Hello Friends:
For all you folks out there having a terrible time getting LTE, I did get in
a shipment this week for The Artist Shop and will continue to restock it to
meet whatever the demand may be. I predict it will be a big one, especially
when those who get theirs start posting reviews. This is one damn good album!
You'll find LTE in The Artist Shop at <http://www.artist-shop.com/magna>.
Ordering instructions are at <http://www.artist-shop.com/order.htm>.

I just got Superior's "Behind" and Symphony X's tDWoT from Laser's Edge
(along with 8 other CDs). I sent my check in on Friday and got the CDs
a week and a day later in the mail. And I got a credit slip for the CDs I
ordered that they didn't have (I should have reserved) plus $4 for the
Symphony X album. So I guess the price (at least for tDWoT) is $15 rather
than $19 like the web page says/said. So buy from Laser's Edge. :)

Hi there:
This information will be helpful for many people. Recently I got my
Superior Cd and Enchant's "Time Lost" from Knights of the Round, (it only
took two weeks since they ship the package, and keep in mind that I live in
Mexico):
http://www.knightsoftheround.com
Laser's Edge
They don't have Enchant's Time Lost, but they have a nice catalog of prog
rock and prog metal. Worth to check them out!.

M&M Music

They are specialized in progressive music. They have all the Magna Carta
catalog but I don't know if they have the new CD LTE. Also they have
Threshold's Cd's. I have ordered several times from them and the average
time of delivery is 2-3 weeks.

First off, believe the hype: LTE is VERY GOOD. And oddly enough, I had
no trouble finding it: I called Borders to see if they had it, and they
did. Then, I happened to be walking by a Harmony House, and lo and
behold they had it!
Also, I got SX's "Divine Wings of Tragedy" and like it alot. But where
can I find their new CD, "Twilight On Olympus"?
Thirdly, I goofed and sent the following to the 'JAM, instead of another
mailing list. SORRY!

For those of you in the St. Louis or Columbia, MO areas, there is a used
CD / import / rare place called Now Hear This. I got LTE from there the
day it came out for $13, while the 12 local Best Buy stores were still
waiting for their combined 3 copies of the disc to come in. I bought two
copies (one for Irene), the guy had already sold 6 so far, and had 4 more
on reserve for other customers.
This is also the place where I picked up A Pleasant Shade of Gray the day
it came out, when no other place in the city (this is the Columbia one)
had it. If you have access to either of these stores (there may be more,
but these are the only two I know of), I highly recommend them. They even
had the Jap import of the Hollow Years single for $21.
As for everyone 'testing' Mike Portnoy to find out if it's really him,
don't bother the man, that *is* his address. There are alot of us that
have had it for a while, and I don't think Mike wants to be playing DT
Trivia for the next month just to prove his identity.
As for where the '420' comes from, April 20th is Mikes birthday, or
4/20... I don't think *any* of us are that obessed that we'd use his bday
in our email address. :)
Anyway, now that you're posting, Mike... What do you think of Yngwie? >:)

Well, right before coming out of massive lurk mode, there are a couple of
things that Mike wanted known to the jam. I have been remiss in not
forwarding these to the jam in a timely fashion and while he is clear and
free about posting these things himself now, I will do what I should have
done earlier in the week and post these items as directed.
1) Medleys. Ugh. Well, MP made a compelling argument that while it would
be great for DT to play a five hour set every night (and being the monster
he is he actually stated that if it were up to him THEY WOULD :), it is
impractical for a band like DT to be able to do this night in and night out.
They, as a band, have concluded that a two hour set is what they will be
playing. Thus, to allow people who have not seen DT for a long time to hear
parts of their epic long songs, medleys are the only way to go. This is a
sensible approach and he wanted the jam to be better informed as to the
reasoning behind the decision.
>> I'm sure people in Finland (for a random example)
>> would rather hear bits of Learning To Live and A
>> Change of Seasons (both of which they never have
>> heard live) as opposed to NONE of them and a full
>> Metropolis, which they already have heard. (which
>> is what the alternative was..)
Mike also did say that if I perpetuate my distaste for medleys, that he
would personally perform a manual tracheotomy on me, soooooooo, I now
unequivocally say that I LOVE MEDLEYS !!
2) Christmas CD. Wow, ol' Warren really set me up for this one ....
bastard !! But being the decent person he is has let the other 99.46% of
the jam know that he was kidding when he abused my human rights on the jam
......
Anyhow, here is MP's unedited answer to why different material was not
available to be put on the Christmas CD:
>> Live tracks or unreleased songs
>> are not an option because Elektra owns the
>> rights to them and therefore we would not have
>> been able to give them away as gifts...

Since this is my first appearance in this list I will
get right into the point. Does anyone knows if DT is
planning... or maybe thinking of a south american
tour?(this question I wanna personally ask to THE
REAL MIKE PORTNOY) I mean, these guys are so
excellent musicians, so profesional and talented, and
first of all, they have gained a lot of fans these
years, specially with the falling into infinity and

While doing some 'jam cleanup on my hard drive, I came across a long post
on Kai selling $10 CD-Rs with the following from Mr Bahr:
>but you'll quickly find yourself with no time
>for it. You'll either have to hike prices to keep afloat financially, or
>your backlogs will make mine look like a wait at McDonalds, or you'll
>have to cut corners everywhere. The possible positive outcome is that if
>you last until fall, CDR media's price should put you in a good position
>to maintain your low price. I myself plan to have things at $13 or below
>by October, including color liners and color images on the discs
>themselves.
Mike, I realize that you had to increase your prices back to $20 (from $17) in
large
part to your printer experiences and ink gobbling for color images on the discs.
I'm not flaming you (and will be ordering another CD soon anyway) but I'm in
the crowd
that would love to see you hit your aforementioned $13 target even if I don't
get the
color image on disc. I'm in the "show me the music" crowd and can do without
more expensive color liners and images. But ... to each his own.

Here's the response I received today - note that I already bought DWoT
from Laser's Edge so I didn't ask about that availability but I bet they have

Yes, the new and improved price for Symphony X CDs is $15, down from $19.
Also Superior/Behind for $12 - a bargain for that excellent CD!

I've seen several requests for the songs that John Petrucci did for the Sega
Saturn game, Necronomicon Digital Pinball
( http://kaze.kazenet.com/nec.html ). I've never seen these two songs in
any format, so I have encoded the only version I have into MP3 files.
Unfortunately, this source is from a video tape of a JP guitar clinic
(Orlando, FL - 8/18/97 same tape as Purple Rain on Dr. Mosh's site). It's
mono, and the DAT "backing band" that JP was using sounds really crappy, but
JP really shreds on these two short (>2 min) songs. I could also swear that
MP did the drums for the backing tracks...if not...someone VERY influenced
by Mike.
If anyone would like for me to e-mail these two files for posting on a web
site, I would be happy to send them to you. Files sizes are: 852K & 908K.
Now, go to www.cdnow.com and have them Fed-X you a copy of Liquid Tension

Well, got my copy of LTE yesterday... slight hassle getting it...
went into Newbury's in Burlington, and could not find it anywhere,
which had me annoyed b/c alot of other BostonJammers got theirs at
other Newbury's... at least there was a Tower right next door, which
had it... had to pay $17 for it (probably would have been $12-$13 at
Newbury's), but at least I have it... Let me tell you, this is such
an awsome CD... still not sure about Chris & Kevin's Excellent
Adventure... like the rest... only have made it though 3 Min Warning
once so far (had to go down to a lab out at work, so could not listen
to CD at work much today)... I think that Mike's comments inside are
great... Damn Guitarists, Damn Guitarists, Have I told you I love
guitarists... really like the liner as well... some very cool
graphics here... and really funky shot of Tony Levin on the back...
Anyway, here is my idea for the summer tour:
1st Opening Act: Rudess/Morgenstein Project
2nd Opening Act: LTE
Main Show: DT
Encore: monster jam w/ DT, RPM and LTE
How's that for the show of a lifetime? Sure, Jordan, Mike, & John
might get a little tired... then again, Portnoy would proably be even
more of an animal after all of that...
Anyway, time to go before I ramble on some more...

First off, every DT fan should own "Liquid Tension Experiment". It rocks hard, features absolutely virtuoso playing, and is an amazing accomplishment for one week's worth of time. The tunes are extremely cool - a couple could be DT instrumentals, as somebody already mentioned. For guitar fans, you will definitely be blown away by Petrucci's work on this album. If anything, his technique is just getting cleaner and more ridiculously honed. With both Portnoy and Petrucci on the album (IMO the "heart" of DT), this is the next best thing to Metropolis II.
On an unrelated note, I would GREATLY appreciate it if any keyboard/MIDI gurus out there could recommend a good MIDI interface board. Actually, the manual for my keyboard (Roland XP-10) says you can interface it with a PC through either the serial port (sounds like the cheap alternative!) or through a MIDI interface card. Is the serial port interface sufficient for some amateur recording? What do you gain from the full MIDI interface card implementation? What MIDI cards do you recommend? What software?
Any help would be much appreciated.
jam on, -Neil.
