    Roger...

Thanks for the info on Therion....I'll pass it on to my friend.....

As for the DT thing......I do happen to like both Pearl Jam & Obituary
("Cause of Death" rocks!) but I also happen to enjoy some good
    sarcasm.... :)

In fact I saw PJ live on Sunday....they weren't bad you know....Anyway
they were my fave band in 1991 when I was 14 or 15 years old.....good
    lyrics (sometimes)

Mind you I don't like them as much as DT...of course.....

(I'll have to find an oxygen free space to stop from getting flamed
    now!!)

Has anyone heard the new Blind Guardian.....

Night Falls on Middle Earth (or something!)....

    Is it good??

I hope so because I ordered it along with the Japanese Import
    LTE.......hope they come soon....

    >This is also partly due to his perfect pitch (which is evident when he EXACTLY >duplicates stuff that JP plays on 3 Minute Warning).

Thats pretty much where I said to myself "wow, this guy is good." Just remember though, perfect pitch does not an awesome musician make. My uncle has the disease, and he was never very good at anything but picking out what notes were being played when my mom sat on the piano.

Absolute pitch sure helps though, especially in these kinds of jamming situations...But its also possible to do the note-duplication thing if you have good relative pitch. Just know what key you are in, and be able to hear the difference between the intervals that are being played.

As LTE was my first exposure to Rudess, I think he is a pretty damn talented guy. But has anyone taken a look at his webpage? He calls himself the keyboard wizard or something stupid like that. You dont see MP calling himself the drum shaaman or JP the guitar guru...I dont know, kinda struck the wrong chord for me.

    Back to finals baby.

Well this is the first VH album I've ever bought, as I haven't been much = of a VH fan through the years, but Gary Cherone just kicks too much butt for= me not to start liking VH now. :)

The individual songs could be stronger, but the album as a whole is very cool. EVH didn't really do much in the way of "wow he's good," but his playing is solid throughout. I respect the fact that he doesn't show off= , but I do think he needs to do a bit more with his chops. He doesn't real= ly live up to his "best guitarist ever" image, not that I ever believed that= in the first place.

It's cool that he decided to take the lead vocals on a song just like Chr= is Degarmo did on QR's latest, but the difference is that CD can actually si= ng. ;)

Alex isn't technically good, but he has a very unique sound that fits the songs perfectly.

I still think Michael isn't worthy to play in the same room with Eddie, b= ut he's solid, even if not very interesting.

Gary did a marvelous job, and his funky style greatly influenced the song= s, even beyond the vocals. I did notice that he's kinda trying too hard to sound like Sammy in places.

Get high on ether when there's no one in the house. Pretend it's the big one the moment you pass out. That's just rehearsal, but it's comforting somehow To practice dying now.

I can't say about Dimebag Darrell, but an answer for the second part is easy. Considering the presence of Tony Levin, the guitarist of choice is Robert Fripp. The guy plays in all sorts of projects, masterfully. The man also can improvise, and this is what I'm going to ramble on presently.

Fripp can be noisy--as in atonal--as can be seen by getting Tony Levin and him together for a third of THRaKaTTaK. Fripp can ease up, though. I hear the ProjeKCt gigs aren't incredibly unmusical. John Petrucci, however, is very very noisy--intrustive--in "Three Minute Warning."

It seems to me that where Levin and Rudess offer musical ideas, sometimes Petrucci go into a standardized blistering run which makes the other instruments almost impossible to hear. For all that I like this song, Trey Anastasio or Robert Fripp would have brought a bit more magic for me.

At the very least, JP should have been mixed a little softer in parts. Yes, he's the guitarist, but that doesn't really mean he has to be loudest.

When I was reading the liners for LTE, I noticed that Portnoy was possibly considering Dimebag (Diamond) Darrell as the guitarist for LTE.

MY question is : How many 'Jammers think that Dimebag would have been able to "fit in"....and what guitarists do you think WOULD have been able to "fit in" or just plain handle LTE as well as Petrucci did? The only guitarist I could think of (am my scope is kinda limited) would be Steve Vai. I'm not sure Satriani would be in the "fit in" category of my question.....

The result of LTE is what each of the four musicians brought to it. would Dimebag 'fit in' as you describe it? Sure. Would the outcome be drastically different? You bet. Anyone else playing guitar on that album would've made a substantial difference in almost every aspect musically. The greatness about it was that it was quite literally an "experiment". The experiment being bringing four talented musicians together in a studio and observing the outcome. Please don't ask me whether I prefer DD or JP's playing, as it is not relevant to the discussion! Yamaha would not be that irresponsible. I assumed you had just made a mistake, seeing as Ibanez has a couple NEW JPM models coming out... they wouldn't have showcased these at NAMM if Petrucci was leaving, and Petrucci wouldn't leave Ibanez on short notice (it's an endorsement... competitors won't offer millions of dollars for him, and Ibanez isn't going to be able to find a way to "piss him off" or anything). But now I'm curious... where did you hear the rumor, if it wasn't just a mix up? I'd bet my farm that the person who told you (or maybe earlier on up theline) just made this mistake. As I said, Yamaha would NOT be that careless.

    hey ytsejammers,

I have taken some great pictures of Dream Theaters concert in Belgium (february 26). They are available at http://www.kulak.ac.be/~dcaillia/ You caan see: Mike drumming with someone in the audience, Mike singing Anna Lee (and saying 'where the fuck is James??'), and others... Check out the songs there too. 'Nomen Nescio' plays progressive metal and sounds very powerfull. If you like Dream Theaater, i think you'll like Nomen Nescio too!

    Hi all,

Paul> Has anyone heard the new Blind Guardian.....

Ah yes, something in my area of expertise *evil grin*.

Paul> Night Falls on Middle Earth (or something!)....

The new CD is called _Nightfall in Middle-Earth_ and it is a concept disc based on the _Silmarillion_ by Tolkien. It is going to be released in Germany on April 29th (and maybe a little earlier in Japan although I am not sure about this yet).

    Paul> Is it good??

Hey it is Blind Guardian, how couldn't it be good *grin*? Ok, maybe I am a bit biased since I do their homepage. But if you want to listen to some sound samples from the new CD check out the news section of the Official Blind Guardian Homepage at:

    http://www.blind-guardian.com

I don't think you will be disappointed in the songs. Although don't go in thinking they are like DT. BG is a power metal band NOT a prog-metal band. I like to call BG Elf-Metal myself *grin*.

Hope this helps a bit. Talk to you all later.
