    Heh, heh, heh, it IS your opinion, because the sky is actually clear.
    It just appears blue.
    Unless you live in Seattle like me, where it appears grey. :)

    Has anyone else's order from the Laser's Edge taken an ABSURDLY
    long time to get to you? I ordered SIX weeks ago. I contacted Ken
    after three and he said credit card orders take longer.
    Great catalog and selection, but service? Especially since my order
    was around $350!
    Just venting, thanks,

    Sentinel Steel, based in New Jersey, is a fine place to deal with. Denis
    Gulbey has a great selection of progressive and power metal (he calls it
    "True Metal") and his prices are insanely low. I've ordered from him
    several times and usually have it within two weeks.

    You can reach Sentinel Steel via postal mail at

    Sentinel Steel
    P.O. Box 123
    Rockaway, NJ 07866 USA

    Phone or fax at (973) 691-5859; ask for a catalog. You'll be glad you did.
    Great place.

    Ta,
    Phil

    The Magna Carta website was updated yesterday. It says:

    <<<Trent Gardner (Magellan) has been working on a new project "The Age Of
    Impact," which Terry
    Bozzio has laid down the drums for. Notable guests will include John Petrucci
    and Derek
    Sherinian (both of Dream Theater) and Billy Sheehan (Mr Big, Talas, David Lee
    Roth). Special
    guest vocalists, including John Wetton, will be added to the mix as well, more
    info as it becomes
    available. This album will be out June 23, 1998.

    Shadow Gallery . . .
    is working away on their next release, "Tyranny", also for September 25, 1998.
    The band is
    promising this album to be even more powerful than their previous efforts.
    ]From the one advance
    track I've heard so far, this is a winner. The same agressive/progressive
    guitar sounds as their previous
    efforts.>>>

           I've been hearing about a lot of Dream Theater side projects
           and participations in side projects and I thought that it
           would be instructive to list them all. So far the list below
           is everything that I know of which includes works by Dream
           Theater members. Please, could you complete it??

           * Liquid Tension Experiment;
           * The Age of Impact;
           * Explorer's Club;
           * Platypus;
           * Chroma Key (not exactly a DT side project, but DT related);
           * Dragon Attack (tribute to Queen);
           * Working Man (tribute to Rush).

           Please, post to the jam.

    >As kind of an aside, is there bad blood between Bruce and Steve? The >comment about recording would lead me to think so... > >-David

    There isn't really any bad blood between them, I think the last time the two spoke was around Christmas of 1994 though. What Bruce said about recording is he (and Adrian agreed) that they would never want to do another record with Steve, because he's apparently difficult to work with in the recording process. I'm sure Dave and Janick and Blaze don't have much problem with it, because they weren't as prominent writers as Bruce and Adrian were, and Bruce and Adrian felt stifled in the writing and recording process. That's the main problem Bruce has with Steve. He said in a recent interview that "there are plenty of Steve Harris fans out there, and I'm a Steve Harris fan too. But not all the time."

    Not a bad idea...there certainly are a lot of them. FAQ material, maybe?

    > * The Age of Impact; > * Explorer's Club;

    Actually, this is just one - "Age of Impact" by Explorer's Club.

    There's also that pinball game JP wrote some music for (whose name escapes me at the moment).

    Really? You never heard that one? That was thrown around a lot on the Jam just after I&W came out (yes, I've been here that long).

    MM is when a band seems to be playing for their own benefit rather than the listener's. Since DT would often play several minute intervals without vocals, they were accused by some of "musical masturbation." I'm NOT of that opinion, though. I like I&W's long instrumental sections -- you might say I get off on them.

    one band you seem to have forgotten was Chicago, who did Chicago II in 1968, with it being(now) two CD's(I know, I know, it wasn't CD's back then), the second CD containing two very long pieces, from the classical sounding "Memories of Love"(which I believe is about 12 minutes or so to the jazz-rock sound that they are associated with in "It Better End Soon"(about 20 minutes I believe, but don't quote me). Any of you who like horns and lots of jazz influence in your rock, check them out, one of my all time fav bands(remember though, it's jazz-rock, not prog-metal) -- Geaux Tigers!!!! http://www.angelfire.com/la/qryche/index.html "I Know If I Try, I'll Get Where I'm Going/ Keeping My Eyes On the Sky" -"Some People Fly" by Queensryche

    > From: Mauricio Martinez Villarreal <al769526@mail.mty.itesm.mx> > Subject: Re: Roland Rupp

    This is exactly one of the kinds of responses I expected. The "I know him, and I know he can play!" response. I never said he couldn't play. The songs are decently well written, and though he was hanging on and repeating some of the same "licks" a bit much, it wasn't bad. But it was sped up. I've showed 5 people now, and they all say it was sped up. The vibrato, the tapping, and the picking all exhibit sound qualities that are not possible (and wouldn't be something one would do on purpose... you wouldn't purposely make your vibrato go so fast as to make it sound bad) and some of the licks are just not right sounding... I mean, there are guys who can get close to the speed of some of those licks, but the notes take on a different tone when you're going as fast as he is supposedly playing. Then there's another issue. Is he playing a Hamer Californian? How many frets does that guitar have on it? More than 24, that's for certain, if this is in fact legit. The way I see it, there are two possibilities. The tape was recorded into the computer on a shitty tape player, and these are supposed to be slower and in a lower pitch, or Roland (or Alan) sped up the tape (in the recording or when making the sound clips) purposely to make him sound faster than he is. Either way, I pit my 9 years of guitar playing and my considerable library of guitar music against the possibility that this is legitimate. It's like this. If you tell me there's a dog in Iowa that can speak Hebrew, I'm not gonna believe it until I see some proof. If you tell me that this is legit guitar playing, I won't believe you until you present some proof.

    Hi

    Finally, I've got my LTE :-)))))) I really love this album. I love this kind of Fusion/Prog combination.

    My favorits tracks :

    Paradigm Shift Kinderd Sprits Freedom Of Speech State Of Grace <--- this one is soooooo beautiful. Some kind of "EVE-Part II". and Universal Mind

    Mike Portony is just incredible. I don't like the Bass/Stick sound of Tony Levin.

    I bought my copy in Germany but on the CD liners/Back cover, there's nothing about ROADRUNNER like my Shadow Gallery CD's !!! The distributer for Germany is Rough Trade NOT Roadrunner. In the Record Shop, they had only 1 copy (which is no mine) in their stock ! It's such a shame, they have exactly 45 copies of Stratovarius - Visions Of Europe or 32 copies of Vanden Plas - The God Thing, but no Superior, only 1 Empty Tremor, 1 Spock's Beard and 1 Cario.

    OK, I have been quiet on this topic, so far. The more I listen to Derek, the more I like his unique sound. Thats right, I said unique. At first I thought he was a John Lord clone. But he does have a sound all his own. I grew up on Deep Purple, so if you ask if I like the gurgling Hammond sound, yes I do. I wish Derek would use the real McCoy live and in the studio, and mic off the Leslies. Sometimes the Korgs reproduction of that sound sucks! OK, most times. Derek is a talented musician that fits in well with his peers. I think we should be thankful that he is willing to dedicate so much of his life, so we can have something to debate. It least when he=92s on stage, he does not look like he=92s on ludes. He could tone things down a little though. And I not talking about his ELECTRIC organ. Hehe :)

    PS. Jordan kicks ass!
