I just wanted to toss in on this little joyride.

Symphony X is, from a balls and chunk or technical guitar playing standpoint, probably the most ideal prog metal band around. They're heavy as HELL, have AWESOME AWESOME vocals (that may take a few listens to grow on you) a bassist who keeps up on some unreal speed playing, WITHOUT a pick (absolute necessity. I hate picked bass!) and the whole package. If you listen to the guitars and say there's nothing new there, or that the guy isn't evil and frightening, then you just don't understand. :) Influences from Yngwie, 20th century composers like Shoenberg, and what sounds like Uli Jon Roth, mixed with technique the likes of which I doubt Paul Gilbert could pull off (let ALONE Yngwie!). Even with all this, they're still not a "guitar showcase"... it's music first. I can't understand not liking this band!

Altura, whether you like them or not, has supposedly gone alternative.

    Hasta!

Well, on my version of CiS, "Ghostship" is actually divided into seven

shorter songs, starting at track 13 and ending at track 20. Does it

exist versions of "Ghostship" where the song is not divided into smaller

parts, or is the divided version the only one available? Anyway, I think the

song(s) is great (Ghostship), and I am definetively pro longer songs!

And I also think that long songs are kind of trademark for Dream Theater,

so if they suddenly stop making long songs just to fit the market, I would

be dissapointed, but I would not STOP liking them... Dream Theater are

great whatever they do, no matter how they do it!

The first song was decent... well written.

The second one, I believe, is a fraud. Guitarists, go listen to Rupp's second song on Alan Estrada's page. The vibrato and some of the high notes don't sound right. Sounds to me like it's been sped up. Plus, the picking technique doesn't sound right to my ears, and some of the tapped things just sound pretty obvious.

This is MY opinion, and I have no way to prove it, but I'd LOVE to see what some other jammers think. The first song is quite decent, but it doesn't follow that he'd play the first song the way he did, and hold back all these licks for the second one. If I'm wrong, I'll publicly apologize, but it will take more than Rupp or Estrada telling me I'm wrong.

I've sped up my own songs for fun before, but never even CONSIDERED passing it off for the real shit. You'll notice how the tone quality on Rupp's second song sounds like Paul Gilberts on "I Understand Completely" off the Guitars that Rule the World cd... a song that features some sped up fake licks as a joke. Can some of you shredders go listen to these files and verify or tell me I'm wrong? I found this kind of insulting. The URL is in one of the last jams, in a post from Estrada.

I heard the "Euro-LTE" on Friday at the record store, and the gaps mentioned here were there. It made me decide not to be the album yet, and wait for a better mastered version to come along (unlikely? well, Deep Purple did it with their In Rock-25 CD), or import it from the US.

Anybody have an idea who we can email to complain about this? I think it is really stupid to f*ck up a masterpiece like this with easily-avoided errors in mastering (if that's what they are).

just to add on the anlgagard/anekdoten coversation:

anglgard has 3 albums out: hybris, elipog, and burned alive. the band broke up late in 1994 (actually, burned alive - from progfest '94 - is the last anglgard show ever). aneketon has 4 albums out - vemod, nucleus, live ep and the official live in japan album. my website has a complete discography if you want to check that out. according to jan-erik liljestrom, the band is very much alive and taking a break before working on their new album.

i happened to pick up a bill hicks cd yesterday (arizona bay) and for those of you who don't know who he is, he was one of the greatest comedians ever to live. his death in 1994 was truly a tragedy. i hope some of you pick up some of his material if possible.

It is funny that most people in this list seem to think think that these "new age of progressive music" bands such as Dream Theater, Shadow Gallery, Fates Warning and such are the first ones to do concept albums or long music, making them their trademark.

That's absolutely not correct. First of all, the majority of Dream Theater songs isn't long. Take, for instance, "Images and Words" or "Awake" or "When Dream and Day Unite". The longer songs are around 11 minutes (with "Scarred" being exactly 11:00 and "Learning to Leave" being 11:30). All other songs are under the 10 minute mark.

Now, if you take a look at what the progressive bands (not prog metal, only prog) were doing in the 70s (most of them, doing these things before I was even born), you'll be in shock, if you like long songs. Take a look at that:

    * Yes, "Tales from Topographic Oceans" has 4 20-minute songs; * Yes, "Relayer" has 3 songs, one being 20+-minute and the other songs around 9 minutes; * Yes, "Close to the Edge", with the title track being 18 minutes long; * Jethro Tull and his 40-minute concept albums; * Emerson, Lake and Palmer, "Brain Salad Surgery" has "Karn Evil 9", which is divided into 3 "impressions", with the 1st impression divided into 2 parts (due to technical limitations of the time). KE9 is 30 minutes long; * Emerson, Lake and Palmer, "Tarkus" has "Tarkus" with 20 minutes and some absolutely crazy, wild prog (recommended); * Camel, "The Snow Goose" is a 43-minute concept album that is basically one song.

I can't list more because I'm very ignorant on 70's bands.

Of course, those into progressive bands know all this, but many people who got into prog metal from the metal side of Dream Theater may ignore such masterpieces of progressive rock.

If you're asking if there's something magic about the 20 minutes :-), then you are on the right track. Since each side of a vinyl disc had 20 minutes approximately, this was the longer that songs could get without being split (this is also the reason why KE9's 1st impression is split into 2 parts).

So, these progressive metal bands are not being that innovative when they're doing these 15 or 20 minute songs. Many bands have done that in the past (20 years ago, for instance).

    []s, Roger...

P.S.: If you don't know the albums I listed, I highly recommend them, since they give some insight in where does Dream Theater got inspiration. An album that is worth checking also is Yes's "Fragile".

It's sort of a grunge/hard rock hybrid. Call it "dark rock." Kulick does solo alot, so I guess it can't really be grunge. On some songs, Corabi sounds like his Scream days (those are the catchy ones). And on others he sounds like he did with Motley. If you're a fan of Corabi, I would recommend picking it up. It is a good album, just not as amazing as I had hoped. > > Isn't Eric Singer on this as well as Bruce and John? Well, if you've never heard of a new prog metal band, a first place to start is a place called The progressive metal list. (http://www.onr.com/progress/) The list is very comprehensive, although a bit late on more recent disks. Also included on most bands is a short review about any albums the reviewer might have heard. A must link for any die-hard progmetal listener.

It is not completely complete, but I figure he must have close to 80-90% of most bands there in some shape or form.
