I just read a strange bit of news. This guitarist from Virgin Steele (one
of my favorites you'll recall) who was with them until '84 or so --
granted VS is better now than ever without him, but he's still great. His
name is Jack Starr ... anyway, last summer he was working with none
other than Chris Collins... bet you never thought he'd turn up again!

No, it seems to be very same Kiss The Stone Records from Italy (of
course, I can't guarantee, but hey, who can if they're behind a
computer?). If you want to check that, just go to <www.kissthestone.com>.
And they have all the Dream Theater bootlegs in stock ("Mind
Control", "Dream Out Loud" and "Lords of Sound").

Hope you find this hint useful, Roger...
P.S.: They have lowered their prices too: each CD costs US$17.

Well, you never forget your first...
My first Genesis album was "Duke". To me it's a classic. When I first heard Images and Words, it reminded me of Duke. On Duke, they reprise musical ideas in different songs. Simliar to what DT does. My first thought was that these guys in DT must have been fans of Genesis (Duke) also. This was confirmed when DT played a song from Duke on ACoS.
Unfortunately, over time, many of the songs from Duke became big hits, long after release. (OK, this was good for Genesis). So if you listen to this disc now, you will already be familiar with many of the songs, and consider them "pop" (maybe even cheese). Before radio discovered Genesis/Duke, it was more like DT; popular with the fans, ignored by the masses.

I would agree here. First off, I think that Cherone naturally sounds like Sammy, and that that must have been part of the reason why they picked him. I personally liked Sammy's voice much better than DLR's... The new CD is interesting... will take some getting used to, and I think that it also will grow on me... first time I listened to it, I wasn't too sure... second listen, I liked it a little more... going to give it a 3rd listen tonight...

I agree here... mine came w/ Easy-CD Pro, and I just upgraded to Easy CD-Creator, and it is fairly easy to use, once you get used to it. Also, from what I hear, you need to buy special discs to use for a home stereo CD-R, which are much more expensive (~$15 compared to $0-$2 for blank computer CD-Rs (yes, that is free - $2)). Also, I am pretty sure that you will only be able to make the single dub of a CD, and not copy a copy, w/o soem trickery (like forcing the CD-R door open and replacing the blank before the writer starts writing), or something to that effect... all in all, I think you get a much better product w/ a computer based CD-R...

Kotzen has had several albums released. On Shrapnel, he has at least 6 available (http://www.shrapnelrecords.com) and I know there's between 1-3 Japanese discs, all of which are nothing like his old shred self. The Shrapnel discs are all great (2 of them are collaborations with Greg Howe)

Because he has his Fast Track in middle position. There are no balls to be had in that position.

So you heard a couple albums he produced... and you liked them... and you decide that he's not good enough to join QR? Where's the logic I'm missing? I think you left out the part about hearing him play, and not liking it, right? I mean... you're not basing this on absolutely NOTHING, are you?

Well, as someone mentioned, KTS appears to be back, now in Singapore... just checked through a whois. They say that they will do mail order from their website, http://www.kissthestone.com/ and it looks like they have the same old DT CDs listed, at $17/disc (so Lords of Sound & Mind Control are $17.) They have a coming soon section, which as of now, has nothing... should be interesting... now, who wants to be the first to order from them? :) (already have all of their DT CDs, so none that I need to order... :) Here is their Whois record:

heheh. That's not as bad as a guy I work with who thinks every singer on every album I have is Bruce Dickinson. heheh. He's an old IM fan.
I bought VH3 today and I have to say, I only made it halfway through and I loved every minute of it. IMO, Gary is trying to sound like Sammy, but that'll probably not be the case at the concerts. I don't think Gary can keep up the gravel-throat vocals that long without smoking three pack of cigs a day (which he probably does anyway). But for the most part, it still sounds like Gary to me. A little more of the Extreme funk mixed in with a classic VH sound. It really flows with my lobster meal.
So what's the general appeal to the masses anyway? The guy at the record store said that the general consensus around where I live was about 95% shit. But then, refer to the recent Dave Mustaine statement for a clarification on that.

>new ideas AND THAT METROPOLIS part II WILL BE ON THAT NEW >ALBUM!!! So lets hope his words come out and there will be no change
You know, I hate to be the bubble burster and all, but I pray that they either trim this sucker alot, make the whole album a Met II concept, or scrap it for an EP. For one, I like long songs, but the average person (and I think DT wants average people to like them, too) detests them. I have friends who won't even try listening to them when I mention 9 minute songs. People on average think in time frames. If the song lasts longer than it takes them to take a shit, then they don't have time to listen to it. I take long shits (much to the chagrin of my boss) so I can handle long songs. Most people are in a big rush, run in, pinch it off halfway, and run out without washing their hands. That's why Green Day and radio songs are so popular. They're short and basic and dirty. Therefore people who listen to Dream Theater and similar bands are people who feel they have time to listen to long songs. In circumspect, people who feel they have free time are either a)lazy, b)procrastinators, or c)in some mental detention center. So....
We're are lazy clean people who have too much free time and need to pinch our turds, or some of us talk to flagpoles and somehow got internet access.
And that's why DT needs to trim Metropolis II. --KorgX3

I've not heard it mentioned here before, so I gotta ask. Does anyone own or ever heard the "Lido Beach Party" boot? It was recorded in Long Island on 06/13/95. It's a double-cd and has a definite "we're on home terf" laid-back quality to it. (I do not mean tempo-wise) So in that respect I think it's a cool listen.
Sound-wise, IMO, it kinda reeks. I gotta be honest, this is the first and only boot I've ever bought. So I really have nothing to compare it to.
It's also gotta be embarassing for Derek that this night was etched in time on a recording, as he fumbled horribly on a couple tracks. It makes me want to join in on the argument-"why did they pick Derek?!?!"
Is anyone else familiar with these discs?

Hey Jammers,
I guess Damon's wish for keyboardist recognition has come true because the ytsejam is becoming a message board for bands in search of keyboardists. I'm a drummer (hi Mike), and I just joined a local band in Houston that needs a keyboardist. Our music is hard rock, technical and progessive at times, but sometimes more basic 4/4 stuff. The former bassist for Helstar, Jerry Abarca, is in it -- right now anyway. He's a busy guy, and he's not 100% sure he can commit to the band, but we'll see.
One reason Jerry's busy: he does occasional reunion shows w/ Helstar, and one is this Friday night (3/20) at Cardi's in Houston. Email me for more details. And again, if you're a Houston area keyboardist or know one, please let me know.

Date: Wed, 18 Mar 1998 22:26:46 -0700 From: Michael and Melissa Bahr <durnik@goodnet.com> To: ytsejam@ax.com Subject: CDRs 4x and stuff Message-ID: <3510AC96.6A1D@goodnet.com>
I'll be adding a link to my page shortly so people can find out more about these. You can burn 4x CDRs reliably even on a P-100 with IDE hard drives and an ISA SCSI card... I've done it for years. It's just a matter of making sure you turn off screen savers, virus protection, and so forth, so that your system runs as unencumbered as possible.
If you were to get into CDR, the best thing to do is buy your reader and writer at the same time so that they match. This is important because programs like DirectCD can use matching hardware to do some pretty intense writing operations, such as bit-for-bit copies on the Plextor rig even of PSX discs that leave the error bits intact and can be played on unmodified consoles!
More info will follow, but the quick and easy of it, if you want to get into burning CDs, is to get:
1. An Adaptec UW-2940 PCI SCSI card or on-board PCI bus-mastering SCSI. Technically you could get away without this... I still only use ISA SCSI in both machines... but better to do it right from the get go if you possibly can.
2. One of the following matched sets of units (all devices SCSI): a. PlexWriter 4x12 CDR and Plextor Multiread 12/20 CDROM. b. Teac CDR55S 4x12 CDR and Teac 516S 16x or 556S 32X CDROM. c. Yamaha 4x6 CDR and Sony CDU76S 4x CDROM.
Option C is for the budget-minded. They are different brands, true, but they match. Trust me. At least, DirectCD seems to think so, as much as it sees A and B as matches. Yamaha must use Sony BIOS or something like that. Option A is by far the best. With Plextor as your rig, there's nothing you can't burn. You can even burn protected stuff and the drives just ignore all the tricks and traps. Alas, Option A will run you around $700. Wish I could afford it.
3. At least a P100, but P200MMX boxed are $140, so there's no real reason not to just upgrade.
4. Do not, so long as you live, buy a burner from Hewlett Packard. Half the traffic in comp.publish.cdrom.hardware every day is complaints about the HP 7xxx line. The other half are complaints about JVC, Philips, and Ricoh drives, though the Ricoh complaints have subsided somewhat now that their drives seem to have improved.
Happy burning!!
