Well, one of the first commandments of mailing lists is not to
start top 10 lists, but I think that we have enough maturity and
discerniment so that we can start a little one (of course, the difference
is that we won't -- or at least, shouldn't -- do things like "meeeeee 2"
or "diz suxxxx").
With that said, let me express the fact that before I listened to
Dream Theater I was a huge fan of "that" band and thought that the maximum
trilogy of heavy metal was composed by "Ride the Lightning", "Master of
Puppets" and "...And Justice for All".
I still think that "...And Justice for All" is one of my top 10
albums (indeed, it's one of my top 3 all-time favorites). But I think that
I woulnd't have much bands to fill the other slots, if it weren't the
contact with Dream Theater.
Let's see... These are some of my favourite bands that I knew by
intermedium of Dream Theater (be it because other Dream Theater fans
recommended me or because these bands were influences to Dream Theater):
Opeth, Yes, Jethro Tull, ELP, Therion, Genesis, Gentle Giant, Kansas,
The Trans Siberian Orchestra (ok, I know it's a parallel project, but
WFT?), Cynic... And many, many others.

hello all!
a few jams ago, somebody wrote that kjlb's former band winter rose rereleased their album, and gave a short review. I liked what it said, and decided to try to find the album. However, my local record stores stated that it did not exist (probably out of print). does anybody know where i can get a copy of this? private email, please, to save precious bandwidth...
Apparently required yngwie content: I believe it is pronounced "ING-vay".

<sarcasm _on_> Wow, I love it when people don't have a sense of humor and post something like the excerpt above. I appreciate posts like this. <sarcasm _off_>
For a second, I thought that since Graham was pointing out mistakes that you thought were ridiculous to point out, I was going to make a note that the phrase should be "your and everybody else's time", not "your's and everybody else's time".
But, then, I realized that I would be wasting your time if I didn't have an idea to share with people, so here's my idea:
FRENCH DT JAMMERS!!! If any of you would be so gracious as to acquire one of those French DT Promo CDs for me, can you email me privately and we can set up a deal? I have some goodies you might be interested in for that CD. ------------------------------------------------------------------ WarrenDW@aol.com posted in Jam#3588: >There are some assholes out there that don't like the CD that much >and wish there was some concert material on it....( I won't mention >names cause that would probably get MARK METZGER in trouble).
Ok, I'm going to have to defend Mark Metzger here. Sure, Portnoy put a lot of time and effort into the CD, but that doesn't mean that Mark shouldn't be allowed to dislike it. If I were to pick between excerpts from the FII Studio Sessions or a disc of live material, I'd have to pick the live material because the music would matter more to me than how DT ended up writing FII.
You shouldn't be such a prick in taking a cheap shot against Mark. He has a right to his own opinion, and if he doesn't like it - fine. Let him not like it. Grow up and move on with your life instead of trying to shove your opinion down people's throats. I'm sure he appreciates the effort that Mike put into the CD, but he would prefer live material.
I'm not one who disagrees with Mark. I would rather have live material too. But, that doesn't mean I don't appreciate what Portnoy did for us. It was DT's "Christmas gift" to us; like most Christmas gifts, upon opening it, you wish that you could trade it in for something better, but you keep it because you appreciate the time and effort that person put into getting that gift into your hands. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
Alright, that's all I have to say about the last jam.
Wow, I've received a total of 38,148,193 jams in the last 48 hours. I think that's a new record.
Later, Bogie

Well, it sure would make it easier to fit more Metallica, Rush and Ozzy now wouldn't it? But it doesn't really matter cause I have a 100 disc carousel and its all in there already. But if I needed to add something that wasn't in there already, I would need a little more Floyd, some Faith No More, some Satriani, and for shitz and gigglez, throw in some Big Wreck. That would work.

I realize that I'm really old with these comments, but I just thought I'd share my opinion of this CD with everyone.
I have 3 Megadeth CDs: Countdown to Extinction , Youthanasia, and Cryptic Writings. Granted CTE is a GREAT CD, I still think that Cryptic Writings is better. I definitely like this one best as compared to the other 3 CDs.
BTW, I had to return Hidden Treasures, cause I just didn't like it.....

The answer to that may lie in an interview from an old GP issue i recently read: He composes all his music away from the guitar. I was truly impressed by that statement since thats not what you usually expect from solo acoustic players.

Thanks for the tip mate, I should have known better than to slip in an attempted joke with some one who has an upper lip so stiff that one could launch F1-11 from it. I don't even waste my own time looking for typo's, I spotted an obvious one and made fun of it, I also pulled the piss out of myself by putting in a typo of my own and by putting in the obligitary **:)** so I was sure it wouldn't be taken as seriously as you did. I suggest you: a. read things a couple of times before you jump to the obvious wrong conclusions. b. understand that something that contains a smiley :) means somewhere in the message there is humour and no anger/agro is intented. c. if all this fails I urge you to go forth and multiply.

>So why give someone shit just because they happen to like an accomplished guitarist >other than John Petrucci?
Are you really so dumb as to need to have this explained? You are on a Dream Theater mailing list. When you write an email that says, among other things, "Yngwie probably knows more about music and theory than any of the FUCKERS that bash him put together times ten" you are ASKING for a royal flaming.
And there are people here that bow to Petrucci because of his speed, but more importantly because of his songwriting. So when you write "On a side note that is related, why don't you settle this argument by asking John Petrucci to play even half of a rippin-ass Malmsteen solo, and I promise you, he wouldn't come close at all" we just laugh at you because of your apparent ignorance.
THEN you say "I am not a Wingnut Malmsteen fan." You just stated that you thought Malmsteen was a better player than Petrucci! Where does that put Petrucci, and therefore Dream Theater, if you are not a "Wingnut Malmsteen fan?" I think it is YOU that does not deserve to be a Dream Theater fan.
So dont cower in your corner just cuz you fucked up. You have your reputation man, dont even think we are going to forget the assholery you gave us for the first 2 days of your ytselife. Whenever your name pops up on the screen, we will think "Oh, lets see what the newbie dumbshit has to say now, this should be good."
It wouldnt have been this way if you hadnt opened your mouth SO early and SO wide. You have your personality, so stick with it and make us laugh, cuz we will no longer listen to anything you say, not because we are assholes or ignorant or closeminded, but because you have set your reputation with us in stone.
To extend my school analogy, once a class fuckup, always a class fuckup.
Happy jammin!

LONG DISCLAIMER: Before I have fun, let me just say that despite all the negativity directed towards giving attention to specialties (i.e. Van Damme's high kicks, Mariah Carey's range, who the fastest guitarist is, etc.) I actually enjoy comparisons of skill and find it interesting to see who does what the best. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with taking a general art form (guitar playing) apart and analyzing its individual elements, then seeing who is the master of each element AS LONG AS you can stay in the "better/worse" or "more/less" modes and not cross the line into equating the mastery of a specialty with words like "best." 'Cause that's where the mud- slinging starts.
Good: Ansel Adams displays a BETTER command of black and white contrast than Mark Seliger. Bad: Ansel Adams is a BETTER photographer than Mark Seliger because of his command of black and white contrast. Worse: Ansel Adams is the BEST photographer.
Too many people find an aspect they greatly admire (such as alternate picking) in a guitarist and focus on it, then end up calling the lord of that particular technique "the best," when in actuality that guitarist can only be called "the favorite." It would be nice if titles like "the best pinch- harmonics getter" were used, but they rarely are because obsessive guitarists never step back and see that they're only giving attention to a minor detail in a spectrum of techniques. I still think Pete Sampras is the #1 tennis player in the world because of his overall skill, and he has nothing to fear from Mark Philippoussis stealing his crown with an arsenal consisting of a 140mph serve and little else.
> From: AEllis1222 <AEllis1222@aol.com> > Subject: re: YNGWIE > > And by the way, Yngwie is not the fastest, Joe Stump is!
There are schools of speed, but determining the fastest is just about impossible. There's quickness like Vai and Satch, which is mighty quick. Playing along with these guys would take a few years of practice, but they're doable. (note: the definition of "guitar-playing speed" must be a mixture of what many guitarists can do in a single grand comparison, no definition of a personal skill can stand alone, there must be CONTRASTS to arrive at truth. in order to be considered "fast" you'd better be doing things other guitarists can't. does that sound like reasonable criteria? not slamming Satch or Vai here.)
There's a notch up from that area of skill (speed-wise only) which is Yngwie Malmsteen, Joe Stump, or Paul Gilbert, guys who do a lot more speed-soloing than Vai or Satch and hence are more known for that specialty. It also makes a difference to me when I listen to Paul's solo from "Live Extreme Volume II" in which he basically picks like a mofo for several straight minutes. There is something to be said for stamina, i.e. being able to play a large passage of notes at a particular speed rather than quick bursts only. Ever met a guitarist who can only play fast for about thirty seconds? They're out there. Those are the guys who don't drill for stamina, and IMHO guitarists like Malmsteen have an edge in the argument of speed because their fingers could run a marathon at the pace of Carl Lewis instead of the quick bursts that just about any guitarist is capable of. One might be able to play like Gilbert if their minds worked really quickly and they had the dexterity to pull it off, but for many guitarists a Malmsteen solo is physically impossible no matter how much they practice.
DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE. NOT EVERYONE CAN PLAY FAST.
Lastly IMHO there's the physics-defying sounds of players like Shawn Lane, Buckethead, or Chris Impellitteri. This is the school of shredding that makes guitarists hang up their axes. I'll probably never be able to play an Impellitteri solo (not unless I tune the world like in "Dark City" and record a solo with the rest of the world travelling at half-speed or stopped completely, there ya go Chris :) ) but fortunately I'm not convinced that speed is everything and can remain in perfect tranquility with my music collection. There isn't much to say about this school of shred because it's a nirvana that few speed-loving guitarists ever reach, though I hear smoking crack will bring one closer to such perfection...
I know someone will, but I figured I'd ask anyway - "Anyone care to comment?"
