October Thorns, a progressive metal band based in Brooklyn, NY, seeks a
highly skilled and dedicated keyboardist. Our influences include: Dream
Theater, Fates Warning, Yngwie, Symphony X, Angra, etc. We have management
with industry contacts. We just need the final element to make this band
    complete.

Mike... welcome to the Ytsejam! (Yeah, I know you've read it for the past
few years... you know what I mean...)

    >PS - What the hell are you doing on-line today anyway?
    >You should be at the record shops buying the LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT CD
    >that was released today!!!! (shameless plug!)

Yeah, I did that, but the people at Tower Records are... STUPID <g>. I
went there and said I wanted a copy of "Liquid Tension Experiment" which
was released today. The guy asked me to repeat that, which I did, and then
he proceeded to spend five minutes looking for "Quick Liquid" on the
computer. Once I re-explained it, a woman went to the stockroom. After
another ten minutes, she came back to the counter. She turned around and
looked at the library cart right behind the counter. She picked up the CD
sitting on the top of cart and handed it to me. Oy vey.

Anyway, here's a VERY quick review. I've listened to everything except
Three-Minute Warning (not enough time yet; about to put it on). Listening
to it, it was all pretty good. Some was very interesting, some just wasn't
<g>. But then "Universal Mind" came on. I *immediately* remembered it,
from the concert last November, listening with a bunch of strangers as we
slowly realized what it was. It brought back GREAT memories. Anyway,
right when you think you know where the music is going, it jumps into
reggae. Excellent CD; so far, the best of 1998.

    (That was sure explanatory, eh?)

Got LTE today, even though it was horribly expensive. Wow. Though there
are some weak moments (Kindred Spirits, bits of Freedom of Speech), I still
think that this was where DT should have gone after ACOS (well, after Awake,
but ACOS had to be released). I remember saying so, back in 96.

Rudess kicks hiney. And for all I love Myung's playing, the times when
Levin's playing comes to the forefront are my favorite times on the album.
So I will, tentatively at the moment, place the most responsibility for the
way this album rocks upon Tony Levin. He is the jazz man. "The Stretch"
and "Chris and Kevin's Excellent Adventure" should have been longer.

Well, after the Fix for '96 show at the Birch Hell, I got a pick from
Petrucci. If I remember correctly, it's a Tortex standard, the light
purple kind. However, in every interview I've ever seen he's said it's a
    Jazz 3. Huh.

    Hey,

The John Myung Signature bass should be available later this year (I think
they're alrady accepting orders). The body will be basswood and the string
spacing much closer than the TRB6 (JM just isn't that big a guy, you know).
But it will have a 35" scale, which already makes me VERY interested :-)))
The top is not maple, it's veneer cuz JM apparently doesn't like the sound
of a maple top, he prefers a deeper sound (My TRB6 JP does have a maple top
but it's so thin it doesn't change the sound, but it sure brings up the
price). I haven't read anything about prices yet, but I think it should
retail for about the same as the standard TRB6 (the non-Patitucci
signature), which stores sell for 1100-1300 bux + tax. Oh, and it won't have
the spider inlays, it will be just dots. Bummer. If they're gonna do this,
they should just go ahead and not make marks at all.

I think it's a shame John Petrucci and Ibanez are splitting. I think the
JP100 is the best solidbody Ibanez guitar out there, and I played the new
90th Anniversary model, and it is just unbelievable. Well, I hope Yamaha
keeps the tradition, they should at least be able to bring the price down.

    MIKE PORTNOY:
    You're crazy dude :-)
But I think that all makes sense. I've met Mike before and I have seen few
people with the same drive and passion for music and for his fans.
(Yeah, I'm kissing the ass of the drummer in my fave band, so sue me)

I have one final question, and pardon me as I shout.
WHO THE FUCK IS NICKY LEMMONS??????

    Later all!

    Christian.

they UNFORTUNATELY had to play some Metallica.

Just thought you'd like to know. :)

    Well,

I think I solved the mystery of the pick (wouldn't want all of you to
have a restless night tonight worrying over it). To those who forgot,
the pick of interest is the pick that Petrucci, Vernon Reid, and others
play. It is ... drum roll, Mike P:

    | 7/8 * * *** * * *** * | 5/ 4 * *** * * *** |

the _nylon_ jazz 3. I know some have said this, but I just got it
confirmed. Specifically, it is the black stiffo nylon jazz 3 (Sharp -
1.38) (item number: 47R3S will get you 24 black picks).

Making the world a safer play to pick,

I have been into Metal Church since Blessings in Discise, I can't remember
exactly when it was released(1988 - 90) but it is a great album.
The lyrics change from social issues to personal conflict to the Titanic
disaster. Names of the band members I don't have memorized but are very
talented, the drummer has one of the quickest double bass I've heard and
has lots of talent, definitely in the top 10. Duel Guitarists - Great
    metal sound.

Next, - The Human Factor - ( 1992 ? ) another great effort with more
meaningful lyrics, and more good metal sound.
I saw them in concert supporting this album at Red Rocks Amphitheater in
Denver with Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth - Great show - don't care to much
    for Slayer.

    - Hanging in The Balance ( 1993-4 ? ) - Probably my favorite
This is the last album that I know of. If any body knows any newer
releases please reply. Also I have not been able to find any web sites of
    theirs please help me out.....

They have earlier music like - The Dark - which I heard was more Death
Metal but I have never listened to personally, and a few others that I
can't name because I don't know the titles.

I am at work so I don't know the exact release dates but they are close I
    think.
They are in the realm of older Metallica, Iced Earth, Maiden, well along
    those lines.
If you like these bands I would almost guarantee that you would like them.

I'm not a psychic or anything, but I'd say that "never" is a good answer.

This is the f<>cking SHITT!!! I used to be a "S-X is an ok band... not bad",
person, but this album blows f*cking tDWoT away, in my opinion, the new drummer
has added a dimension to this band that they didn't previously have...

This is a definite MUST HAVE...
