No songs were 'butchered' as you so nicely put it.
No one except the band and KS know who changed what on FII.
To blame KS for this is unfair and to put words into his mouth is
insane.
Perhaps you should do what I did with my FII CD, which BTW i think
is brilliant.
I made a CDR of all the FII demo's available from various sources
bought a slimeline double CD jewel case and made my FII into a double
CD, one regular FII and a CDR of FII demo's together.

Yeah but if JP and MP weren't satisfied with the job of KS on FII
do you think they would have woked with him again and so soon ?

Good day, jammers,
Just wondering about the shred thing again.=A1@ Not that I'm big on
developing my speed (I'm just too lazy.=A1@ It's just not a priority
when one's supposed to be a med student. :)) right now.
However, in the past I've heard some things about the following:
1.=A1@ String gauge
2.=A1@ Pick
1.=A1@ String gauge
I had a teacher tell me that to facilitate fast playing I ought to do
things like drop my string tension (i.e., use lower string gauges
or tune down).=A1@ So, he had me try .008s.=A1@ God...the tone sucked.
So, I said to myself, "Screw it!"=A1@ I'm going back to my .009s on the
Ibanez and back to .010s on my Strat.=A1@ Any shredmaster jammers
have thoughts on string gauge?
2.=A1@ Pick
The same teacher told me to start using thick picks.=A1@ He recommended
Fender extra heavies.=A1@ I haven't found a pick that I like better, even
the
revered Dunlop Jazz III (just couldn't get used to it).=A1@ What do y'all
use?
I heard that Ed Van Halen uses really thin picks (This is, perhaps,
faulty
info considering my source.=A1@ He's a good guy, but sometimes he doesn't
know what the hell he's talking about.).=A1@ Is that true?=A1@ I think
Nuno uses Heavies rather than Ex-heavies.=A1@ Sure...I know..plectra are
chosen for personal styles, etc., but I'm just wondering if any of
you shred masters out there doesn't use a heavy or extra heavy pick.
So, basically, what we're talking about is light strings and heavy picks
for speed.=A1@ Thoughts?
7-Strings:
Anyone ever try the new Ibanez RG without the trem, with the
conventional hard tail/string-through?=A1@ It looks like a great idea,
knowing my personal tastes.
Bye for now...

Message-ID: <GOLKCNAOJOKBAAAA@mailexcite.com>
After reading the latest 'jam, along with the post suggesting that instead of hiring
another keyboardist, they hire Kevin Moore. I thought about this, and while this
would be REALLY cool for new music, it would make some older stuff sound odd, especially
in songs where Geoff already played keyboards. But considering that Kevin has already
proved his composing power in DT, and, even though Chris did most of the work, Geoff
and Michael have both done some good stuff, the combination of all three would kick
ass! And with all those textures being interwoven, the potential is endless!
So, I was thinking, why not do both? Why not talk Kevin into joining QR, hiring
another guitarist, and have QR be a sixpiece, a la Illusion-era GNR? Of course,
I suppose that would never happen, but hey, we can dream!
As for the guitarist, put my vote in for either Frank Aresti! That may not happen
either, but I thought I'd put in my opinion. :-)

Well, I thought I'd add my $.02 (after opinion tax) about the whole guitar
vs. keyboard thing. Once upon a time there was this guy. This guy thought
he was really lame and thought he knew the perfect way to make himself look
cool. He grabbed a shotgun and stuck it in his mouth and pulled the
trigger. He didn't know that his mother had loaded the shotgun while
changing loads in the washing machine just the night before and he blew his
head off. Anyway, this guy had a friend, who wasn't much of a friend, btw,
who took a picture of his friend's cerebral artwork painted on the wall and
scanned it in and posted it to alt.tasteless.pics for all the world to see.
Eventually it was examined by some aspiring agricultural pasteurization
undergraduates at Michigan State University who found a hidden message
written in an old Mesopotamian script amongst the bloody remains. Hurriedly
they sent a snail mail to the University of Boston's Ancient Civilizations
Study Center, but Ted Kaczinsky somehow intercepted the message and it
exploded whilst the post officer was delivering an acetylene welding kit to
the local Toys R' Us. Thus came about two ancient mesopotamian scripts, a
new one written upon a sidewalk in Eastern Boston (the meaning was never
discovered because a stray dog quickly arrived on the scene and devoured the
evidence), and the original that was discovered to have been the secret
recipe for Kentucky Fried Chicken's original recipe chicken. Anyway, back
to the guy who was nothing but a memory scribbled on the wall. He wasn't no
Kurt Cobain or anything, but he'd just brushed his teeth about an hour
before and was listening to an album at the time that was being played in a
passing car and heard for an instant a solo that had a guitar part and a
keyboard part coinciding. He thought it was pretty cool, and then went on
to stumble upon an accidental lead lobotomy. Anyway, the guy in the car
understands the discomfort of sitting on a pincushion with a thousand
needles jammed up his ass (he fell into a cactus garden once) and couldn't
decide what was worse. Strawberry Quick or Count Chocula cereal. So he
drove home. Upon investigation, the driver of the car was arrested for
assisting a suicide, because Dream Theater is just so damn cool that people
kill themselves wantonly after listening to it. Soon after the original
CD's were banned in stores and Dream Theater was jettisoned into outer space
where it was rumored a more advanced race of alien beings captured them and
revived their corpses. Unfortunately rigormortis had set in and they were
unable to play their instuments so they were jettisoned again by the aliens
and the Sun's gravitational pull drew them in and their corpses were
destroyed utterly. Never fear though folks! The US government captured
their genetic fingerprints (DNA, duh) and are planning to assassinate
several other great musicians for their DNA (I thought having them spank
their monkey into a cup would have been much easier, but that's the
government for you) and combine them to make the ultimate musical god:
Serpentor! Unfortunately, George Bush got drunk during a tour of Area 51
and drank the genetic compound. It was said to have tasted like Chunky
Manhattan Clam Chowder. Fancy that. After reviving his excrement, they
were only able to duplicate small furry creatures with three fingers and a
very extraordinarly talent for knitting doilies.
And the moral of the story is: Should you come across a dog devouring a
Mesopotamian recipe for the Colonel's best written in the gore of
dismembered postman, you really oughtta consider waking up.

Hey everybody,
My local drum shop is offering a free CD from the Pro-Mark
stick company with a purchase of four pairs of their
sticks. Actually, they were nice enough to give it to me
for only buying two pairs- I don't need THAT much lumber
all at once.
Anyway, it's a "Collector's edition Vol.1" disk featuring
some of their endorsers; Charlie Adams, Jimmy DeGrasso,
Dave Lombardo, Herman Matthews, Stephen Perkins, and MIKE
PORTNOY.
Mike's song is titled: "Portnoy's Complaint". It was
recorded in Japan on 3/23/97 at what seems like a drum
clinic. I think it was his opening solo- it was similar to
the one I saw him perform. Very cool :)
I wasn't sure if anyone else had this.
Later,
Dave
P.S; I usually use Vater -pro rock sticks(don't tell Mike:)

Subject: Kevin Shirley - Producer Extraordinaire?
Message-ID: <4c177a4a.34ff82f7@aol.com>
I like the theme of: did Kevin Shirley do justice to DT as a producer. First
some quick thoughts about the Dream Theater (from a recording perspective, not
performing perspective) sound in whole.
Vocals - FII is definitely the best sounding vocals. All the other albums
sounded like KJLB was singing behind a heavy cotton ball. Definite woofiness
on the others.
Guitar - Awake definitely had the best guitar sound. I think the guitar
sounded very meaty, while also retaining definition. ACOS was meaty, but lost
some definition. FII just has the guitar mixed too low. Yet it sounds great
on LitS.
Keys - FII is absolutely the best. Simply because they were actually turned
up as an equal (sometimes even dominating) instrument. There are so many
great key parts on Kevin Moore era albums, but they were always mixed so low,
except when the keys were the centerpiece.
Bass - This is a hard one. The worst is definitely WDADU (did he use a pick
on this one?), but that is the case with most of the instruments on that
album. FII has some good bass sounds, but so does Awake and IAW. I would
have to research this one a bit more.
Drums - The drum roll that kicks off 6:00 on Awake just sounds godly. Because
they are by themselves, you can really hear the room. Heck, you can even hear
the gate. I would have to go with Awake. Although as much as I hate the
triggered drum sounds on IAW, they did give a nice bass drum sound. No
comment on the other triggered sounds. However, I hate the snare on ACoS. I
love Piccolo Snares, but that went too far. Impact is great, but I still need
some depth. It's really hard to choose because Mike always has so much going
on, even a bad recording will sound magical. He is so good that I think the
only way I will ever appreciate a drummer in my band is if Mike is in my band!
Although I heard quite a few PIT (MI) students say he has no soul. Neil Peart
and Mark Zonder are much better. I never got this. Mike is a genius. And
that is only bolstered when you hear him on the Xmas CD 1997. I would say if
DT lost Mike, they would lose what makes them DT. BTW, I am a guitarist.
As far as Kevin Shirley goes, I would say Desmond Child did more to destroy a
song than Kevin probably did. I would imagine Kevin had some pressure on him
to make a "hit" album, and by the other discussion going on in the jam, we
know "hit album" usually means bad album.
Real quick: Why is it that a lot of jammers are so close minded? R&B and rap
suck? I love Prog Metal first, but I can't stop there. Where would prog have
come from if not a conglomeration of many styles? True the music scene is
hurting, but even in the 80's it had a lot to be desired! As far as other
types of music, I can definitely get into other stuff. I don't have a dance
or rap album, but some of the keyboard sounds can be interesting. Rap as a
whole sucks, but it is not 100% crap. Just 99.9999% crap. And dance is very
repetitive and boring also, but it can be cool also. I would say the "You or
Me" (the demo) keyboard sound can be associated with a dance sound. And
industrial has a lot of cool stuff to offer. I don't like most of it, but
just because you sample something and run it through a computer to "stretch"
its possibilities doesn't mean it is souless, or easy.
Okay, gotta go. I would like to hear about your favorite recorded DT sounds,
as well as your thoughts on non-rock music (not just classical, jazz and
funk)!!!

There's another preamp out there that I've been mighty impressed by,
especially for its price. All tube, even. Anybody here play a Rocktron
Pirahna? More gain than you'd ever need (trust me, even Sepultura
wouldn't need all the gain this puppy supplies), it actually has tones
that are MUCH heavier than the Tri-Axis'. I think they retail for @

and a new set of strings nowadays.

Well, all this talk about keyboards and guitars makes me lament other
instruments as well. In the rock world unfortunately, guitars are the
backbone of everything. However, you cannot think you are above
everyone else because you play keyboards or any other instrument. I
lament the lack of horns in rock, especially being a saxophonist myself.
Pretty much you have ska, which is definitely not my cup of tea, and
then you have your token horn here and there, but not nearly enough.
But hell, it's all what people go for, and you can't put down other
instrumentalists, but you also can't put yourself on a pedestal because
you play a keyboard.
