I don't understand the concept here. Certainly alot of people here have been
complaining about how DT has gone in a more "pop" direction. A move like putting
Met II on the next full-length album would certainly be a departure from this pop
area. If the band trims the song, obviously key sections to the songs completeness
will be dropped. This move of putting Met II on the next album would certainly
convince all the unbelievers and doubters that DT is indeed NOT going pop. Also,
you may have forgotten about a certain band who went in a pop direction for two
albums only to be disallusioned with "the industry". They retreated and decided to
screw what they thought "the fans wanted to hear" and wrote one big 55 minute prog
fest song for themselves. The disc will soon become their highest selling album, if
it hasn't done so already. BTW-the name of that band is Fates Warning :-)

Hey there...haven't been Jammin at all recently...too much shit to do.
Anyway, I have been buying CDs left and right. (LTE is on my list, I'm
just runnin out of money!!) Soooo I figure some of you may want to hear
about some of this stuff, because a lot of it's obscure, and I don't
recall ever having seen these bands mentioned on here.
Doctor Nerve--
This is some psycho avant garde jazz/rock stuff that is absolutely out
there by itself. The only comparison I can even think of is mid-70s
Miles Davis, sans the African feel, plus some a little bit of Robert
Fripp thrown in on guitar. Add to this some computer music and you're
getting the idea that this shit is beyond weird. Some of it manages to
be catchy...most of it doesn't. I really like it, but I can only take a
little bit of it at a time right now. It's earsplitting. Also, the
pieces tend to be very short, between 2 and 5 minutes. A lot of the song
titles betray an amusing Zappa influence--things like "Portland Applauds
the Radio," "I Am Not Dumb Now," "Don't Be A Hog," "Sister Cancer
Brother Dollar," etc. Instrumentation is pretty diverse; there's a
guitarist, a drummer, a bassist, and a horn or a sax or two of some sort
on pretty much every track, but there's a whole army of other folks who
come in on different tracks. Everybody says the one I got (Armed
Observation/Out To Bomb Fresh Kings) is the easiest to start with, btw.
Highly recommended to fans of the avant garde jazz scene--late Trane,
69-75 Miles, and some of the wackier shit by Crimson and 20th century
classical guys like Berg and Stockhausen (that's how dissonant it
is....). Only for the VERY adventurous.
Philharmonie--
This is a really cool band from France. I love these guys more with
every listen. The most obvious point of reference is 80s King Crimson
and Fripp's work with the Crafties, but Philharmonie takes that
intricate "Bach rock" format and expands it. The contrast of Belew's
indiscipline and Fripp's discipline is gone, and you don't have Bruford
and Levin reinventing their damn instruments back there, but what really
makes the band interesting is the rather delicate and often very complex
weavings of the guitar lines. No vocals, this is all instrumental; the
guitar lines make up for that by being *very* melodic. This band is also
very strong rhythmically, using short melodic and rhythmic patterns that
overlap and interlock. VERY highly recommended. Guitarists will
especially dig this stuff, as well as anyone who wants to know what a
Chapman Stick sounds like. Start with Nord or Rage--the latter is less
delicate but no less complex, but Nord seems more thought out and
deliberate. Also, there is Les Elephants Carillonneurs, which is just
three guitarists. This is a *very* delicate and smooth album, and is
also highly recommended to guitarists in particular.
Djam Karet--
This is a very odd mix of King Crimson circa Red and Pink Floyd....sort
of. Very unique stuff. The band plays in two very different idioms
(somewhat like the 80s Crimson split personality, actually). One is the
Floydian side of the band: mellow, atmospheric synth washes (which also
resemble some of Fripp's Frippertronics/Soundscapes work) and taped
sounds (voices, jackhammers, cars, etc.). This is the side that also
features gentle acoustic guitar interludes, etc. The other side is the
Crimsonian one: hard, driving guitar-based rock, with good solos. The
contrast is striking and really works well, IMHO. Sometimes I feel like
the chord progressions are a bit too obvious, but that's a minor
complaint. Definitely worth checking out, although some of it might be
too weird for some of you. I got The Devouring, their latest, which
reconciles the two personalities of the band pretty well; I understand
that some of their albums let one side dominate the other. Fans of the
hard stuff will want to go for Burning the Hard City too; fans of the
spacey stuff will prefer Suspension and Displacement. If you don't have
a preference either way, pretty much any album should be okay to start
with.
Anyway, you'll hafta go to some mail order places for this stuff, if
you're interested. (Target probably won't be stocking any of this
anytime soon....;) ) Other obscure bands I really dig but didn't feel
like reviewing =) : Boud Deun, Leger de Main, Discipline, Arti E
Mestieri (drummers: get something by this band!--the drummer is a
nutcase), and Ozone Quartet. Sorry for the long post, but I didn't have
anything better to do =)

Mine also came with Easy-CD Pro which, with a little help from
some Jammers (extreme thanks to Mike Marshall) I've been able to
get things working. The only thing that I've found to be a pain
is the inability to do CD to CD copy of audio cd's. But you can
simply copy the songs to your hard drive as .wav files then make
the cd. Some things are fairly easy to understand while others
are a little less intuitive.

I also noticed that problem with my SONY car CD changer. The reason is just stupid mastering. They put the usual 2sec pauses between the songs (that's when you see your player display -0:02 or something), and some CD players mute the sound during those pauses. So it's generally a bad idea to include pauses when you want to master a continuous piece of music. When I heard the first couple tracks of the album with all those cuts at the end of every song I thought: Wow, an album full of PMU endings...

About Genesis: To me, Duke is the last "great" Genesis album. Even though Steve Hackett is not on here it still has some really good stuff on it. But for me, the best stuff is from the Peter Gabriel years (except "From Genesis to Revelation). These are:
Trespass (get the import if possible because it's remastered. USA version isn't) Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Genesis Live, Selling England By The Pound, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway.
Then after Pete left my fave is "A Trick Of The Tail." or the live 2cd set "Seconds Out." After that, there's Duke then everything else sucked until the new album, Calling All Stations.

KISS THE STONE:
I would be careful about these people because according to the query that was posted on the jam all these people sond Asian. BEFORE YOU POLITICALLY CORRECT ASSHOLES JUMP ALL OVER ME, the guys who ran the old KTS were all Italians, so I'm assuming that these guys just took the name. I am saying this because I used to live by a store that sold boots for $25 a disc. then there was a co. called Live Storm that sold the same titles but instead of $25 per it was $14 per. You'd think "well, the quality would be the same." But it wasn't. It was like they recorded the boot cd onto a tape through a ghetto blaster on a .49 blank tape then made the cd's from that. Ultimately though it's your decision. If someone does order through them post it to the jam because if the quality is the same then that's a hell of a deal!

To me he sounds like Gary. I heard some guy mention that he is trying to be a Sammy clone and I completely disagree. This is the same guy who had never had an Extreme cd and me along with some other IRC people had to basically beg him to buy III Sides to Every Story. So since he's not into Extreme his opinion to me is invalid. But I can see where someone who isn't into Extreme can think he is trying to be Sammy because in certain songs Gary does do some screaming and when he does that he does sound like Sammy. Saying that Gary sings like Sam is like saying David Lee Roth sings like James LaBrie.

Then DT could decide what they want more: write good, interesting, challenging music or appeal to the lowest common denominator.
I think that DT has sacrificied their artistic integrity enough with FII and it shows: jammers rave about seeing FII in the top-10s of selling albums and hearing songs off of FII on the radio.
Please don't respond quoting Rush's Spirit of the Radio, there are tons of underground bands that are alive and well and also...their kids have enough food! Gee, I wonder how that can happen without them being first in Billboard's most selling or whatever it's called.

As I said earlier, I don't think that "Lords of Sound" is that good, because it lacks a lot of the higher end frequencies. The sound is muffled, and as I said earlier also, I think that this is a very annoying problem. *BUT* this boot has some interesting songs on it, such as "To Live Forever" with appended guitar solo (similar to that one from Mike Bahr's "When Dream and Today Unite") and "Learning to Live" (but keep in mind that LtL is edited, *very* unfortunately).

Get Nero Burning Rom from <www.ahead.de> and you'll be able to CD to CD digital copies of audio CDs.

That's an...erm, interesting, correlation KorgX3 made about the time to have a shit and the length of time a song plays for. I don't really buy it myself......I'm not going to even begin talking about 'toilet timing' or anything but I personally LOVE long songs, and short ones two, but not of the Green Day variety. Anyway, on to the other thing....I'll also be away for the Easter break (and I get FOUR whole weeks!!!) but I'm not unsubscribing. I do realise that when I get back it'll take me the whole of the summer term to read all 120 or so 'Jams but what the hell, eh? I might as well pass the time doing something! The best thing about my long Easter break is that I'll also be seeing DT on their short stop in the UK (Is four dates really enough? Hey folks...
When I posted that I had the full Jordan Rudess show I didn't expect the number of responses I received requesting it. I got close to 30 emails about it the day I posted the message. :) I've got my last exam today and then I'm off to Florida for Spring Break. I'm getting out about 8-10 trades for that show before I leave, but I can't get 30 trades out before Saturday. (Yikes!) So, if you're still interested in that show please email me again next weekend and I'll be happy to set up trades with all intersted parties... (Woohooo! Gotta love good trade fodder) :) I sent private email to a few of you explaining this, but then I gave up. :) Take care all... (LAST EXAM T-Minus 2hours 30minutes!!!)
PS. I'm thinking strongly of setting up a DT tape tree. I was considering taking a poll on my webpage of established DT boot traders (say, 25 hours or more) to see what their favorite DT show(s) is, and then setting up a public tree for the top three shows in the poll, or something like that. I'd run the analog side, and if there's enough demand someone else can run the digital (DAT or MD) side. If anyone has any suggestions, opinions, etc, let me know...

So I was going to sleep last night, and wanted to fall asleep to a CD, which is common for me - is it common for other people on here too, or what?
Anyway, a few weeks ago I bought a CD by the Kronos Quartet, which I had heard some good stuff about. I figure a string quartet would be a good, relaxing thing to fall asleep to, so I put it on for the first time....The first track was great, with the quartet doing some background stuff for this boys' choir - really good...
I'm getting ready to fall asleep, and around track 5, the quartet went absolutely fuckin' apeshit, doing really wacky and I mean off-the-wall shit. Weird is the only way to describe it.......anyone else know about these folx???? Needless to say, I had to turn it off to even consider sleeping....
One more question....I really like stuff like the boys' choir thing that was done. I'm looking for stuff like that, but I don't know how to describe it. Very chant-ish harmonies and stuff.....kinda like Loreena McKennitt's stuff from "The Mask and the Mirror" (track 1) ....also stuff like in the vein of Carmina Burana as well.....
....also neat acoustic guitar, including cool instrumental flamenco as well......
if anyone has suggestions, please let me know.....
