It seems as either folks can get LTE right away, or it's a pain in the
ass. Unfortunately, I'm the latter....
I get blank stares (which I do from everyone), and it does or doesn't
show up on the computer system. If it IS on the computer, then they
don't have a copy or haven't even ordered one.
Such is life. I ordered LTE at a Blockbuster (prices) music. I checked
out the Border's here in Norman, OK, and they didn't have a copy (unlike
everyone else's experiences : LUCKY BASTARDS!!)
Well, I'm done with my griping for now.

First some news on the subject at hand. This is an article about Ozzfest that
appeared in an eMpTyV news article today:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ozzy Taps Limp Bizkit, Foos, Pantera, Slayer, Others For
Ozzfests
Things are beginning to firm up for this summer's Ozzfest outings, which will
include dates in the U.S. and Europe. The tour's founding father, Ozzy Osbourne,
has just announced that Limp Bizkit, Sevendust, and Coal Chamber will be joining
Ozzfest on its U.S. run. They will join a mainstage bill that already includes
Tool and Megadeth. Another mainstage act is also expected to be announced
shortly.
Meanwhile Seattle fuzz metal heavyweights the Melvins will be on the tour's
second stage along with Snot, Incubus, Ultra Spank, Kilgor and System of a Down.
The U.S. Ozzfest is tentatively slated to kick off on July 3 at the PNC Bank
Center in Holmdale, New Jersey, and is expected to run through the beginning of
August. Tickets will go on sale mid-April, and an itinerary should be ironed out
shortly. On June 20, Ozzy will take the Ozzfest to England for the tour's only
European date which will take place at the Milton Keynes Bawl outside of London.
The European Ozzfest audience will be treated to a bill that includes Ozzy, the
original line-up of Black Sabbath, Foo Fighters, Pantera, Slayer and Fear
Factory, with Coal Chamber and Life Of Agony among the bands playing the second
stage.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A lot of those bands really suck, but hey, it's worth it to see Ozzy and 'Deth.

ROFL! Nice comeback for the post hehehe. Someone asked a serious
question about guitar picks, I responded with some opionions about
what ones I like/dislike, then of course someone has to come along and
whine about the fact that we're talking about gear and helping
each other. Typical.

Maybe if you could come up with something valuable to post with something
of substance, you wouldn't have to flame everyone elses posts.
Although I agree that practice is most important, your gear, right down
to the very thing you were ragging on, can shape your sound and style.
Practice all you want, but unless you're picky (pun intended) about
your gear and sound, you'll never develop STYLE. Guitarists without
style are a dime a dozen.

Yeah Vince, metal picks are cool if you find the right ones, but they
aren't for everyone.
I met Brad Gillis and Jeff Watson from Nightranger back in 88, and
they each use metal and they each gave me one of their picks.
I took 'em home to check 'em out, and they DEFINITELY affected my
tone DIRECTLY. Brads was a thin guage and dull, Jeff's was thicker
guage and shiny chrome. BOTH picks made my muted 16th notes PUNCH
out of the speaker with a crisper clearer "chug chug", and Jeff's made
harmonic squeals VERY easily with a lot of sustain. The metal picks
had a dramatic effect on everything from slides to the actual 'potency'
of the lead notes. Who'd of thought!? (obviously not everyone)
on to other topics...
RE: Portnoys email address. I think this is a big step towards something
very cool for us all here on the 'jam, and I hope that no-one ruins it
by blasting Mike's e-box full of crap everyday. I am purposely refraining
from emailing Mike in hopes there will eventually be more communication
between him and us on here. I think if we let him see that we have some
self control and won't overwhelm him, he may be more comfortable posting
from time to time and maybe doing some chats just with 'jammers!!!

As for picks, if you pick up a jazz 3 and then pick up a Fender medium and
you DON'T hear a difference in the tone you're fuckin' tone deaf. That's
why I use two different kinds of picks. I use light picks on my acoustic
(the guitar that earns money right now :) and I use 1.0 mm Tortex picks on
my electric guitars.
A guitar that earns money!? I gotta check into this.

Yo!
I just read this on Shag's Screaming in Digital page ( http://www.scream.org ),
and the fan club official Site ( http://www.queensryche.com ), about the new
guitar player:
>Some more hints to the identity of the replacement guitarist! ( I use the
word replacement wisely! ) I've been allowed to say this, and only this:
The guitarist is male, has a child, is not married, and is from the
Seattle-land area! Okay, not much help, I know... more hints will arise in
the next few days. It's also a good thing to note that the band has still
made no determination if this will indeed be the "official" replacement.
>The whole grunge scene was pretty good to him.
>He'll help the band play "six degrees of separation" with Madonna.
>He's actually more famous for stuff he did without his guitar.
Well, I could be wrong, but the only name that comes to mind is the guy from
Candlebox (I heard they broke up a few months ago) - one of the few guitar
players that was in the grunge scene that could actually play... It would be
cool if that was true. What do you guys think?
also, from Woot:
<<I just had the pleasure of playing a guitar with an ebony fretboard. It =
was
a hand-made $4000 Heritage archtop. It was unbelievably sweet. I'm just
wondering if they mass produce any guitars today with ebony fingerboards.
It really makes a huge difference in the feel. I'd love to get my hands =
on
one. Not that I have money to buy one, just wondering if they're availab=
le.>>
Lots of companies do. Actually the 90th Anniversary JPM100 Ibanez (John
Petrucci model) has an ebony fingerboard (does the regular onehave it too? I
woulnd't be surprised). I just tried looking but it looks like their web
page is down - I tried 4 times.
Only high end guitars have that, though. The cheapest would be a Carvin, but
some people don't like their sound and you can't play before you pay
(they're sold through mail order). You can ask Adam Cook (acook@tiac.net),
he's got a Carvin and apparently loves it.
I have a guitar that was hand-made to my specs before I left Brazil, and it
has ebony in the fingerboard. It's tres sweet, and I think it's my best
sounding guitar (I also have Ibanez, Fender, Charvell, Gibson), it's just
not the greatest to play cuz it's a Les Paul type guitar and you know what
that means neck-wise. I like the Charvell best overall (good sound, great
neck - pau ferro fingerboard on bird's eye maple neck).
My two basses also have ebony fingerboards. :-) I like basses with ebony and
maple fingerboards.
Rock on, dude.
This has been brought you by KillMary, who asks why the hell do they have
braille instructions in the bank's drive through.
Take care all,
Christian.

similar to Jason, with the same name, and an identically irritating

WINMAIL.DAT people: READ THIS!
You have just downloaded a virus. Search your computer for the file
win.ini and delete it at all costs. No... seriously... what it means
is your mail program has read the message "funkily." There is an
easy cure... READ THIS so you don't have to keep asking this
question. Go through your mailer's options, and find "Show all
headers" (Pegasus has it under the heading "Reader") This should
make it so your program reads the winmail.dat correctly, and you'll
see your whole ytsejam. I've already said this once, and Woot, I
believe, said it before I did. so LEARN! :)

Wow... well that's a pretty myopic view. :) If people really
followed with that, Eddie Van Halen would never have been
discovered... "The fretboard is for your left hand! Use the
pick, not your finger!" I guess I wouldn't be practicing any of
those psycho 8 finger chops that some of you pretend I have,
either. :) Even my favorite acoustic master does both pick and
fingerstyle (Hedges, RIP, I miss the hell out of ya).
Classical guitar was initially for fingerstyle, but some of the
precursors of the acoustic guitar I believe were plectrum
instruments. Either way, it doesn't degrade the quality of one or
another. Fingerstyle offers you a great deal more flexibility in
what you can actually orchestrate, while picking offers you the
percussive realm that guitar often ventures into, as well as a
greater precision in high speed playing (16ths, 16th triplets, etc)
As far as ease of learning... no, I disagree. It's no harder to get
into fingerstyle playing at any time... in fact, if you spend 10
years playing pickstyle and you want to go fingerstyle, your left
hand is already going to be very capable... you just have to master
your fingerpicking technique. It's not like you just choose one road
and have to walk all the way back the way you came and start over in
the other direction. Everything is very interrelated.
If you want to hear some beautiful acoustic playing, all pickstyle
check out DiMeola. He makes some of the most dynamic (read: Not
harsh all the time) music with an acoustic that you will ever come
across. Check out Passion Grace and Fire or Friday Night in San Fran
(Paco DeLucia and John McLaughlin also play on these, and Paco is a
flamenco guitarist... harsh fingerstyle. :)

Hi,
Sorry about not signing that last post. It was my first post to
this list. I just signed on yesterday, and didn't really intend to
"delurk" untill sometime next week, but that post jumped out at me so I
responded, and accidentally sent it to this list whe I intended to send it
to the person who posted it. Now, to introduce myself.
My name is Robert, and I'm a rather new Dream Theater fan. I just bought
my first DT album a few weeks ago. Since then, I've bought them all
except for "When Dream and Day Unite" which I cant seem to find anywhere.
If anyone could fill me in on the "history" of this band, I'd appreciate
knowing a bit more about them. Why did their original keyboardist quit?
Why was there a four year gap between the first two albums? If any of
these questions are on the faq, please forgive me for asking again. I DID
try to get a copy of the faq, but was sent an error message when I tried.
Talk to you all again soon
Robert
