    One question please....

When are DT coming to Australia? I need my fix and the albums just
won't give me the same hit as a live show....:)

    Cheers

    Paul D.

P.S. Is the Liquid tension Experiment thingy released in Australia too?

Nope I don't think so, I haven't seen any Magna Carta CD's here except
    in imports shops.
I'd suggest buying it online or you can mail me about me picking it up
    for you.

Yes, that's the real Mike Portnoy. I actually never figured he would
reveal his e-mail addy publicly because of the shitslide of e-mail he's
probably due to get, but he's been reading (and I assume enjoying) the
Ytsejam for a long time now, providing VERY helpful and informative
updates on DT activities, and my guess is that he just couldn't hold
back anymore... he had to jump into some of these conversations!! Just
    too juicy, don't ya know!!

Anyway, I think the greater challenge before the Jam right now is to
continue about all the cutting-edge content that made it great back when
we didn't know if anyone was watching. I'm sure that's what Mike wants
to be a part of anyhow. If everyone stops the usual wild tossing about
of opinions, and turns it into a mailing list full of "Hey man, you
rule!!! I saw you in concert!!!" it will get boring fast. So let's get
right back to business, and we can just keep tucked into the back of our
mind that if this were a kegger, Mike would be lined up at the tap with
the rest of us, having a blast.

On another topic, an interim update has been posted to the Prism page
with notes on Cygnus Gold, Wrath Gold, and a questionnaire to help
determine the direction I will take PR in for the immediate future. The
participation of any and all Jammers is very much welcomed.

And to the Portmeister... I'll probably bring all the latest CDs for
you to the Deep Purple/DT show this year, assuming you guys don't skip
Arizona this time, and/or I'll send them to Syrinx and have him drop
them off at the east coast show if that's the only option we have. Party
    on, everyone...

    Oh no...

I think I know why Mike Portnoy decided he had to drop us a note... because we've been talking guitar so much, and he can't take it anymore! Well, tough shit.. I have more bullshit to spew yet! Non guitar/creative music fans, just skip this message!

I got a copy of Bumblefoot: "Hands" today. That's Ron Thal's band. I wanted to be the harbinger of doom for you all... this guy has reinvented the guitar. Technical, but listenable, psychotic, but controlled. Every song on this disc is a vocal tune... they're like Rage Against the Machine meets Steve Vai (with a crack pipe) meets Pantera, meets some random Reggae/Rasta/Rap kind of vibe, with more guitar and violence than I can express. This dwarfs any of his previous recordings.... it's un-real.

In one week, I bought LTE and the new SX, and have already topped them, IMO. That's not exactly a fair thing to say, since they're not even similar sounding discs... but this is so completely new, and untouched guitar oriented rock... it's absurd! The album is not yet available, and may not be for some time... but you can check out some very meager samples at Ron's temporary site at

    http://www,prognosis.com/bumblefoot

They don't showcase what the album is like... I was not prepared for this. I think this may be the best guitar playing I have ever heard... and that means a lot, coming from me, even if you don't like or agree with me... I have heard a whole lot of guitar playing. :)

Catania is realy far from Pordenone but if you really like DT there's nothing that can retain you. (I don't think that you have to spent 280$, maybe there's a less expensive way to do that trip).

Woo Hoo, got LTE. Here's my review in Haiku:

I am on my knees LTE is my new god Buy, all who can hear

Also found Royal Hunt. Listenign to it now, sounds pretty cool. Also found Echolyn -- When the sweet turns sour. Nifty!

And to the people looking for Enchant's Time Lost. The best place to buy it is from the band. :) Picked mine up when they opened for Fates, and even got it signed.

because I just walked in, went to the "L" section, found the bin card(!) for Liquid Tension Experiment, and there it was. Only one, though, but that's all I needed. All I can say about it is that it's a good thing Crystal Planet came out last week because it's not going to be listened to for a long time now that I have LTE. >confirm this? And is there any major difference between the Tortex and >Nylon on feel and play (and tone)?

    Hello Brandon,

I'm not a "pick expert", but I've been playing a while. Let me give you my opinion based on the fact that I like to play fast with a lot of muted technique combined with harmonics.

Hard glossy picks, like fender mediums, really do the job for me. They keep a firm edge when I pick fast and allow me to pull false harmonic screamers out of my strings easily. They keep my picking consistent and allow me to "pop" the string for the harmonic squeals without losing much sustain.

Nylon style picks are too "mushy" for me. They seem to "give" or "bend" or "mesh" too much when I build speed, making the muted notes lose some of their punch. The notes seem to slur a bit, and my rhythm becomes a little less consistent on a fast run. The other problem is that due to the "mushy" feel, it's more difficult for me to get my false harmonics and squeals, because instead of the string "popping" off the edge and grazing my thumb, it sort of bounces right into it which can dull the squealing effect.

To get an idea of my style, my old .wav is sitting out at http://www.dhpc.com/buster.wav but I warn you, I do NOT claim to be in any sort of league with the players we talk about here on the jam. If I could play like JP, I wouldnt be sitting here building web sites at 4:00am.

Hope this helps a bit, Dave "buster"

    Hi there progsters

For anyone interested in Metal Church; there are only three sites with information about the band:

    http://www.rt66.com/sloppy/metal_church/index.html http://www-cse.ucsd.edu/users/bruss/Metal/groups/MeCh.html http://www.gj.net/~krazykat/list/metal_c.htm

The first one has also the lyrics to all their albums.

At http://www.metallinks.com/ one can find links to (woow!!!) too many bands

AND the Questions are 1) I'm a little confused about when ''Metropolis II'' is going to be released. Will it be with the next DT full length album or it will be released as an EP (like ACoS)?

Some of you guys are really fucking lucky having seen DT (GODS) LIVE more than one time. I don't know when (if ever) in the next 20 years I will be able to see them in concert. The funs here in GREECE are fucking crazy. Check the new Stratovarius Live CD and you' ll understand what I mean.

Hello to all the DT fans especially those from GREECE, (is there any of you on the list???)

Buy Stay Heavy, stay Metal, stay Prog, stay Jammer, stay what ever you wanna be.

I picked up LTE last night at Sam Goody. I think the only way that I found it there was because I had reserved a copy last week. I knew that the other two CD stores in the mall didn't have a clue when I asked for it and I didn't see any LTE CDs on the self at Sam Goody. It's too bad that most people (other than Prog-heads) won't probably even get to hear this CD because I was totally blown away. This is by far my favorite instrumental jam CD with every song being unique. Thanks to JP, Tony L, Jordan R, and of course, MP (thanks for the liner notes:) for this amazing collaboration of music that was done in less than one week of recording! I hope that LTE is just a fore-gleam of what DT might have in store for us Ytsejammers in the near future (Metropolis Part 2). And I like the disclaimer on the back of the CD case about "Three Minute Warning." I pity anyone that hits the "Stop" button after track 8. Thanks again!!!

BTW...DT Rules, LTE Rules, and Nicky Lemons and the Migraines Rule :)

    Hi kids.

Sorry for my ytse-irrelevance, but if anyone can help, I'd be grateful......

In Melbourne in 1996, I saw a CD (I thought) entitled "Kronos Quartet plays Morricone". Now, recently I tried to order this in through my local CD store and they couldn't help me; no such CD title. SO, does anyone have this CD, and if so, what's the title? Alternatively, if anyone can help me get my hands on this slippery bastard, please let me know! Thanks for any and all help!

    Hi there,

a few thoughts about yesterdays show in Munich "Colloseum": When we arrived about 1/2 hour before the gates were opened, there were already a few guys pretty drunk and screaming their lungs out... ]From what I heard it seemed to me these guys were hungarian - anyone from the yjam? Since I haven't seen a show at this venue before, I was pleasantly surprised: a nice hall with good acoustics and room enough for about 3.500 people. I don't know if it was a sold out show, but it seemed _very_ full at the time DT started to play...

First came "Liquid Tension Experiment" form the soundboard, definitly a must have from what I heard (thanks btw to Erica for the MP3).

Vanden Plas: really impressive. I already enjoyed their two CDs, but they are even better live! The drummer seemed to smile all the time and I guess they adopted the bassplayer from some Vikingmetal-band ;) Fast guitarplaying (even though most of the fast solo-runs were _only_ chromatics) and a very emotional voice! Highlights (imho): "Crown of Thorns" and "Rainmaker".

During the break we heard the unreleased songs from the Falling Into Infinity - sessions (I know it's the same every night on this tour..). By pure coincidence (thanks for the smoke :) I met Ties and some of his friends right where I was standing in front of the stage. It's a small world after all..

AiC "The Rooster", lights out, "Clockwork Orange" -> enter THE BAND. ]From the beginning with Lines in the Sand it was pretty much the standard set that has been mentioned before. Some amusing moments: M.Portnoy and Derek throwing drumstick at each other (one could hardly call this juggling). The "Metallica"-drumkit during the ballads. James LaBrie stroking J.Petruccis chest-hair. The short "One" (from that M-Band) excerpt featuring John Petrucci on keys, Mike Portnoy on bass and vocals, the drum-roadie on drums and the stagemanager on guitar...

Other things worth mentioning (the comments in brackets about the looks are from a girl that stood right next to me): James' voice keeps getting better from tour to tour, his hair keeps getting shorter and shorter ("He seems to lose his hair, ergo he has to cut it"). J.Myung is positivly not of this world, either an Alien or Cyborg, with hands this fast and precise. ("He is cute") Derek is just _the_ showman and his lavalamps have infested the whole stage. ("I guess he's into bondage and other kinky stuff") Mike has a striking resemblance to Animal from the Muppets especially with his new hair... (I spare you the comments from the X-chromosome...) John Petrucci was perfect as always, but seems to have _way_ to much money to spend on guitars and equipment: 2 complete 19" racks, the Mesa Boogie amps and speakers and at least 7 guitars. He played the new JPM100P4 with the camouflage colours (i like it), the JPM limited edition for the Ibanez 90th anniversary (blue and green, but you can see the wood!), the b/w 7-string, the black and blue 7-string from the last tour, a JPM100P2, some kind of Telecaster design i didn't recognize, and the semi-acoustic for Anna Lee. ("He looks cleaner and younger, now that he took the beard off", and after he took his shirt off: "Oh my god, he must have gained at least 30pounds during the last year, too bad...")

that's about all I have to say, I just hope the guys are back real soon for another dose of my favorite drug! - jerry :--)

I just got this from my (nonjammer) brother and thought it was pretty fun= ny. I'm sure I'll get the same thing when I begin my search later today...

"Well, here is the short version of the sordid and pitiful story that is my search for LTE: I checked at Borders Books and Music (in Crossroads Mall) about a week and a half ago to see if they would be getting LTE. They said that they were getting one copy. I tried to reserve it, they said no. I went there yesterday at lunch, they said that they were still unpacking the boxes of CDs that they had received and that they hadn't seen it yet. I went back at 7pm and they told me the exact same thing. I also checked at Sam Goody (I know, I know, but I thought it would be worth a try) and all I got was a blank stare from the clerk (who was probably thinking "liquid tension experiment? He must mean Aqua.") I felt like screaming "NOT EVERYONE IN THE WHOLE WORLD LISTENS TO PEARL JAM AND FIONA APPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!", but I restrained myself. I then proceeded to visit every music store in the free world to find a copy. The only place that even admitted to having the album in their database was Media Play, (where it took the girl five tries to spell "experiment" correctly) but the one copy that they had supposedly received was nowhere to be found. It hadn't been sold, it was just missing. That happened at two different MP locations. So I was forced to retreat back to the homestead, depressed, defeated, dehydrated, and still LTE-less. So today I will return to Borders and see if they have unpacked their shipment from yesterday. (note that their "New Arrivals" bin is filled with CDs that were also released yesterday) If they can't find it this time, I am going to give up and express order it from musicblvd, but only after I bus' mad caps in some foo' domes."

In other news, I totally dig the new Satch album. It didn't do much for = me the first couple listens, but now I think I like it even more than his la= st album. 2 points of interest: I wish Satch would ever find a decent drumm= er, and Stu Hamm is white! Don't ask me, I just always thought he was black = for some reason. hehe

Get high on ether when there's no one in the house. Pretend it's the big one the moment you pass out. That's just rehearsal, but it's comforting somehow To practice dying now.
