL don't know how to pronounce his first name so if anyone of you assholes know how and is willing to share that information with me please do so.I first heard him on the Alcatrazz album and thought he was excellent. But now he is wealthy and arrogant so I now hate his guts....which brings me back to his name...How damn arrogant he must be to have such a unpronouncable first name.

BTW Deep Purple's web page has tour information about DT...no venues yet but if I remember correctly the US tour is Sept-Oct 98. Now I can only hope they will come to Portland Oregon so I can see them. Imagine Steve Morse and JP backstage arguing about how to pronounce "YNGWIE".

Also much THANKS to MIKE PORTNOY. The fan club Christmas CD is GREAT. The beginning has a "parody" of the beginning of Pink Floyd's "Money".....you know the cash register effects at the start of the song....you can tell the guys had fun recording FII.

There are some assholes out there that don't like the CD that much and wish there was some concert material on it....( I won't mention names cause that would probably get MARK METZGER in trouble).

You can tell Mike went through a lot of time and trouble to get the material for the CD and I now challenge MARK METZGER to go up to Mike Portnoy after the next concert he attends and tear Mike a new asshole for not putting more "cool" stuff on the CD.

That's it for now. Did I mention that I think YNGWIE is an asshole?

Peace from Oregon Warren P.S. The name MARK METZGER is a made up ficticious name and has no relationship at all to the MARK METZGER that posts on this jam from time to time. If you know how to pronounce what's his name's first name please don't e-mail me privately...just waste some jam bandwidth and let EVERYONE know how to say it correctly.

He has more than 10 albums out... various discs released in various countries. There are two called Bucketheadland, I believe, and two called Giant Robot, and one on a different label where he uses the BAND name Giant Robot (and the album is self titled), 2 Death Cube K (anagram for Buckethead) albums, 3 Praxis studio albums, one Praxis live album, one cd with Jonas Hellborg... 3 or 4 with Bootsy or with Laswell in different projects... numerous soundtrack appearances... he's available at just about any record shop.

    > Has anyone checked out Black Light Syndrome.....I knew that Bozzio was > Great..and I knew that Levin was Great.....and I Knew that Stevens was good > but I didn't realize he was that good

Steve Steven's is completely awesome. He shreds some just plain unbelieveable chops on that one cheesy Vince Neil album.

    > Buckethead. > faster than any human. :)

His picking is derived from his lessons with Paul Gilbert. He's around Gilbert's speed, and he uses a lot of delay and effects to make it sound funky. He's also got some awesome tapping licks. I've been a fan of his since I saw his first Guitar Player column. I wouldn't call him the fastest... there's always someone coming out who is faster than everyone else. I'd say it's between Lane, Impelliteri, Bellas, Stump, and Batio right now... and the battle rages on. Speed alone is a shallow goal, though.

    > From: Matej Grginic <matej@stones.com> > Subject: Petrucci and Malmsteen > > Last couple digests were getting kinda pathetic so I just HAD to > post this. I`m wondering how long will it take before people will > realise that u CAN NOT judge guitarists and tell this one is better, > this one sucks, this one is the best...

Well, I agree with your sentiment, but consider the fact that we're mostly talking about terms of technique. Those who say that Yngwie can play circles around Clapton are referring to the fact that he's faster. Those who say that Petrucci couldn't play an Yngwie solo, are talking about complexity of technique. And as you must well be aware, technique is something that you CAN judge in terms of good/better/best. It's just extremely important to not make technique the ONLY thing you judge guitar playing by.

    > I`m not gonna waste words on Petrucci..he is the god of all guitar > gods, but u still can`t say he`s the best guitarist that ever lived. > I can`t imagine a thing that Petrucci plays and Vai couldn`t...and > the other way around.

Actually, if you want to get nit picky, I don't think Vai could pull off the Erotomania solo without a good deal of practice (you'll notice if you listen to Vai that he rarely meanders about 3 note per string, string skipping licks) and I doubt Petrucci could nail :Fire Garden Suite" without at least as much practice. This just fits with your point though, that every musician is different, and you can't judge which is BETTER. Vai has techniques that Petrucci can't touch, and Petrucci has at least twice the precision that Vai has... but that's because they focus on completely different facets in their music.

Well, it's pretty common knowledge that Petrucci was hugely influenced by Malmsteen. The old solo in ACoS was like a friggin' tribute to Yngwie (which is probably why they deleted it... not wanting to beat a dead horse with all of the Yngwie style solos everyone else has done). And no one is justified in saying that Yngwie isn't a good guitarist... but there is indeed a problem with calling him a great songwriter, when he repeats the same songs over and over again. He needs to branch out and touch on some Jazz or some Fusion... maybe learn some fingerpicking acoustic stuff... (these are just wild and random suggestions... ) or do something like that, so he can try out some different styles and learn some new methods and theories. IMO, the best things Yngwie has done are his first 2 albums, and the beautiful rendition of Leviathan on the Guitar World cd... loaded with feeling on that version... the one on the Fire and Ice album pales in comparison.
