That's funny. There were two copies left when I arrived at Compact Disc
Warehouse on Saturday. I guess I got the next-to-last one.
This CD is amazing. Certainly in the running for best of the year (along
with Spock's Beard - KOS), and it's only April. I hope there's a sequel. A
tour would probably be too much to hope for...

Dark Side of the Moon just turned 25 today!!! Many radio stations in the
USA are going to play the albumin its entirety tonight (without
interuptions). check out http://www.memes.com/~tristandcw/its/index.html
for more information.
(sorry.. as much as I love DT, Pink Floyd is still my favourite band)
BTW: Got LTE (amazingly.. with no trouble.. walked into a store, looked
under the Dream Theater section.. and there it was! =) )
An AWESOME album. Not for everyone though.. but if you like long jam
sessions and improvisiont.. this is the one for you. Anyone out there
think that parts of 3 minute warning sound a bit like Phish in concert?
Speaking of Floyd and LTE.. if you like LTE and you like floyd.. check out
the band "The Machine". They are a Floyd cover band, but they often go on
30-40 minute incredible improv jam sessions between songs!
I am still in awe at the improvisition in 3 minute warning.. blows my
mind!

Hello Ystejammers!
In the department of IRC Chats The Artist Shop definitely has some big news!
We have another killer chat lined up for Sunday, March 29th at 5pm EST.
This is a joint chat with King Crimson & Peter Gabriel bassist Tony Levin
and experimental guitarist/loopmaster/sonic mayhem maker David Torn. On the
IRC page you'll find details on how to join the chat along with a cover
graphic and soundbites from the forthcoming Bruford/Levin Upper Extremities
album. This is not an album to miss! In April they will be hitting the
road on the east coast to support this album. Here is the latest update on
those gigs:
Bruford - Levin Upper Extremities
Bill Bruford -drums, percussion and a little keyboards
Tony Levin -basses and stick
Chris Botti -trumpet
David Torn -guitars and loops
CONFIRMED PERFORMANCE ITINERARY EAST COAST APRIL
1998:
April 13 New Haven / Toads Place
April 14 Philly / T.L.A.
April 15 Washington / Birchmere
April 17 Baltimore / Orion (2 shows)
April 18 New York / Knitting Factory (2 shows)
April 19 Boston (Cambridge)/House of Blues/Live Internet Broadcast
Note that April 19 will be part of a live internet broadcast! I don't have
information yet on how to access that netcast, but that's certainly a good
question for the chat, eh? Also you'll definitely want to ask questions
about Tony's participation in the new Magna Carta release, Liquid Tension
Experiment with keyboardist Jordan Rudess, guitarist John Petrucci and
drummer Mark Portnoy. This has just been released. You'll find it at
<http://www.artist-shop.com/magna>. This is one album I can't recommend
highly enough (Upper Extremities being another) and from every post I've
seen on it on Ytsejam, most of you feel the same way! Hope to see you at
the chat!

Ooh, put that flamethrower down, and hear me out yet. Now I'm no expert on
how much profits bands make off merchandize -- in fact, these topics
frighten and startle me. After all, I'm just a caveman... Er, not going
there. Anyhow, I reckon DT makes about as much money off a purchase of the
European single as the Japanese single, given all the crazy overseas
shipping and whatnot. So, if that extra $7 is just going to pay some
drunken sea-captain anyway, what's the point in arguing the morality of
MP3izing these songs? Who's with me, eh? Yeah! Yeah! The man's always

Well I have to have the worst LTE experience of all....
<nyahh nyahh ne nyahh nyahh>
I walk into my favorite CD shop (Tunes in Hoboken) and go to
the "L" section.
Lo and behold - one copy of it for $12.99........
I picked it up, went home and listened to it.....whew, tough one!
</nyahh nyahh ne nyahh nyahh>
Anyway, there's one track on there, later on in the disc, where
Petrucci plays some chords....the chords sound exactly like those
that he plays over the Chapman Stick in the beginning of "New
Millenium".......don't know the times off-hand, but I will post
them later on......
In general, the CD does kick much ass. I am not a guitarist,
drummer, keyboardist, or bassist - just a music appreciator -
and I lie the album a lot. Dunno if its going to have any
permanent stay in the CD player, but definitely a great piece
of musicianship.......and can Portnoy play that goddamn
double bass or what........on the one track, he rattles those
kicks like crazy!!!!

When I was reading the liners for LTE, I noticed that Portnoy
was possibly considering Dimebag (Diamond) Darrell as the
guitarist for LTE.
MY question is : How many 'Jammers think that Dimebag would
have been able to "fit in"....and what guitarists do you think
WOULD have been able to "fit in" or just plain handle LTE as
well as Petrucci did?
The only guitarist I could think of (am my scope is kinda limited)
would be Steve Vai. I'm not sure Satriani would be in the "fit
in" category of my question.....

At the John Petrucci guitar clinic last August, some asked about Jordan

of the Rudess is a prodigy and did sightread the songs at the
Foundations Forum gig.

Hi, like most of the ppl on this list...i got LTE....i got it a week ago to be exact...and im already tired of it... i dont know why.. but i think only paradigm shift, kindred spirits, freedom of speech and universal mind are the only tracks with any replay value ( specially freedom of speech..GOD!!) the other tracks...(and its not because theyre more bass oriented because i think the same of the ruddess/petrucci duo ) are very cool to hear for 2, 3 times..but after a while i dont know if im the only one.. but i skip tracks every time osmosis, or chris and kevins' comes on... and about 3 minute warning.. well... its a great piece..but ...it only seems to work when you have 28 minutes to actually sit down and listen to it...
Aside from that.. . the playing is incredible!! Mike is at his best with what i think its his best drum sound to date... and Jp is really shaping up his own sound.. as someone said before... Levin is equally awesome too...even thou i missed him during the unison parts..but his playing is amazing... Im not too crazy about Rudess thou...i just dont like his keyboard sounds..hes a great player.technically.. but as a matter of opinion i really dislike the sounds he chooses.. especially for rythim parts....dunno why... Still this is a great album and I hope i can find more replay value later..

Faster than Kevin Moore he is, but that's not what I feel is so great about Rudess. First of all, when comparing keyboardists one must realize that Rudess was a child prodigy who was accepted to Juilliard (one of the most famous classical music schools in the world) at age 9. This is also partly due to his perfect pitch (which is evident when he EXACTLY duplicates stuff that JP plays on 3 Minute Warning). Rudess has the speed on the keys of a classical pianist. However, he goes even beyond that. He uses the best Keyboard in the universe (Kurzweil K2000) to stretch to the limits and programs all his own sounds and truly turns just the aspect of sound programming on the keyboard into its own artform. His keyboard lines are rarely just duplications of the guitar line, except on those superfast dualing lines. Listen to the guitar keyboard dual on Universal Mind. I just find it so classy and refreshing when he slams down those bebop piano lines mixed in with the traditional driving synth lead....

Yup, everyone has that "problem". It's all explained by Mike Portnoy in the booklet (Mon. Sept. 22nd, 1997).

Can anybody please post here to the 'jam the liner notes. I still don't have Liquid Tension Experiment (it sucks to be in a place where I can hardly buy discs asking at the stores -- if I ask if they have the new side project from Dream Theater members, called "Liquid Tension Experiment", the only response I get is: "What?!?").
So, I'll have to order it from some on-line stores (it's good that computers don't have the same reaction to what I type than some humans have) and the curiosity to know about this "problem" is really killing me. I would be very grateful to know about these problems before I get the CD.

Well, the entire liner is a little longer than I feel like typing right now, but the "problem" that is being referred to here is that they jammed for so long on "Three Minute Warning" that the multitrack tape they were recording to ran out. Fortunately, MP had his personal 2-track DAT running, so the last minute or two was still recorded, although the sound quality isn't quite as good, and the sound drops out for a fraction of a second where the switch occurs. It does kind of break up the flow, but there really isn't anything they could do about it.
