Jazz III's...
For the past 2 months I've been practicin' between these little 1.5
(mebbe higher) mm black plastic picks 'n the 2.00 mm Stubby's. I gotta
say my playing has really cleaned up. The size of the pick forced me to
concentrate a little bit more on my right handed technique. The Jazz
III's a flat pick and the "thicker than a quarter" one Vince was
referrin' to is the stubby model. If ya like pickin' with a bullet,
that's the pick for you. It's all personal taste 'n nipples as far as
the pick goes. Hell, you don't even NEED a pick (It's just a little
harder to play Master of Puppets w/o one). The most important factor to
any guitarist's improvement is his/her/its own creativity. So git
funky!
More on Mr. Romeo: I made that comment about his solo's in ignorance,
as I've only heard a little bit of his work now and again
(well....before the radio in Vince's van turned into oven-reheated
spaghetti), but I had to laugh in one passage off of Divine Wings of
Tragedy...it just sounded like he wanted to shred for the sake of
shredding in the song. Nothin' wrong with that, it's his music, i just
thought it was obsurd, in a funny Eckie sense of fucked up humor. I
dunno which song it was though...I'M IGNORANT!
To pay for lessons, or save yer money...
I've been playin' for just less than two years 'n I have (so I've
discovered through jammin' with other axe slingers I've come across in
Phx) developed the chops of somebody who's been playin' for 5 years, or
wankin' for 10. Didn't ever pay for lessons either :) Well, okay, I
can't afford lessons, but the resources are out there for you to just
pick up and read and learn. The best help I've found is from your own
personal research, pick out what elements of guitar facsinate you,
intice you to learn, and go to the library, search harmony central, go
to music101.com, etc...AND PRACTICE WHAT YOU READ! }:^) Hanging out
with local talents (I mean guitarists who play something other than
Nirvana and Blink 666), jamming with them, and learning from them. I
just happened to have the luxury of knowing Vince and his band OBSCURE,
and hangin' out with this handful of musical wizkids and learning from
their own interaction between eachother. I've yet to actually perform
anything for anybody though...another big help in anybody's playing is
experience in performing for actual PEOPLE. Iparty doesn't count, by
the way :)
Anyhoo, as far as guitar instructors go, I have no real experience with
those. I can tell you to go and at least check out "THE COMPLETE
GUITARIST" from your local library and photocopy the material in there,
or spring the money to buy it. It actually lives up to its name, it's
the most complete book on introduction to guitar that I've ever come
across. It actually goes beyond introduction and shows a buncha cool
fretboard theory that half of the ppl I've jammed with don't even think
about or know exist!

beautiful array of lessons made and emailed by the shredders, for the
shredders. That's where I learned my basic theory and learned to go
beyond power chords on guitar
http://www.music101.com/ this is pretty much a theory based site...I've
been waitin' for 'em to finish a lot of it 'n it still hasn't been done
and people like Mads 'n Bafu 'n whoeva are out there to show you the
light for free....
BUT YOU GOTTA PRACTICE IT, GODDAMN IT!!!

happen. Legalize Marijuana OR sign a progmetal band to a major label.

Sure, I love these picks!! Funny that you mentioned fast metal rhythms,
because I think that they become a lot easier to play when I use Jazz
III's. Like, for example, stuff from Scott Ian (S.O.D., mainly), Dave
Mustaine or Slayer.
BTW, doesn't John Petrucci use these picks?

OK, people. Personally, I think the idea of guitarists showing how
emotional a lick is is ludicrous. I hear about guitarists playing simple
licks who scrunch up their faces like it's the most intense thing they've
ever done. I mean, a smile, frown, or look of anger or frustration is
fine, but these people who I've heard look like they're in some sort of
communion with a BM is stupid. Maybe it's because I'm blind and never
felt the need to do things myself, but I think it's bull shit. I think
most of the time those emotions are over-blown and not honest, if I go by

Don't get me wrong, I don't mean to suggest that shred doesn't have it's
place, just that it has to be balanced. A solo that's noting but shred
sounds like a passage from a book writeen with no punctuation,
JustStraightThroughNoStopsNoHaltsNoEbbJustFlow. Or try to imagine a movie
that was just one 90-minute car chase scene. It'd get pretty boring,
wouldn't it?

Yes, and it's the fact that the *combination* of techniques was used is the
key. Again, I don't mean to imply that shred doesn't have it's place, or
has *no* emotion in it, just that it seems more diluted.

Maybe it's because I don't play guitar, but to me, the fast runs you point
out here are the buildups, and the actual "punch" comes on the held note
that comes at the end of each one of those runs. You've got the shred,
building, building, building, then..BANG! That held note is the release.
Now, as a player you may have a very different feeling during the buildup
than I do, but I bet on thet held note, everyone's on the same page. :)
And, though it may be blasphemous to say so, I think on portions of this
song the "ambient" music (the bass, keys, and "noises" in the back) plays
more of a role in establishing the emotional level of the song than the
lead does, and at least one of those times is during a shred run.

I find that a mix of the two styles works best for me. I got most of my picking
aproach from Steve Morse and Frank Gambale, both who use a combination of picking
styles.So, to limit yourself to only alternate picking, while it'll impress the hell
out of your friends, doesn't always give the best results on any given pattern or
run. Plus, the method of Steve Morse ( I call it economy picking) is much
more...well, economical to your right hand, as you are not moving about so much and
can get a lot more done with a minimal movement. I don't know...it works for
me....but what the hell do I know?!

Hey!
I haven't written to the Jam at all lately, and I'm WAAAAAAY behind,
but from what I've been reading, there's a lot if kewl discussions going on!
Good to see that the Jam is back and strong! Also it sounds like March is
going to be quite a month for us prog music fans.
Couple things:
Can someone please send me .mp3's of CME, STM, and any other kewl
songs that I'm missing? I know I might sound lazy, but I'm not on the I-net
long enough to mess with that 'uncook' program or whatever. So I'd
appreciate it if someone could do that for me!
Just a thought about those few months that someone mentioned DT
would have in like April or something. How about if they get into the
studio and record MII already!?!??! That would be a perfect time for it!
There was a post a while ago about a Fates Warning show in Anaheim,
does anyone know anything about this?
