Just picked up Van Halen 3. I was quite pleased that Gary hasn't lost
his roots. As always, his lyrics are somewhat circumspect, with irony
and double entendre, but they still do carry some meat. The lyrics are
somewhat weaker, as a whole, I guess to cater to the larger, somewhat
less intelligent, less reflective VH audience (not that everyone who
likes VH is necessarily somewhat less intelligent, less reflective!).
Gary probably had a lot more freedom in writing lyrics with Extreme.
None of that ol' party-music, at least not on the CD. But what really
caught my eye, and what many, probably most, will miss in the credits is
the Special Thanks to R. C. Sproul. If you don't know who he is, find
out...
On another note: has anyone else noticed that on KX's Ear Candy there is
a song called "Lies in the Sand", while KX's Doug Pinnick is the guest
vocalist on DT's "Lines in the Sand"?

I have mentioned Doctor Nerve on this list a while ago. But it seemed like
noone in this list liked this kind of music. I am glad you mentioned them
again. I do not have the album that you have. I have "Skin" and "Every
Screaming Ear". IMHO, Skin is easier to get into at the first listen. If
you are in NYC, you would be able to see Doctor Nerve live sometimes. Try
to get "Beta 14k" or something like that. I heard some sound clips from
their page and it was good.
Most of the bands from Cuneiform records are worth listening. The bands I
have heard from this record company are Univers Zero (very dark, my
favourite band), Present (a bit dark but not as much as Univers Zero), Soft
Machine, Miriodor, Henry Kaiser (very good experimental guitar), Forrest
Fang (from SFF), 5 UU's and Doctor Nerve. Watch out for Present, they will
be playing in the States in May.
I have never heard anything by Philharmonie and Djam Karet before. I'm
looking forword to get some cd's soon.

You do not have to say sorry. It's good to mention to those obscured prog
bands once in a while. I have heard Discipline and Ozone Quartet (Cloud
Nine) from the Progday'95 cd. I am looking for the new album of Discipline
but it seems like I will have to order it from the band itself.
Do you know Ground Zero and Zoviet France?

Now that we are talking about CD-R's and CD-R software, I'd like
to ask a question to all knowing jammers here...
Is there a software package that lets you record a full CD from a
single .WAV file where you can write some sort of cue sheet telling
it where, for example, each of the 15 tracks starts and ends?
I have used the DAO software to do something like this...But it seems
to only let me specify the beginning of the individual tracks and not
the end. Hence, if I want to end track #10 at 43:00.00 and begin
track eleven 5 seconds after that at 43:05.00 (say if I had 5 seconds of
garbage or something).
Someone told me that the Adaptec CD Creator Deluxe package could do this,
but I haven't yet figured it out.

i decided i had to play guitar after hearing Master of Puppets by Metallica,
then i only really cared to play power chords and get long hair and chicks,
thats when i first got into metal, about a year later i started listening to
ozzie, and older ozzie, then i really got into Randy's playing, i must say he
was a major influence on my guitar playing, and he's the one who made me want
to play lead guitar, and made me want to practice like a madman. but my life
as a whole goes to steve vai for making me want to be real with music, and
listening to his passion and warfare really made me appreciate music for what
it is, and ispired my music to come from the heart, and over all made me quit
heavy drugs and heavy drinking that i was into at the time.

With all the talk about TA here on the Jam, I decided to check out LE to
satisfy my curiosity.
Until now, my only experiences with TA was that song ages ago called
"Cornflake Girl", and that terrible techno-ish "Professional Widow", so
I assumed that LE must be something quite different if it's so highly
regarded on the JAM.
So anyway, I go down and fork out the dosh at my local record store, get
home and whack it in the CD player ...
.. no disapointments here folks. I was genuinely shotshicked at how
good this album was, especially the songs Precious Things and Winter
(the DT cover just doesn't do this justice).
This chick just oozes talent, no doubt about it.
Anyone who likes any Loreena McKennitt's work, I recommend to check out
LE, and likewise, anyone who likes TA's stuff should check out The Book
Of Secrets or The Mask & Mirror by LM.

On the subject of shortening songs......are you nuts! Long songs are what
separates DT from most of the other goups out there. A Change of Seasons is
one of my favorite CD's mainly due to half of the CD is only one song. I
would love to see DT put out a 70 minute CD that was only one song. How many
"super groups" out there today making millions of dollars have the talent to
write a 15 minute song and carry it off? Not many.

Funny, I sorta measure the time it takes me to get to work in the
number of songs that I get through on the way... so a DT CD makes
the ride nice and short... :) Hey, less than 2 ACOS makes the drive
seem quick... (I think that we need to make a new standard time
reference as one ACOS :)

Think I would sorta disagree here... on my 2x burner, I use the
_cheap_ Adaptec SCSI card that came with the burner, under NT, and
have no problems w/ buffer underruns or anything (according to the
program, never get the buffer under 95% full) and this is with virus,
etc enabled. I do keep the screen saver off. One definate
recommendation is to turn off power saving (especially HD spin down).
I think the most important issue for burning a CD is amount of RAM in
the system, never had problems w/ my system, a P120, w/ 48 MB RAM, and
now never have had the buffer under 100% now that I have 96MB.

As for the Metropolis Part II, I don't think DT will ever be a radio
oriented group. I mean, they've had songs on the radio and all, but
they're not your typical group. I don't think that shortening
Metropolis would be a good thing at all, considering they need to KEEP
the fans they have right now...:) I mean, i'd love anything they'd
play, but we all love the long songs, and all the instrumentals; make it
shorter, and you get nothing but more LaBrie, which isn't exactly what I
want(He's not bad, but he does get irratating after awhile, just give me
more portnoy, petrucci, myung, and sherinian!!!)
Also, I don't really know much about this new guy for QR, can somebody
fill me in on him, past groups he's played with, and all??? Is he an
improvement over DeGarmo?? And will he be pushed back to rhythm while
Wilton becomes lead(yes!!!)??? Also, I hope Wilton and Tate write alot
of the stuff now, it'll be VERY interesting to see what they come up
with, sorry for my ignorance, but at least i'm trying to do something
about it...:)

Well, Let me disagree with you there, I do wonderful with my HP drive, I
have a 7020 internal, and it's a beauty, the ones that are literal shit
are:Memorex, Hi-Val, and Ricoh. Philips drives also seem like they burn
out after awhile, my dad is on his third Philips drive, but when they
work, they work almost flawlessly. As for readers, I agree, Plextor is
best, with Teac not too far behind. I've got a question though, email
me privately if you want, since this isn't really music related, but
with a Plextor CD-ROM, and a Philips CD-RW, would I be able to do exact
copes of PSX CD's, error bit and all????

Just got back from a trip to Boston and I thought I'd share my
insight (or lack thereof) regarding some topics that have arisen in my
absence:
LTE- Finally found it at the Tower in Boston (now THAT'S a record store).
Snagged the only copy there. For future reference, it wasn't under "L" in
the "Rock" section. It's in the "Metal" section and it has it's own
divider. I've only listened to it twice on the car ride home, but I have
to say that it is MUCH better than I thought it would be. A lot of times
you get amazing musicians together and everyone is stepping on each
other's toes. Not so here. There is a real "band" chemistry here and the
songs benefit from it. Everyone seems to know instinctively when to shine
and when to support, which is rare. In all honesty, however, the 20 minute
jam at the end did little for me. Yes, it's amazing that it was a total
jam. But it didn't strike me as much as the other stuff. But the album as
a whole is amazing.
VH III- For me this was one of the most anticipated releases of the year
(next to Bret Michaels' and Jani Lane's solo albums, but I've been waiting
for those forever). Having been a HUGE fan of Extreme and a huge fan of
Hagar-era VH, I was curious to see how the two would blend together. And
I'll be honest, I'm not as blown away as I thought I would be. "Without
You," "Dirty Water Dog," "Once," "Ballot or The Bullet" "One I Want" and
"Fire In The Hole" are the only real standouts. Whatever happened to the
hooks that both bands used to have? Stuff like "From Afar" is just plain
weird, "A Year To The Day" proves that there should only be one Led
Zeppelin, "Josephina" could have been SO much better, and "How Many Say I"
was only a reminder of how good a singer GARY is. I'm not totally writing
them off. There is potential here. I bet some of this material will go
over better live, which I will definitely be there to witness. At least I
hope it will.
Union- Since someone asked a while back, yes, the Union album (featuring
ex- Motley Crue singer John Corabi and ex-KISS guitarist Bruce Kulick)
rocks hard, but again, as was the case with the VH album, the hooks seem
to be missing. The song the original poster probably heard on the radio
was "Old Man Wise." If you like that song, you'll LOVE the album. There
are some catchy songs like "Pain Behind Your Eyes," "Tangerine," "October
Morning Wind," "Love (I Don't Need It Anymore), but the majority of them
(OMW included) are very reminicent of the Crue album that John sang on and
the most recent KISS album "Carnival Of Souls." Both those albums are long
on attitude, short on hooks. But again, Union isn't bad.

Uh... OK... No seriously though. I didn't say that I personally wanted
them to trim Met2. Hell, I'd love it if it were a 70 minute song as much as
anything. All I was saying is that long songs lack commercial appeal.
Radio generally won't play anything from it (unless of course it's broken
into decipherable parts that are still radio friendly) and the average
consumer will just go, "Ack!" and leave it. But, then they can always take
bits and pieces from the overall song and compress it into a 5 minute radio
song. Sorta like the terrible entity that became the Take the Time video.
But, hell, fuck us! I say the band chooses what they want to do. :) I'd
rather see them obtain unrestrained creative freedom and write what they
want whether or not anyone else likes it. I'd just like to see them all
driving Ferraris next year, too, cuz they deserve it, IMO.
Just keep that food on the table. Who'd wanna go on an Appalachian hunting
party with Mike and Derek with only a Bowie knife and 50 ft. of dental
floss? Sounds like fun to me. Just as long as we didn't get caught
poaching Uncle Velmer's dachtsun pack I think it'd rule. Dachtsun's taste
great with about anything except crayfish and albatross.
