    Greetings ye 'jamanoids...

In the ongoing, but somewhat irregular series of Mape's album reviews, you (all the two of you who care) are about to see two new episodes. The emphasis is today on Italian prog/metal. Here we go...

Empty Tremor:Apocolokyntosys (Rising Sun Productions/Pick Up Records)

Well, Italian melodic and technical prog metal...from the first bars of this disc it is evident that Empty Tremor are disciples of the almighty Dream Theater. Every note on "Apocolokyntosys" has the words "Images and Words" carved in them. Unlike most of the Italian bands I've heard Empty Tremor also has a very good singer. Giovanni De Luigi stays within his own vocal range and delivers the songs with great emotion and tone, although something in his voice leaves me with a "cold" impression. De Luigi's pronunciation of English is also almost flawless, which is another rarity among Italian singers. All members of Empty Tremor sound like prominent instrumentalists, if I understand anything about such things, being that I'm just a drummer, but I do know that the bassist and drummer are quite sick. The songs on "Apocolokyntosys" are catchy, yet progressive, the disc has approximately a million of tempo changes and the insane rhythm patterns make the listener stay fascinated for several spins. For those who tend to get emotional with music, there are some very beautiful keyboard passages too. :)

Despite the fact that the song structures and overall sounds on this CD evoke a ghost voice saying "imagesandwords, imagesandwords" in the listeners head, Empty Tremor is a very welcome addition to the field of Dream Theater-inspired progressive metal acts. Having heard Mayadome, Ivanhoe, Heads or Tales and a horde of other DT-wannabes, I'd say that Empty Tremor has enough of originality in them to make a real dirrenrence. If the way Dream Theater is currently heading does not please you as much as their previous efforts, this is the disc to get. Empty Tremor's keyboarder Daniele Liverani is just 23 years old and the rest of the bunch are even younger, it's downright scary what may be ahead for Empty Tremor. The best ever Italian progressive metal album has now seen the daylight.

Shadows of Steel:Shadows of Steel (Underground Symphony)

Shadows of Steel are from Italy and they play melodic speed metal with a lot of classical influences in the vein of Skylark and ja Rhapsody. There are some hints or progressive rock influences in their sound too, but not enough to justify pigeonholing this into progressive metal. There's way more attitude in Shadows of Steel than you could ever ask for, their singer calls himself "Wild Steel", which must be the corniest stage name ever and to add to the camp humour department, he even wears a metal mask somewhat similar to those of Crimson Glory. But for the music, Shadows of Steel is a whirlwind turned into music. Their songs gallop at 200 MPH for the most of the time, all the melodies are catchy as hell and the two first tracks of the album have what it takes to make them speed metal classics. The rest of the disc isn't all that much worse, but for all I care, Shadows of Steel could do better by dropping their random pokes at progressive metal in the middle of their 200 MPH songs. As you can probably guess, these "prog" parts are totally out of place here, they give me the same impression as a Formula CART running into a concrete wall and its motor stalling a ten seconds later only to start again and speeding away another ten seconds later. Wild Steel prononces English with a very irritating accent and his voice is a VERY high nasal vaice, which unintentinally slips into falsetto all too often, but once you get used to it, you'll accept it. Getting used to it may take more of your nerves than a nagging mother-in-law, though. In the usual Underground Symphony style, the disc production sucks hard and the musicians aren't quite as good as Rhapsody, who they obviously want to sound like, but you can't blame them for trying. Once Shadows of Steel decide to ditch their somewhat strange courtship with prog metal, they'll get even better than they are now.

    Rating: 8/10

Despite the public feedback, there will be more of this shit in some of the next jams. :)

Are there any RELIABLE suppliers of Yamaha or Carvin basses in existence? I'm looking towards buying a TRB6 or LB76 and I'd like to buy from either the US or Europe as it would cost about IR1800 to buy locally. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance,

Yes, but you must have a digital i/o sound board, like Zefiro's ZA/2.

    > 2) If I have a CD-R, can I record 4 songs that take up about 20 minutes and > then record 3 tracks later, and then another 3. No erasing, just adding to > the CD-R. Of course this would come from collecting DT rarities and slowly > building a CD of them.

Yes, you can add the tracks, but you'll have to keep the CD "open". When you finalize the CD (that's the name of the process), you won't be able to add any more songs. But finalizing is necessary for playing in most conventional CD players. If you don't finalize the disc, you will probably be able to hear the CD only in your computer.

But if recording from sources > other than CD is a pain in the ass, then I probably wouldn't bother.

I think it is, and then you have to make some sound edits to the sounds that you recorded, such as noise removal and other adjustments. Takes a lot of time (I'm assuming that you don't have a digital i/o card).

    > 4) How hard is it to record assembled tracks from many CD's onto a > CD-R? Sometimes I want to make best of CD's to listen at work, workout, > and in the car.

Not very hard. Just take the pile of CD, extract the songs (takes some time, but is a very easy job) and record the best-of CD.

    > 5) I heard if you record DATA to CD-R or CD-RW's that you don't get the > full 650 MB. Is this true?

No, this isn't true. If you record data, you'll be able to record 650MB (assuming that you're not using UDF/DirectCD, a new format to incrementally add data to the disc). If you record audio, you'll be able to record up to 74 minutes (approximately -- it depends on the brand of the disc and the software being used to record the material to the CD). That's because audio is recorded with less error correcting codes than data.

    > Please email me personally considering most people wouldn't want to hear > this stuff on the ytsejam@ax.com. I wouldn't put this on here, but I > don't want to talk to computer guys. They talk right over my head and > don't know how to answer the question I actually asked. I'm computer > literate, not computer smart.

I'm not a computer guy, you know. :-) I hate these damn machines that don't understand what I tell them to do. :-)

    To all readers,

First, I would like to say; I am a first time writer, long time reader. Now that is out of the way, I went to a Sam Goody's on the Monday, before the release of LTE t see if they would be getting a copy - Yes, One copy - which was in. The nice lady was going to get it for me went the manager said "We can't sell that to tomorrow, you'll have to come back." I asked if they could hold it for me and the answer was "No, but call first thing in the morning." I did and the answer was "No we don't have it anymore." I then called 11 other stores in the area I work in asking for it, 9 out of the 11 had no clue to what I was even talking about. I had 3 orders to get it in - No of which panned out. Still, this is Tuesday - - I went home to the Pocono's, and decide to try the little local dive music shop. I asked and they said "Here's your CD, we didn't think you would becoming in for it and we where going to put it out for sale." It was 7:40 and they were closing soon, so I may have curbed someone out of a LTE CD, but on the other hand it was late and I wanted it so.

People should care about what they listen to, until that day my friends we will forever be the better for caring about our taste in music. For as long as we strive to obtain a higher level in our own understanding - music is the doorway to our hearts, minds and very souls.

    Thanks- Kevin

He didn't know what wrestling show it was and since I'm not an avid "professional" wrestling (sounds like a double-negative, doesn't it:) fan, can anyone confirm this? I thought that DT fans would have more important things to do than attend studio wrestling events (like listening to LTE :)

Hi, there! Here's some cool news for ANGRA fans: the new E.P. will be released on the 5th of June and will contain 5 songs including one new song, cover of Manowar or Queensryche, "Make belief" (acoustic version), a traditional brazilian song and something else. The new album is scheduled to be released on the 4th of September this year. Angra will make a VERY SPECIAL appearance opening for Royal Hunt under a name "Carolina 4" and will play only cover songs. This will take place in Paris, France on the 18th of April in the venue called "Cafe de la Dance". The ticket price is $15. Take care.

    Hi everyone,

just got the LTE CD from World of Music in Hamburg, Germany. So, here's a couple a things:

Why didnt Kevin Shirley lay down such a nice TAMA drum sound on FII (it aint falling into infinity at least)? - on the LTE album you can really pick out its a Tama (just kidding). But the sound is great (cant be compared with the triggered stuff on Awake or so). Does anyone know something about his technique of soundmixing / producing? Someone wrote here in ytsejam digest that he discovered a Zidjian on the photo on the back. I can confirm that. Why so ever. Got a great sound. Though, why doesnt MP mention it on the inlay/thanx?

So LTE is available in Germany now and my next songs gonna be the 3 minute warning....

    Alex

Any drummers out there? What drums are you pounding on??

I can't speak for the Chicago area Best Buys, but I work in North Carolina, and every store here got 1 copt of LTE. Of course, the one for my store never made it out of the back room until I left for the day (the perks of being the Music supervisor!). I even had two people come in in the first hour asking for it, but I played dumb and sent them to the other two Charlotte stores. Just so you know, we at the store level have no say in which cd's we carry, it is all sent out by a central computer up in Minnesota, but sometimes we get some good things. I have gotten all of my non import DT stuff at Best Buy, and I have picked up most of my Helloween, LTE, Altura, and Artensionstuff here. We have also carried Threshold, and the Bozzio, Levins, & Stevens project down here.

If you can find it, look for a rare tori called Tori Stories... it's a 4 disc deal with stuff from when she used to sing in her father's church for weddings... tons of B side stuff and live performances. Also, look for Y Kant Tori Read if you like Tori *and* you were into 80s synth rock, because she was lead in that band... some of the lyrics are kind of cheasy, but as long as you dig the whole 80s synth stuff, it's really a fantastic album. There's also a rerelease of Y Kant Tori Read with her tracks from the movie Toys and a few of her other B sides.

For her normal albums, Boys for Pele is okay in varying degress... some of her most complex and beautiful songs are on that album, but so are her absolutely worst songs, so it's kind of interesting. Under the Pink and Earthquakes are both so worth having. :>

I have a lot of her rare stuff, so I might be willing to trade .. my DT collection isn't totally complete by any means...
