Nope, no LtL :( It got to the end and there was no encore, and I looked at my friend Doug and told him I was a bit pissed that they didn't play "that 8 minute song at the end of the album" (I didn't remember the name of it :).

    > distinctly remember surrounded, and also TTT with Galactic Cowboys on > backup vocals. That was fun. I also remember John Myung swingin' his

Yes, Surrounded was played! And TTT with the Galactic Cowboys bounding out onto stage to scream into the microphones was an excellent treat!

Actually, I don't remember this. But maybe just because it was my first DT concert, and I wasn't surprised by it :-)

Where were you in the crowd? I was in the first or second row, in the center, right behind the badly placed tent pole! It was a really nice night. Great temperature, and it was in the downtown festival tent in Rochester. Awesome first DT concert experience. I had heard their CD before, but I had not bought it yet (in college).

Another cool concert moment was a few years later on the Awake tour. The show was in Buffalo, NY in the armory (great place for a concert). I Mother Earth opened for them, and Mike came out to play drums with them for a bit :-) Plus, in the middle of The Silent Man, while they are all sitting on stools at the front of the stage, all quiet and in the groove of the song, an ear splitting "6 o'clock on a christmas morning!" blares out over the speakers! It was incredibly loud, and I think it scared just about everyone in the hall! I still wonder who was responsible for the sample...Kevin, who was not on stage? Or maybe a roadie. Instead of getting pissed, the guys just started laughing and continued to play :-)

In YTSEJAM digest #3626, the sharp-eyed Bafu Vai wrote:

<< BTW Jeff, you left out a Shawn Lane appearance on your list: "Fission," the latest release from the Johanssen brothers. >>

    Hi all Jammer-types...

Bafu Vai is indeed correct. Somehow I managed to neglect "Fission" in my earlier Shawn Lane post, which was really silly, since it's a great album. I only wish that Mr. Lane had played on more than two cuts, despite the presence of the wonderful Mike Stern on several other tracks. (In fact, I believe that Stern's playing on "Fission" is his best in quite some time.) By the way, "Fission" is scheduled to be released domestically by Shrapnel Records (one of my very favorite record labels); it had previously been available only as an import on Jens' Heptagon Records label, just as the Johanssens' collaboration with Allan Holdsworth, "Heavy Machinery," had been before Shrapnel picked it up last year.

    Thank you, Mike Varney. <grin>

Shawn Lane is also alleged to be part of Dweezil Zappa's insane guitar opus, "What the Hell Was I Thinking?" along with a who's who of other six-string legends including Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Steve Morse, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen (who, for the record, I happen to like quite a bit) and many others. I wonder if Dweezil had the good sense to ask John Petrucci to appear on the album as well? I certainly hope so, as JP's contributions would definitely add to the already high quality of the project. <grin>

NP: Al DiMeola, "Elegant Gypsy" (another guitarist who should be on Dweezil's album)

    >come on now, you can't be serious, the pick is so small nobody is going to see >your using a red pick. they both play the same. > >Rocky

Well, granted, it would look rather stupid to get a black pick just because Petrucci plays with black picks. But Dunlop does not change the color of the picks just to have variation. They change them for a reason.

On their website (http://www.jimdunlop.com/tortex2.htm), you will see that each color represents a different gauge. Black is a heavier gauge than purple. But it is confusing what the difference between the regular Jazz picks and the Black Gold Jazz. I suppose they are the same _expect_ that since they are black, they are heavier gauge.

Now, I don't think that pick gauge would have as much of an influence as string gauge would, but I would still like to try the black Jazz picks. So, no, I don't care what color I have...that makes no difference. If they both play the same for me, then I'll go for whichever is cheaper and more readily available. But I am interested in whether a thicker pick will make a difference in my play or not.

Thanks to those who sent in suggestions or offered to help me find some. If anyone knows a place to order them over the Internet (music store), please let me know.

    Thanks,

Ah, but you should see them on tour now! The line-up is basically the "classic" line-up, except that they have a very talented Russian keyboardist in place of Rick Wakeman. The Dec. 13 Yes show in San Francisco ranks right up there with the Nov. 1 Dream Theater show in Chicago as one of the best concerts I have ever seen. (I believe Yes will be back in the states later this year. For more info, check out www.nfte.org.)

i have secret knowledge that "empty tremor" is actually just a stage name... for hanson's progressive side project! that's right, hanson and empty tremor are one in the same. yeah, i can't believe kids this young could have time for two bands of such varying styles, along with homework and dating.

    Howdy -

    A couple of things...

First, does ANYONE out there have the Sega "Necronomicon" game featuring JP? I'm still looking for cool sound files of the tracks other than the RealAudio files floating around. So, in general, if anyone has any WAV or MP3 recordings of the tracks, PLEASE forward them to me, or at least point me to a site where I can get them. Many thanks!

Secondly, does anyone know where to find any programs to convert RealAudio to either MP3 or WAV formats? Private e-mail please.

    Thanks again..... Matt T.
