You mean you USE a pick for accoustics? Accoustics were born to make ALL
of the fingers of BOTH of yours hands bleed until you can show off some
neat calluses. If you don't finger pick from the start, it's a rough deal
learning it, but it's SO worth it! Accoustics with a pick makes it sooo
harsh compared to the more mystical elements that come with running your
    fingers over the strings.

One thing I have to say, if you are looking for Prog CDs, The Laser's Edge
(http://www.jersey.net/~lasercd/) should be your first stop. They have
very reasonable prices on most CDs, and they have a lot of hard to find
Prog CDs in stock. I have found *no one* online that beats their prices
on more than a few titles.

When you do order, make sure that you call Ken Golden (Ken == Laser's
Edge) before you send your payment and make sure the CDs you want are in
stock and that you have the right price. This will save you the heartache
of getting the package and not having a couple CDs you ordered, and can
possibly trim some money off your order. When I ordered my Symphony-X CDs
from there, they were $15 instead of $19 as listed in the catalog, and
another CD had dropped from $12 to $4, so make sure you verify first.

If you see something that you want in the catalog, *do not hesitate*. Buy
it. I had a whole list of CDs that I 'planned' to buy from there a year
ago, and by the time I got off my ass and asked Ken, 90% of them were out
of stock or discontinued. So if they have it, move your ass.

And finally, don't panic. I have ordered from Ken 3 times, my cousin has
ordered twice, and my girlfriend once, and we have had no problems getting
what we ordered (because we called ahead of time and had him hold the
discs). Shipping time *does* vary greatly. Irene's order took exactly a
week, one of my cousin's took a little over a month. I know this is
frustrating when you are anxious to hear a new disc, but Ken is not out to
rip anyone off, so if it takes a couple weeks, just relax and listen to
    Liquid Tension Experiment. :)

And one last thing. Buy the new Symphony-X CD when Ken gets it, it's
great! If you haven't already foolishly forked over $30+ for the Japanese
import, you can wait another 20 or so days and pick it up from Ken for
$15. While you're at it, buy The Damnation Game and The Divine Wings of
Tragedy too. Every Jammer deserves to have this band in their CD
collection, and this band deserves to have your money.

One thing though. Don't buy Twilight In Olympus until I get my copy,
because if he runs out, I will personally send Mike Bahr's cousin Joey to
hunt you down and beat you silly.

    >Next they're gonna be saying "Hey! this new Guitar Strap gives me an all
    >new comfortable feeling and guess what? I play better!" Who cares!?!!??

I know people have commented about this, but I have a slightly different
    anecdote along these lines.

First off buddy, you are plain wrong. To make music you need equipment,
and if you dont have the right equipment, you just cant do it. Or at least
    do it how you want.

Anyway, I just noodle on guitar, but Im a pretty serious trumpet player. I
play a specific mouthpiece for orchestral, and a different one for jazz, a
different for higher playing, etc. And the cool thing about mouthpieces is
that all you have to do is take care of it and it lasts you for years.

I play a 1.5C bach primarily (any trumpet players out there might know what
Im talking about, believe me, this is relevant, I swear! : ) and I figured
that if it ever got screwed up that I would need a backup. So I went out
and bought the exact same mouthpiece, same measurements, same company, the
whole thing. When I got home, I noticed that the logo and measurement that
was engraved on the outside of the mouthpiece was slightly lighter than the
one I played regularly. And I realized this AFTER I put the mouthpiece in
a played for an hour or two...The whole time I was thinking my sound was
different, and it was, my teacher noticed it without me even telling him I
had changed anything. All the manufacturer had to do to alter the sound of
a piece of equipment they sold me was change the depth of the engraving
    machine.

Just goes to show that even though you may use standardized measurements
with certain pieces of equipment for whatever instrument you play, even
    THOSE may be different.

Shop around, and for gods sake listen carefully.

    Jon

Yes, the lead singer for Dangerous Toys WAS in
Watchtower for the first album. I believe he left
to join Dangerous Toys after that. And about a year
ago I heard that he has returned to Watchtower to
write and record their next album....Too bad I never
much liked Watchtower, but I DID like Toy's album
    "Pissed" !!!

Sorry for not using a subject. Anyway, I want to thank the guy who sent me
the Dance ofEternity dub. NOw, for some questions. Firstly, is there
anybody who can dub the following for me: some good Awake boots, any of
Mike Bahr's CDs except subconconscious, any of the xmas cds, any of the
1995 or 1996 shows that have good quality, anything from the 1997 tour,
majesty demos, instrumental CDs, or anything else I may be missing. I wish
I could actually buy these things, but I am poor and don't have much to
trade. I have Milan 93, the bootleg from IW, the silent man single, one
instrumental tape with wdadu demos, subconscious, and I think that's it.
Oh, I am alos looking for the lie single, and any other singles that have
unreleased material on them. If anybody can fill my quota of unreleased
material, then I would have something to trade if somebody wanted to
    trade.

Heck, my trip was even easier. I went up to Newbury Comics on my lunch hour, ran into the store, right there in the 'Misc. Quickest CD purchase I can remember, I wasn't in the store more than 50 seconds. :)

    Re: medleys

Personally, I think the best thing *I'd* like to hear would be a medley of all the songs they never play live. Put together a bunch of stuff from WDADU, maybe reworked ala CIA9ITG, maybe a couple other tunes, and viola.

Or, you can go the total lunatic route. Assuming a 2 hour set, do 2 45-minute medley jams, a break, then Met II as an encore. Honestly, who here wouldn't pay to see that show? :) _____Pat Sullivan_____________________________________ E-Mail: psull@ici.net WWW: http://www.just-like.nu IRC: DDictator ICQ: 2049374 ______________________________________________________ Amish bumper sticker: "Careful! Hey people! I got the Hollow Years single the other day, and I wanted to comment on You Or Me and TWIUTB.

You Or Me - I really don't understand what all the complaints are about with the Desmond Child intervention. This song sounds a lot like You Not Me. I think they should have kept that little bridge with Mike playing the double bass drums, but the rest of the song is pretty much the same. I personally think the chorus in You Not Me sounds better than the You Or Me version. Anyways, the point is that listening to this song you can see that DC did not change it that much from the original version.

TWIUTB - This song is really good. Liked it from the first listen. Excellent song that I think could have definitely made it into FII, but I wonder why it didn't. The keys solo is just beautiful.

    That's it!

Funny this should come up now, because just a couple nights ago I was blissfully isolated, in the followspot booth, from Burt Baccarach's musical extravaganza. This guy is responsible for writing and selling hordes of awful songs, all of which I caught only pieces of because he tried to fit every goddamn one in his show, in medley form.

As I sat back from where my spot was locked down, following this unmoving piano player, I remarked that I hate medleys. I do. They are cheese personified (except in the case of Gentle Giant's OCTOPUS medley, which is almost half new-song).

Okay, sure, Dream Theater has a lot of songs.

Chick Corea has played on more albums than I know. He has written more songs than I know. He came to the Center for the Performing Arts last summer, along with Gary Burton. They played no medleys. They didn't even get close to playing every song they knew, or even every insanely popular song. The audience didn't seem disappointed, not even at not hearing "Spain" (though it would have rocked my world if they had played it). I wasn't disappointed, either.

I just can't figure out the purpose of medleys (save for a lark--"Polka on 45," for example).

I'm going to assume either: 1) You're being sarcastic... (I hope so. I really do. I mean it.) or 2) You haven't seen the confirmations from people who would really truly know Mike's addy (Mike Bahr, for example, has confirmed the address). In which case, I pity you...

Ozzy Ozzy/Sabbath reunion Megadeth Tool Korn AC/DC

Seems a bit weird to me with all the big-name bands (AC/DC especially), but this certainly would make for a killer show. Can anyone validate/deny this "info"?

As a closer, a bit of movie info. To anyone contemplating viewing "Predator 2", I suggest either being very very drunk or lobotomized to get the full enjoyment. On the other hand, "The Big Lebowski"...don't miss thissun'. Just to give ya an idea of how good it is, Flea stars as a former member of the German electronic band Autobahn turned Nihilist thug. But you'll hear no more from me.

heh, I just bought LTE from Tower Records yesterday, and to my amazement they actually carried a copy of it. Just one copy though, that's all that was shipped in. Here's the funny part though, even though the computer said they had it, no one ever heard of it or could find it. Luckily the guy was nice enough to look all over the store and eventually found it in the dance music compilations section. Hehe, all they did was look at the front cover and assume it was dance music. Anyways, this album is absolutely phenomenal. Tony Levin does some fabulous work on bass, and he really interacts well with Portnoy. The album's range of styles also impressed me, i loved track #4, the funky track(don't have the CD by me for the titles) I listened even to three minute warning, and it blew me away. All in all, these guys showed the technical wizardry i expected and also some real groove as well, a fantastic album from four incredible musicians....

BTW, it seems as though they also never heard of Symphony X, now, I never heard of them before I joined this group a week ago. Here in New Orleans Progressive metal isn't exactly the big thing, so I'm looking for some good bands. I know about QR, DT, Yngwie(Though i haven't heard him, mp3's anywhere??) and Fates Warning, but I'm also looking for some other good music. Any suggestions would be great, I love the keyboards in much of the prog metal genre, and also the vocals tend to be pretty clean, which appeals to me. Anyways, any suggestions ya'll could give me would be appreciated, thanks... -- Geaux Tigers!!!! http://www.angelfire.com/la/qryche/index.html "I Know If I Try, I'll Get Where I'm Going/ Keeping My Eyes On the Sky" -"Some People Fly" by Queensryche
